Real Madrid Close In On Ajax Record

A lot has been said of Real Madrid’s record-breaking run of results which currently stands at 21 straight competitive wins. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the record for straight wins is currently held by Brazilian side Curitiba, who notched up 24 in 2011.

However, that is not the record to beat. Johan Cruyff’s 1971-72 Ajax team, which also included Neeskens and Johnny Rep in its ranks, racked up 26 consecutive wins between the league, the cup and the European Cup.

That is the record that Ancelotti’s lads should be aiming for. It was set during the modern era and is comparable in terms of standard and number of competitions to the current game. Ajax strung together 19 straight wins in the Dutch Eredivisie, three in the cup and four in the European Cup, which they went on to win.

German side Dresden also put together a 26-game winning streak during the 1942/43 campaign. That included 23 league games – Dresden won every game they played – and three cup games.
