Former Nigeria U-23 international Popoola Sodiq has confirmed that he will be on his way to Egyptian club Al Masry in the summer, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Diminutive Sodiq who was a fan favourite at the 2016 Olympics in Rio confirmed to Completesportsnigeria.com on Wednesday that he has agreed in principle to join the Egyptian top flight side.

"This summer I will become a player of Al Masry. They were very keen to sign me and I liked the team's ambitions. I'll be in Egypt soon but the issue of contract duration will have to be sorted. But yes, I will be their player," the Metz of France midfielder who was on a six-month loan at Moroccan club Ittihad Khemisset told Completesportsnigeria.com.

Al Masry finished fourth in the 2016/2017 season with 54 points from 30 matches.

Meanwhile the player who is a free agent added that he uses short stature to good effect.

Sodiq explains: "My being short is an advantage to me because I'm very technical and it's not easy to shove me off the ball. When I started my career people thought my size would be a hindrance but we have very technical players like Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi whom you will find difficult to dispossess of the ball.

"My family have been amazing. They never doubted my abilities, they were always encouraging. My girlfriend too has been great. I wouldn't want to give out her name but she used to tell me that I can be the best player in the world.

"That (girlfriend's encouraging words) kept me going. I also owe a lot to my then U-23 coach Samson Siasia for the opportunity he gave me to represent Nigeria at the Olympics. Being a bronze medallist at the Games was massive.

"The crowd in Brazil always sang my name at the Olympics because they had watched  me in a friendly we played before the Rio Games. I was the Man of the Match. That was why they loved seeing me play for the Nigeria team."
