ROAD TO RUSSIA: 6 Super Eagles Stars With Longest 2017 Goal Droughts

With six days left in 2017 and six months to the 2018 World Cup, Completesportsnigeria.com Johnny Edward presents six Super Eagles players who have the longest goal drought.

Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City, England)

Despite being prolific for the Super Eagles in 2017 where he scored four goals in seven games, Kelechi Iheanacho will end 2017 without scoring an English Premier League goal if he fails to score against Watford and Liverpool in the Foxes’ remaining two league fixtures for 2017.

The Nigeria international has made 16 EPL appearances in 2017 (seven for Manchester City and nine appearances for Leicester City so far and has failed to score, though Iheanacho was on target for the Foxes in their Carabao Cup fourth round win against Leeds United.

His last goal in the English Premier League was on the 26th of December 2016 for Manchester City against Hull City at the KCOM Stadium. The 21-year-old forward came on for Nolito in the 57th minute of the encounter to score his fourth goal of that season.

Kayode Olanrewaju (Girona, Spain)

Kayode Olanrewaju has failed to replicate last season’s form with Austria Wein that saw Manchester City shell out €4m for him last summer.

Olanrewaju finished the 2016-17 season in the Austrian Bundesliga with 17 goals in 33 appearances but has failed to get off the mark with Girona where he is currently on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City. He has gone 13 games without a goal in the Spanish La Liga Santander.

This drought is Kayode’s longest ever since he fired blanks in 10 straight games for Maccabi Netanya during the 2012-13 season

Alex Iwobi, (Arsenal, England)

Alex Iwobi has featured in 11 of Arsenal’s 19 English Premier League games this season. He has scored once. The 21 year old’s drought in the English Premier League has extended to eight games while in all competitions this season, Iwobi has gone 15 games without finding the back of the net.

Imoh Ezekiel (Konyaspor, Turkey)

One-cap Nigerian international Imoh Ezekiel joined Konyaspor with the hope of rediscoving his goal-scoring touch but the 23-year-old ended his short stint with the Turkish Super Lig outfit unceremoniously.

The petite forward failed to score in 13 appearances for Konyaspor before terminating his contract at the club this week. The drought is Ezekiel’s longest ever since he came into limelight with Standard Liege in 2013-14 season.

Aaron Samuel (CSKA Moscow, Russia)

Since recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Aaron Samuel has failed to add goals to his games. The Nigerian international who has scored twice in seven games for the Super Eagles has gone nine games without a goal in all competitions for his Russian side.

His only goal this term was against Tosno where he featured for the entire duration of the encounter in August.

Victor Moses (Chelsea, England)

Having been deployed as a wing-back last season, Victor Moses goal returns have diminished. Moses has not scored this season in 13 English Premier League games and 15 in all competitions. Moses’ last goal in the EPL was against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on the 24th of November, 2016.
