Former Spain captain Fernando Hierro has been given the emergency role of coaching the team at the Russia 2018 World Cup.
Hierro replaces Julien Lopetegui who was sacked on Wednesday, the day after he (Lopetegui) was announced as Real Madrid coach for next season.
“Fernando Hierro will assume the position of selecting the national team at the World Cup in Russia and will appear before the media accompanied by the president of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales,” the Spanish FA announced on their official website on Wednesday.
“Next, he will direct his first training and on Friday he will debut in Sochi in the Spain against Portugal match.”
Real Madrid legend Hierro, 50, was Spain captain and a veteran of four World Cups. He last coached lower division Real Oviedo.
