Real Madrid missed the chance to close the gap on LaLiga leaders Barcelona after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
Barcelona were held to a 2-2 draw by Ceta Vigo at the Nou Camp earlier in the day and a win for Zinedine Zidane’s men would have seen them reduce the gap between them and their title rivals to six points but instead they laboured to a barren draw in the dour encounter.
The European champions despite the disappointing result moved from fifth to fourth position in the table.
Both teams struggled to create any opening in what was a tightly contested affair at San Mames.
Madrid came close to scoring the game’s opening goal right at the end of the first half as Rapheal Varane wasted a headed chance.
Sergio Ramos also had his header blocked by Xabier Etxeita in front of goal moments after that.
Current best player in the worrl, Cristiano Ronaldo struggled to make an impact in the game and had a couple of tame efforts saved by the home team goalkeeper.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men two minutes from time after Ramos was sent off for a foul on Aritz Aduriz.
