ROAD TO RUSSIA: How Far Can Super Eagles Go At 2018 World Cup?

The farthest the Super Eagles have gone since they started qualifying for the World Cup in 1994 has been the round of 16, which they have reached thrice in five outings.

The Nigerian side reached the second round in their debut campaign in 1994 as well as in 1998 and 2014, failing to advance beyond the group stage in 2002 and 2010.

Now, having been placed in Group D of the Russia 2018 World Cup with familiar foes Argentina and debutantes Iceland and star-studded Croatia, what do you feel are the chances of the Super Eagles?

Are the African giants good enough to match their previous achievement? Or can they equal Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana’s World Cup quarter-finals African record? Can Gernot Rohr’s side go even further than the last-eight stage to set a new African record?

Given the strengths and weaknesses of the current Super Eagles squad and their likely route to the latter stages, how far do you predict they can go in Russia?

It is time again to have your say as Completesportsnigeria.com continue our Road To Russia World Cup Debate series.

Our going far in the tournament will depend if we r able to top the group, that’s when we can play a lesser opponent and progress further,if we come second, it will be biz as usual.

The Eagles can surpass their previous record and African record with adequate preparation before the global event and if more players performing promisingly at their respective clubs are given opportunities to fight for first team positions eg Samuel Adegbenro(Rosenborg)scored three goals in two matches against Ajax to qualify Rosenborg to the group face of Europa league,Sylvester Igboun(fc UFA)scored two goals and an assist in this weekend match Amkar perm in Russian premier league,Paul Anaachua(fc Mittyjlland) etc

We have no business going to Russia if we are not aiming to win the World Cup. Is it to make up the numbers? The players and officials should have this objective imprinted in their minds. Remember the last AFCON we won? Tickets had been bought for return trip after the group stage!!

Very interesting question! As far as I am concerned, this is the best and the right time for the Eagles to win the world cup. Some people might saying I’m kidding or just because we have beaten Argentina, that’s why I am running my mouth some how but it is not so. However, what must be done now is very simple. We must build on our confidence than ever. No mercy for our opponents and we must have a not given up attitude and never say die spirit. Eagles is incomplete yet because we don’t have a “GRADE A STRIKERS” in the current team. Coach Rohr should please listen to us a bit. He needed to strengthen the up front and these are the right strikers for the Super Eagles,

    Obafemi Martins,

    Ike Uche

    Paul Onuachi

    Cyriel Desseers

    Dennis Emmanuel Bonaventure and

    Osemeh.

Check their videos on YouTube or on Instagram.

Coach Rohr should give them a chance before the world cup and picking the right one for the Mundial.

In the middle, we need the service of Nwakali, the Amunike’s under17 captain. That guy is a play maker. That is what the Eagles is lacking in the team. We also have Joel Obi.

Lastly, “goalkeeping department” Rohr and Nigerians should believe in young goalkeepers. Alanpasun and Francis Huzoho should be given a chance to be our next no1 for the world cup.

By having these sets of players in camp with good preparation and motivation with luck on ours side and prayer, we will win it in sha Allah. It’s time to show the world that there is a team in Africa called “Super Eagles of Nigeria” who are capable of lifting the world cup trophy in Russia 2018. So shall it be by God’s grace. Amen. God bless Nigeria!!!

I believe that the current super Eagles can go as far as wining the World Cup it is possible. What we need is good preparation, grade A friendly matches and the coach should also give new players that are currently doing well in their various clubs a chance to prove them selves players like that ONUACHU, DESSERIE,JOEL OBI and others. With prayers and luck on our side we can win the World Cup.

My opinion might be slightly different from others. The Super Eagles is good to go at the World Cup. The strength of the present team is in the coach. G. Rohr is a genius, cool-headed coach. With God on our side at the World Cup, Nigeria will soar!!

For me with the players Nigeria is having now we can match any team but we have to practice how to attack very well, canter attack and defend perfectly when all these are needed. I strongly believe if we prepare very well any big we are going to meet would find it difficult to win us. We have to grow confidence and respect any team no matter how strong is the team. Don’t underrate your team and no team should be underrated. Nonetheless we have to pray to God for luck because with God everything is possible. Inshah Allah (Almighty God) we would laugh last.

So happy that most fans are changing their expectations from the SE. When a village chief sends his hunters to the bush, he expects a healthy catch – antelope, bush pig – and not a mere rat. It’s time we expect more from the SE. Most Nigerians, including me, want to touch that cup.

  • I WISH RORH COULD HERE OUR OPINION IN THIS MATTER YE ARE BUSY LOOKING FOR STRIKERS WHEN WE HAVE DESSERS WITH 5 GOALS THIS SEASON,BONAVENTURE WITH 6 GOALS THIS SEASON,ONUACHU WITH 9 THIS TERM,ADI WHO IS THE ALL TIME SCORER OF PORTLAND,ORJI OKONKWO ETC AND WE ARE LOOKING FOR A STRIKER. IT MUST NOT BE IGHALO,WITH A TEAM WITH SQUAD THEIRS SUPPOSED TO BE COMPETITION.

In rohr I trust…. He knows the areas we need to strengthen… We can keep mentioning names till tomorrow…. We still av to be careful when removing some players for some… In the goalkeeping department, he has extended invitation to Maduka okoye in Germany…so surely, one of Akpeyi and ezenwa will have to suffer for it..uzoho is here to stay already.in the defence…he is working on inviting Kelvin akpoguma of hofeinham..we have ekong, Balogun, awaziem which means..omeruo might have to sit home. In the mid field, hes planing Joel obi’s re-call…ucge agbo and Mikel agu will av to put more efforts. In the attack… We are yet to see sarenren bazee playing, they want to consider martins too. So let’s wait. The man knows what he is doing…whoever he takes to world cup will be OK for me. What matters in each match is selection and approach to each match

  • IT MUST NOT BE ONLY V.MOSES,MIKEL AND OTHERS THAT HAS BEING THERE SINCE TO BE HONEST THEIR ARE MANY YOUNG STARS FROM NIGERIA WITH GREATER TALENT THAN THEM,EG HENRY ONYEKURU,ONUACHU AND OTHERS WHO ARE ALSO GOOD V.MOSES SHOULD BE GIVEN GOOD COMPETITION IN OTHER TO GET BETTER AND BETTER

  • HE SHOULD ALSO CHECK ON RYAN SANUSI TOO EARLIER TODAY HE SAID HE WOULD LIKE TO PLAY FOR NIGERIA AHEAD OF BELGIUM.
