The President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, has promised that the country will do well in the competition especially with the quality preparation sponsored by the Rivers State Government.
Top wrestlers like Odunayo Adekuoroye and Blessing Oborodudu have also promised to go for gold in the continental event.
The chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the competition tagged “Port Harcourt
2108,” Boma Iyaye, says everything has been put in place for the opening ceremony of the event slated for Wednesday and commencement of competition.
Iyaye, who spoke at the Alfred Diete Spiff Sports Complex, the venue for the championship, stated that wrestlers, officials and heads of delegations would experience the best of hospitality in the Garden City.
The LOC chairman, who is also the Rivers Commissioner for Sports, commended the state Governor, Nyesom Wike, for providing every need for the championship, pointing out that the opening ceremony would be spectacular.
President of the United World Wrestling Africa, Fouad Meskout, who arrived in Port Harcourt last Sunday, has expressed satisfaction with the facilities, rating them as world-class.
So far, 11 countries Kenya, Namibia, Liberia, Burundi, South Africa, Tunisia, Egypt,
Morocco, Algeria and Sudan are already in Port Harcourt, while more countries are expected to arrive today.
Meanwhile, the President, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Mr Honour Sirawoo, has assured visiting journalists of a conducive working environment and the best of times in Port Harcourt.
“Let me use this opportunity to welcome my colleagues within and outside Nigeria, especially the leadership of AIPS in Africa led by our own Mitchell Obi. Port Harcourt and indeed, Rivers people are proud to have Africa in our state; it is a gloriousopportunity that will remain indelible in the minds of our people,” Sirawoo said.
