ROAD TO RUSSIA: Is England Friendly Ideal For Super Eagles?

The Nigeria Football Federation and England’s Football Association on Wednesday confirmed that there will be a friendly between the Super Eagles and the Three Lions in London on 2 June.

Both teams will be looking to use the Wembley match as preparation towards the Russia 2018 World Cup which starts few days after the game.

While everybody agrees that this is a high-profile friendly for the Super Eagles given the calibre of opponent and the venue, eye brows have been raised in some quarters regarding the usefulness of the match.

Those against the friendly argue that the Super Eagles need to play countries with styles similar to Russia 2018 group phase opponents Argentina, Croatia and Iceland to give the Nigerian side a sense of what they will come up against at the World Cup.

England do not play like any of these teams, but those in support of the friendly believe the Super Eagles will benefit from playing against a grade A side with top players who will give the Nigerians a tough physical battle just days before the World Cup.

Which side are you on? Is the England friendly ideal for the Super Eagles or not? Why do you hold this view?

  • THIS VS ENGLAND MATCH IS SUPER IDEAL FOR THE SUPER EAGLES!!! THOSE AGAINST IT, USUALLY AS AN HABIT, DO NOT SEE ANYTHING GOOD IN ANYTHING. THEY WILL ALWAYS GO AGAINST ANY SUGGESTIONS. HOW CAN ANY COUNTRY ON EARTH NOT WANT TO ENGLAND BECAUSE THEIR STYLE OF PLAY IS NOT LIKE THEIR OPPONENTS? IT IS PREPOSTEROUS. IT IS LIKE TELLING US THAT WE CANNOT PLAY BRAZIL OR GERMANY BECAUSE OUR OPPONENTS DO NOT PLAY LIKE THEM. IT IS LAUGHABLE. SIMPLY PUT, THE BENEFIT IS LIKE: YOU WANT TO FIGHT A LIGHT WEIGHT BOXER BUT YOU ARE PRACTICING WITH AN HEAVY WEIGHT BOXER AS YOUR SPARING MATE. THE BENEFIT FROM THAT MATCH ARE NUMEROUS. THE CONFIDENCE THAT MATCH WILL PUT INTO THE BOYS ARE INESTIMABLE. ESPECIALLY IF WE BEAT ENGLAND. IF WE DRAW WE CAN TELL OURSELVES THAT WE CAN BEAT OR DRAW ARGENTINA. IF WE LOSS PLAYING WELL WE WILL RIGHT OUR MISTAKES AND FACE ANY TEAM. THE VENUE AT WEMBLEY WILL BE LIKE AN AWAY MATCH. RUSSIA WILL BE AN AWAY VENUE FOR 31 TEAMS. SO YOU SEE? PLAYING AT WEMBLEY IS AACHIEVEMENT. SOME ENGLISH PLAYERS DID NOT PLAY AT WEMBLEY BEFORE RETIRING. OUR PLAYERS CAN BE PROUD OF THAT. WE NEED MATCHES LIKE THESE. BRAZIL, GERMANY, BELGIUM. INFACT THE TOP 20 IN FIFA RANKING THE BETTER.

The purpose of a pre-tournament friendly is not to play against an exact copy of the prospective opponent. England is not Croatia and Nigeria is not Tunisia. The Wembley friendly is a fortnight to the real thing, and will afford both sides the opportunity to get much needed strategic fine-tuning, as well as a final test for the players going into the World Cup. For years most Nigerian football fans have been talking about how great it would be to play England, the country that brought soccer to NIgeria. This game has great cultural significance to both sides. It will be a scale on which to measure the progress of Nigerian football. And as we see, it will be financially rewarding for the English FA, hence they chose Wembley and nowhere else for the event.

  • We have test our strength with England already,to me I would have prefer country like Germany,Brazil,Portugal.

  • very well

Playing England at Wembley puts Nigeria’s team at disadvantage in the first place.
Most of our buys play in England and therefore knows their stile of play. Playing the Germans would be more meaningful.

  • please can I know how to get a ticket for the match between the Super Eagles and the Three Lion?

It is of a great advantage for our boys, first is the confidence it will give them to match up any team that comes to them. Secondly England plays a fast one like croatia, so it will be a very good match for them and it will moral boast for them

Myself in particular can’t wait to see this friendly match b/w the SE of Nigeria and the three lions of England! Then for those who are clamouring for a friendly match with countries that play like our opponents, PLS It doesn’t work like that b/c what looks like a ”yam” is not the real ”yam”!!! Let Oga Rorh try as much as possible to get the video tapes of our opponents especially that of Croatia and Iceland so that he can study them and try to map out a strategy which he will use to stop the ‘almighty’ Messi in case he refuses to get injured then lolssss!

There is nothing wrong in us playing the ‘the three lions’ d main thing is get this boyz quality opposition cos d thruth is most of our boyz are bench warmers so with this type pf games they will understand what is expected from them & d coaches can know who n who are up to the task.

  • I don’t think this game is ideal for the eagle because we already know the three lions strength let go for Brazil Peru or Portugal

  • The 3 lions are a good side, with hype and world stars around them, Nigeria will benefit in terms of:
    1- psychological preparedness
    2- coordination structure of Team
3- World cup mentality b4 games
    4- coaching tactics tweaking
    5- more revenue generation
    6- molding our brand
    7- encouraging international cooperation.

In a tourmament like w/c, any team can suprise you. So, there is need to play a lot of friendlies, even with less considered teams before the 3-lions’ match. And i see no need of seeking advice from the audience.

Alot of friendlies are needed wt regards preparations for a global competition like d world cup.
Just in d same way a student preparing for an eternal exams will master solving d past questions after exhausting his sylabbles, d coaching crew, should also master the style of play of their openents, they should have time to watch their opponents freindly games such that they can device a strategy to conquer them.
No team is unbeatable, build a “u can make it ” mentality in ur players, train them mentally never to accept defeat.
I think playing teams like Germany, Brazil, Portugal or Urugua is still gud, moreso playing England this time is not a bad idea.

  • Its a nice ideal, dnt mind d pple dat oppose on d ideal, saturday is already at d corner.

  • U can never please most ppl. How any nigerian will not be happy that we are playing a heavyweight in world football is beyond me. We have 2 european teams in our group and we are playing a friendly match with england that d last time i checked is still an european country. And u say they have different styles, since u know better u would’ve proceeded to tell us d styles of croatia and iceland and then compare and differentiate them with that of england to buttress ur point. I dont knw much but I knw that in mordern football u dnt focus on a particular style of any team if u want to beat them, i knw that most teams now change their style according to d opponents they face. And I laugh at those that say we should be playing some other country instead of england bcos we already have some of our boys playing in d epl, meaning that we know them, it simply shows they know little about d dynamics of soccer. The way I see it, Even if we secure a brazil friendly, these same set of fastidious nigerians will still find reason to complain. Its a shame tho
