Leicester City manager, Claude Puel, says the stiff competition in his squad has left the pair of Islam Slimani and Kelechi Iheanacho battling for places from the Foxes’ bench this season, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Both forwards were not included in Leicester City’s matchday squad that recorded their fourth consecutive win in the English Premier League against Southampton at the Saint Marys Stadium on Wednesday.
A brace from Shinji Okazaki and goals from Riyad Mahrez and Andy King secured the 4-1 win for Leicester City; their seventh win of the campaign.
When asked why Iheanacho and Slimani were not included in the matchday squad for the game against Southampton, the Frenchman replied: “It was just competition and numbers. All the players deserve game time and to come off the bench. It’s just competition. But it’s important to continue our game.”
Iheanacho has made two starts and seven substitute appearances while Slimani has made one start and eight substitute appearances for Leicester City this season.
“I was sure they can give their best. We have a good squad with a fantastic spirit. We needed some changes, because if we want to keep fresh then it is important to make some changes,” Puel said in his post match interview.
“I just do my job with the staff, to give the players opportunities to play with different styles. It’s a good result for the moment, but this is the Premier League and it’s very difficult.”
Leicester City will be hoping to make it five Premier League wins on the spin when they host Crystal Palace at King Power Stadium on Saturday.
