REDEMPTION TIME: 5 Super Eagles Stars Who Need To Shine Vs Serbia

REDEMPTION TIME: 5 Super Eagles Stars Who Need To Shine Vs Serbia

Ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Serbia, Completesportsnigeria.com’s ADEBOYE AMOSU lists five Super Eagles players who need a big performance to redeem themselves and cement their spots in the squad for Russia 2018 after below-par showings against Poland…

LEON BALOGUN
Hailed for his formidable partnership with William Troost-Ekong during the qualifiers, the Mainz of Germany centre-back has struggled to impress in the  Super Eagles’ last two games.
No wonder he was hauled off in the 4-2 friendly win against Argentina last November and the situation repeated itself on Friday with Kenneth Omeruo replacing him after another below-par outing.
With the likes of Chidozie Awaziem, Stephen Eze and Omeruo knocking on the door and hoping to secure starting berths ahead of the World Cup, Tuesday’s game against Serbia offers the towering defender a big chance to redeem himself and secure his place in the team.

BRYAN IDOWU
The Amkar Perm of Russia left-back had a memorable debut, scoring Nigeria’s third goal in the 4-2 win against Argentina last November. He was praised for his all-round display in the game and touted as possible replacement for regular left-back Elderson Echiejile.
Idowu however failed to live up to the high ratings against Poland and was way off the high standards he set in his previous outing and also at club level.

super eagles-
It is difficult to see him start  against Serbia with Ola Aina and Echiejile also fighting for the same position.
Should he get the nod ahead of the duo again, Idowu will need to better his performance against Poland to prove he is the right man for the position.

JOEL OBI
Plagued by injuries in recent years, the Torino of Italy midfielder was handed the chance to stake a claim for a place in the team ahead of the mundial against the Poles.
Though he didn’t do his chances any harm following a battling display in the middle of the park, with the likes of Mikel Obi, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo and Mikel Agu ahead of him in the pecking order, Joel could make do with another chance and a top-notch display to prove he is worthy of a place in the World Cup squad.

TYRONNE EBUEHI
Still considered as second choice to Shehu Abdullahi, the ADO Den Haag right-back showed his class when he was  introduced after break in the friendly win against Argentina in what was his debut game for the Super Eagles.
He was decent too after replacing the same player against Poland, but he will need to offer more to displace Shehu from the spot.
He might get the chance to finally prove his worth against Serbia on Tuesday with Shehu Abdullahi looking doubtful for the game after picking up an injury against Poland.

KELECHI IHEANACHO
An inconsistent performer on the international scene, Kelechi Iheanacho despite his quality and versatility has not consistently proved he is worthy of a regular berth in the team.
He was poor against Poland on Friday and might need to take his chance against Serbia if at all he gets to feature in the game to show he is still a force to reckon with in the team.

  • My friend Leave Leon Balogun alone he is our best defender Period. Kelechi Iheanacho on the other hand is seriously inconsistent and looks like he is depreciating with time Very Sad.

    • More players should be tried that is the positive side of friendly matches

    • go on youtube and watch the whole argentina vs nigeria 4-2 match. you will clearly see that balogun played awfully. dont let the the onyinbo skin fool you. that guy is average at best

  • mutum 8 months ago

The truth must be told, v been saying it on many platform as this, baloguns recover as a defender is very slow. on aerial duels he is good, we seriously need another back up ASAP! omeruo has lost his shape as a super eagle. Brian idowu, ola aina are not super eagles standard yet. esp aina,I heard he is skifull, watched him on so many occasions nothing oooooooo. player wen d jitter not to make errors.wish my darling eagles the best tomorrow.

Mr CSN reporter, Leon Balogun was not substituted in both matches because of his standard of play as implied in your reprt but was hauled off because he had received knocks in both matches.

  • Hmmm… Kenneth Omeruo and Eze knocking on d door to displace Balogun? This Egberebi sa.upon his injury against Poland, rohr still had to wait till lewandowski was substituted before risking Omeruo in his place. U think rohr is daft? He needs to improve truly but even Ekong still banks on his presence to perform sometimes.

  • what does complete sports has against baogun

  • This report is a joke… so Kelechi Ihenacho who i believe has more international goals than Odion Ighalo needs to shine please explain.

  • Mumitee 8 months ago

I wonder y balogun is on ur list, I doubt if u watched dat match bcos if u did u wount have his name on ur list. He was one of the top performers against Poland, he held his own well against laewandowski. Pls report well next time

  • Even as bad as Iheanacho was, if MOSES let him take those free kicks, maybe he could have scored one or two goals.

  • Arnold 8 months ago

@abdulrazak is that what coach Rohr told you after the match? So you see that everyone has the right to their opinion. So don’t make CSN reporter look like a fool in his report. How sure are you that’s not the reason he was substituted? Nigerians SMH

    • luomo 8 months ago

at least u read after the match that Balogun and Shehu’s injury will be assessed..isn’t that enough clue

  • Double A 8 months ago

Methink Balogun realy needs to up his game,I can not realy say of the ARGENTINA match, but against Poland,he was off his pace,Ekong was the one doing all the dirty jobs, why did Rohr handed Ekong the Skipo band?Kelechi is not much active at Club level, what do you expect of him in the National team? Overall I think those who need to up their games are more than five

  • Leon Balogun shouldn’t be in that list at all.
Don’t even think of Omeruo replacing Balogun.

  • Odo polycarp 8 months ago

My own observation is that victor moses is not the right person to be taking those set pieces like, corners, freekicks etc. Iheanacho would have done better. Moses publicly shuned iheanacho when he wanted to take the freekicks. He atimes play for himself, selfishly trying to catch d headlines to d detriment of d team. Rohr must talk to him if they are to acheive anything @ d mundial

  • Bekee 8 months ago

With exception of Balogun, your accessment is spot on. Balogun has nothing to prove. Though like everybody else has his fault.

  • ojo samuel 8 months ago

this amosu sha..well he is doing his bit…balogun did well in aerial duels and even cleared a ball off the line…he only has to work on his pace and yet omeruo nd awaziem has no guts displacing him…other players has to be tested so he was sub

    joel obi also did well

i only agree with him on idowu and iheanacho…i think iheanacho has lost his no 10 abilities…he is better than ighalo as a lone striker and since iwobi has been below par on the wings…he should try him in the no 10 position

  • ojo samuel 8 months ago

and make moses una calm down…make he no say na team work go do am and make he leave free kicks to my guy, nacho or at least we can follow chelsea pattern where 2 or more players can take fk.it makes them more unpredictable…make nacho, ebuehi and moses take do am o…no be only mose go go to the promised land

  • I agree with the author, Balogun wasn’t in his usual self in the match against Argentina. But against Poland, it was a different ball game. He asserted himself and really represented all of us, born on 28th June. I’m so proud of him.

Eagles struggled against poland because Iheanacho who was supposed to be the third man in the midfield was found wanting. He negated his responsibilities and rather was playing too close behind Ighalo.
That left a big gap between the two central midfielders and the attackers.
However, that led to pressure on the whole team we were like a team playing with 10 men and against a high pressing team like Poland we were left disjointed and just had to manage the situation successful which apparently was an eye sore performance.Iheanacho apparently was the reason we struggled. The coaches knew this and had to invite the likes of Etebo and Agu to salvage the team.Meanwhile against Serbia either of this two would feature in a three man midfield and when Eagles play in this format they play with gusto. An eye catching free flowing football which is the symbol of a Nigerian side.

Balogun and ekong saved super eagles from those hungry Polish strikers particularly thier captain and no 9. He was the highest goal scorer in Europe during the qualifier. Balogun is good.

  • I totally disagree with the writer on certain players mentioned Balogun and Obi. I think it is wrong to add them to that list. The fact that they were substituted doesn’t mean they didn’t play well but u know it is a friendly match and u will want to give others a chance. you can see the number of substitute that were made by Poland.

  • Compare our defensive line of those days with now, you will still appreciate Balogun. Our attacking line and mid field were poor, hence a lot of pressure on the defence. And in recent times, he is battling with some injuries. And being a friendly he may not want to secure more injuries. I am surprised u didnt mention Ighalo. He was complete flopp.

pls for once cn we n tribalize this topic? The writer made his personal observation it is for u to either comment or not.

Nigeria will win Serbia 2-1 score draw

  • kelvin okuma 8 months ago

to me truth being told i hv always being balogun critic.cant u guys see,he is vry slow in movement, n pacy strikers like messi will definitely expose him.

  • balogun performance was above average, Ighalo, iheanacho and Bryan Idowu were totally missing in action during the match, our defense was credible but our mild field and attack needs to be worked on.

  • kelvin okuma 8 months ago

at obasi.2-1 is not a score draw.

  • I said it b4 iheanacho is not a 10,he performs beta as a support attacker.as for balogun he does not have anything to prove, players do have their off days.

  • kelvin okuma 8 months ago

most of us did not really understand the nitty gritty of that friendly against poland.there are things we should put into consideration.no1.it is friendly game where numerous tactics need to be examined.the tactics gernot rohr played in the first half of the argentine game is different from the one he latter introduced in the second half that eventually changed the course of the game.now, new tactics was introduced in the game against poland that made some players play in their unusual position a typical example was idowu who played as a striker in the game against argentina but played as a left full back against the polish.pls lets criticise constructively and knw it jst friendlies where many tacticts are examined.atleast we should go to the world cup wit three tactics.

Balogun is not a super man and injuries kept frustrating him some times but mean while he his one of our best defender now, ekong and balogun together are so good which make them rock solid but this is soccer the opponent have to play too, they both mark with blood in their eyes and they dont take nonsense, they should just be working like that together and they will be perfect, simon Moses have to play too ahead of musa, any body can take free kicks as long as they can score,i rate Joel obi and ndidi 8/10 becsuse they both did very well.Nacho should improve his game and he should work on his foot walk,i will give the keeper 10/10,ighalo all he needs is good finishing passes.Ogu,onazi and the rest will also play but all cant be on the pitch,Some times our reporters post a lot of rubbish articles and I even felt am good than most of them posting nonsense for people to read

  • Empire 8 months ago

CJ God bless you…..Rohr need to caution Moses on taking free kicks, i have never seen Moses near free kicks in Chelsea, why making himself so important when it comes to Eagles? i dont know why he likes wasting all our free kicks, he can take corner and spot kicks and not free kicks. Moses is a good player but if he had played against Argentina, Nigeria would have lost that game….Moses is too possessive and selfish, the coach must do something about that…if Kelechi had taken one of the free kicks, it could have been a different ball game…

  • kelvin okuma 8 months ago

ekoong is a cover up to balogun as we have in the 94 team where uche okafor covers okechukwu.

  • Empire 8 months ago

@Odo polycarp and Charles you guys are spot on….Both of you reall really watched the game….

  • Stanley 8 months ago

    Hmmm….Naija with criticism. Iheanacho is not a’10’.Idowu is jittery, Ola Aina is better.In short our Squad should be:EZENWA (1) Tyronne(2) Aina(3) Ndidi(4) Eking(5)Balogun(6) Moses Simon(7) Iheanacho..or Ideye(8) Ighalo..or Onyekuru ,Ajayi(9)
