Puel: Why Iheanacho, Slimani. Were Dropped Vs Southampton

Leicester City manager, Claude Puel, says the stiff competition in his squad has left the pair of Islam Slimani and Kelechi Iheanacho battling for places from  the Foxes’ bench this season, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Both forwards were not included in Leicester City’s matchday squad that recorded their fourth consecutive win in the English Premier League against Southampton at the Saint Marys Stadium on Wednesday.

A brace from Shinji Okazaki and  goals from Riyad Mahrez and Andy King secured the 4-1 win for Leicester City; their seventh win of the campaign.

When asked why Iheanacho and Slimani were not included in the matchday squad for the game against Southampton, the Frenchman replied: “It was just competition and numbers. All the players deserve game time and to come off the bench. It’s just competition. But it’s important to continue our game.”

Iheanacho has made two starts and seven substitute appearances while Slimani has made one start and eight substitute appearances for Leicester City this season.

“I was sure they can give their best. We have a good squad with a fantastic spirit. We needed some changes, because if we want to keep fresh then it is important to make some changes,” Puel said in his post match interview.

“I just do my job with the staff, to give the players opportunities to play with different styles. It’s a good result for the moment, but this is the Premier League and it’s very difficult.”

Leicester City will be hoping to make it five Premier League wins on the spin when they host Crystal Palace at King Power Stadium on Saturday.

  • Let truth be told, Iheanacho has not impressed me since he moved to Leicester. Even when he plays for the Eagles, I am still not satisfied. What is his problems? He is living on past glory. As far as I am concerned, he is not relevant to Nigeria’s WC course. Better players are there that will be of better use to the Eagles at present. As for Ahmed Musa age is catching up to him. The Nigerian mentality will not allow him to retire from the Eagles. He knows that he is occupying the Northern Nigeria slot. Until some other player from the North come around he will be there for a long time.

Why can’t this coach be fair to all by rotating his squad? How can you tell me they deserve playing time, yet week in week out, they won’t be given a look in? It’s totally unfair.

Puel is being economic with the truth. I watched Andy Townshend do a pre match analysis recently and he practically demanded that English players be given playing time in their respective clubs because 2018 Fifa World Cup. So, as long as Demary Gray is fit, Iheanacho will not be included in the first xi
