Nigeria U-23s head coach Samson Siasia may have decided to drop former Golden Eaglets top scorer Victor Osimhen from the Rio Olympics squad.
Completesportsnigeria.com can report that Siasia has finally settled for Roma striker Sadiq Umar as back-up for Osimhen who is currently at the Abuja camp of the Flying Eagles ahead of this month's Africa U-20 Cup of Nations qualifiers against Burundi.
A Siasia aide revealed that the coach may be forced to drop Osimhen after the youngster insisted on playing for the Flying Eagles.
“Coach Samson Siasia has given up on Osimhen for now and has opted to call Roma striker Sadiq Umar," the source told Completesportsnigeria.com.
“He did everything to have the young man in his team but things did not work out as planned
“Siasia is already looking ahead and has resigned to fate over Osimhen's issue and opted to call Sadiq Umar who has been doing well at Roma.”
Osimhen, who set an all-time FIFA U-17 World Cup scoring record with 10 goals last year in Chile, was in Siasia's squad to the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, from where they qualified for the Olympics.
Since the Olympics are in August, Osimhen could still be available for the tournament even with his Flying Eagles commitments. There could also be room for both himself and Umar in the Olympics squad.
Umar has been in top form this season for Roma, scoring five goals for the senior side before coach Luciano Spalletti’s arrival at the Stadio Olimpico.
He later dropped from the pecking order of top strikers and was moved to Roma team B by Spalletti where he has scored 19 goals from 18 matches so far.
