Rivers United captain Festus Austin and Nasarawa United skipper, Emmanuel Makama have expressed their strong belief in the quality of the home-based Super Eagles that will campaign in the 2017 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Cup, and tip the coach Salisu Yusuf team to win the tournament, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
The Nigerian team will play against Sierra Leone on Monday evening in their First Round tie with a possible victory ensuring qualification to the group stages.
“The players selected are in top form and deserved to be there. Definitely, you’ll not have everybody agreeing with the coach, ” Austin, skipper of Rivers United told Completesportsnigeria.com on Sunday.
“Of course, I would have loved to be part of the team, but in all fairness, the players in the team are the best for now. Let’s support them. It will serve as a good preparation for the Africa Nations Championship in January. They can win this competition. ”
On his part, Nasarawa United captain Makama reiterated the need for the players heading to Ghana 2017 to grab the opportunity given them as they look to get into the star studded Eagles ‘A’ team that consists mainly of the foreign-based players.
“The WAFU Cup is a big platform for the players to show their skills and convince the national team coaches that they can break into the team for major tournaments which at the moment is dominated by the foreign based players,” Makama said.
“I have played with and against them, so it’s not a bad team. Let them just go and do us proud. And let’s my prayer for them.”
