Rio Ferdinand: France Tactics Made A Difference

Former England international Rio Ferdinand has given credit to the tactical reshuffle made by France coach Didier Deschamps for their victory over Nigeria on Monday.

Les Bleus defeated the Super Eagles 2-0 in a closely fought Brazil 2014 World Cup Round of 16 clash in Brasilia.

“France got stronger after the obvious change of putting Karim Benzema through the middle,” Ferdinand, who played for England at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, wrote in the BBC.

“The balance of the team was much better and he looked a different player. But I thought Mathieu Valbuena was the best player on the pitch.

“I think Nigeria will be disappointed. They didn’t get as many bodies forward as they could have done.

“What is fantastic for France is that they now have different options with personnel. They will be a threat. You can’t read who they are going to play with and that will be tough for opposing teams.

“I love Benzema as a centre-forward, his movement. The one-two he played with Antoine Griezmann would have been goal of the tournament if he had scored.

“I was delighted Paul Pogba scored, but the Nigeria goalkeeper was at fault.”
