Rohr Banks On Agu, Ajayi, Etebo For Serbia Friendly

By James Agberebi:

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has said that the trio of Mikel Agu, Junior Ajayi and Oghenekaro Etebo should be in London for the friendly against Serbia on Tuesday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The three players were not part of the Super Eagles squad that pipped Poland 1-0 in Friday’s friendly in Wroclaw.

But speaking in his press conference after the game against Poland, Rohr hinted the three players are expected to join their teammates in London.

“We will love to have other players who can arrive and replace our injured players, especially players like Mikel Agu, Junior Ajayi who will come from Egypt, he had a problem with visa but he can come to London,” Rohr said.

“So we have at least two players perhaps Etebo also, but Etebo was injured, we are waiting for the diagnosis of the doctor. If he comes, it will be interesting for us to have one player more to look ahead to another good match against Serbia.”

Reacting to Friday’s result, Rohr hailed players of the Super Eagles and Poland for being very competitive.

He added: “The game against Poland, though a friendly match, the two teams wanted to win but it was not so much friendly. We had a lot of duels, there were no gifts. It was good like that because it was good preparation. I hope the injuries are not bad, even the injuries to the Polish players, I hope all of them will be okay.”

He also went on to thank the Polish Football Federation for their hospitality, saying: “I want to thank officials of the Polish Football Federation for the warm welcome they gave us. It was a very good atmosphere we had in our hotel and in also our training sessions.”

  • Etebo creative midfielder we miss you,how i which you were in the game we would have won that game 2, victor moses try eagle best player and stil eagle problem should have allow iheanacho to take that freekick need to be humble

    • Far out! Blaming Victor for taking a free kick and scoring? Who determines which players should take particular kicks?

  • Paschal 9 months ago

Gernot Rohr is a perfect gentleman. Always humble, never arrogant. He even made out time to thank the Polish FA and to wish the injured Polish players well. Rohr is the true definition of a consummate professional. May God bless his work and make him successful in Russia. Amen.

  • Victor moses super eagle best player i hail you but be more humble to the national team know where to take ur freekick iheanacho should have take that freekick, etebo can do something for super eagle

  • If victor moses was to be king David he won’t give solomon the king

I don’t see Mikel agu coming to add anything to the squad… A player that will come off the bench a get booked under 5min he’s nt a world cup material…
Speaking of creative midfielder I think its high time Gernot rohr consider the person everyone thought will be the next jay jay okocha #Rabiu Ibrahim
Our wingers need to step up their game and learn how to ask opponent defenders questions and frustrate them..

    • Damilola 9 months ago

Very obvious you’ve lost touch with present football. Rabiu…..what?. Someone who can’t make the first team in the slovakian league? Sometimes, we just throw names about anyhow. This is 2018 not 2007. Let’s stop living in the past.

      • Lloyd 9 months ago

Thank you for the good reply,People always give names without knowing the player’s current form, How can they call a player that is playing in an obscure league that the national team can’t even provide good players….Marek Hamsik, Skrtel aren’t playing very well nowadays they are old and out of the scene….Slovakian league is a no go for a player wants to grace the world cup, and he isn’t not even playing regularly…pls give a good name that his playing regularly in a good league in europe.

      • Jensen Josh 9 months ago

Rabiu can’t make squad in slovakia ??? When was that….
He played very well for As trencin before he left..
Is that the issue or the quality he has to offer in the team..
Was yobo playing very for Norwich when he was called up in 2014, Gabriel Ruben was poor yet he made it to Brazil, Ramon azeez was playing for almeria relegation battlers yet he made it to brazil..
Rabiu is good, Omatsone Aluko,Nwakali,Nosa igiebor these are better options

    • Obi has knocked Mikel Agu out of the team with his performance against Poland

    • You made a good contribution on mikel Agu he doesn’t deserve a shirt in the present super eagles but concerning rabiu u lost it he’s far from equator.

Up Eagles for a hard fought Victory against Poland. Though the game was not impressive at all, we need to give kudos to the players to have defended the goal till the end. A few comments, Ighalo, needs stiff competition for No 9, can we try invite Gbolahan Salami. He is a bit strong and can create some turbulence in that position. Finally, Uzoho needs more confidence, I suggest we go with Enyeama, Uzoho and Ezenwa. But Uzoho and Ezenwa should always start while Enyeama used as back up.

    • charles emeka okwu 9 months ago

Ighalo did a good job against poland with his hold up play and strenght. For now he seem to be the undisputed #1 striker of the team. Even if rohr decides to have a look at other strikers salami is the least. We have upcoming goal poachers such as awoniyi who have been doing great things in belgium for mouscron, olayinka of zulte waregem, dennis of club brugge, cyriel dessers of utrecht and wolfsburg’s starlet oshimeh.

Imagine someone still taking about Rabiu Ibrahim in this modern days, is Super Eagle that cheap? Damn it, the national team isn’t a rehabilitation center for players who have lost it. Thank we are not in Keshi Era who took Uche Nwofor who didn’t play a single league game for Bevereen for a whole season yet the Magical late Keshi took him to the work cup. Ighalo was one of the best player on the pitch in the game against Poland he could not get and opportunity to score or create chances of scoring because we didn’t have any creativity in that mindfield on that night. If Mikel was on the field that very day we would have beaten Poland by atleast 3 nil.

  • I thought we are done with this Agu of a thing and have found Joel Obi which is better

  • I think we should invite two jokers for sub #9 and #10. VICTOR OSIME and
Nwakili jr. Or Ademoa Lookman if he is available for Nigeria.

    • Kycee 9 months ago

This is d 1st meaningful comment on dis article. Nwakali Jr shld be exposed on d no 10 role gradually. Apart 4rm Mikel, all other midfielders are holding & defensive…

      • charles emeka okwu 9 months ago

The super eagles is the apex team of the nation and not a grooming avenue for players. Nwakali jnr who couldnt cut it in a club as poor as vv venlo and now plays in the dutch 2nd division to be called up? Hell no! I doubt if rohr has such time to waste. Nwakali jnr after his under 17 performance have not done anything tangible in club football. He should be allowed to grow by playing for the next u20 and under 23 teams, perform well in his future club before being considered for a call up. An abdul ajagun who have been decent in the belgian top flight will be more ideal

Moses should always allow Iheanacho play freekicks. Iheanacho is the master in that area. He scores.

  • Lambert 9 months ago

CF delect me you hate the truth.
Agu is miles ahead of Ogu,
He covers more space that is modern day football.
His demand is higher no comparism.

  • I support u osimhen shld com nd giv ighalo real compete #9 but 4 de #10 etebo is the answer for victor moses he shld leave freekicks for iheanacho bcos he is better than him on that aspect

  • Up Eagles,But moses should have allowed iheanacho 2 take those freekicks,Agu is the key man 4 d position,GodBless!

What of Mikel Obi is he not coming?

  • Stephen Ayodele 9 months ago

Happy Apeyi did not make it and with an above average performance thy uzoho then with ezenwa and alampasu who I thinks is learning and not doing bad at his club even though he is staying put at the bench bcos if is that bad then the club would have off loaded him as white don’t cele mediocrity like we blacks do..Romero is always on bench at Man U but we all know how good Romero is.also dele ayenugba is full of experience too and constantly on duty at his club.i just don’t want this Apeyi in the team.,or we risk loosing the positive team spirit in the team bcos once there is a feeling that merit is not all that matters to get into the team then problems of lack of trust in the mgtment will set in and the Worldcup cam will become a calamity instead of been a prosperity to nigeria image.Am sounding this note of warning AGAIN,!!!!!!!!. Naija beware…”

  • Nawa O!….First “Rabiu Ibrahim”, then ” Gbolahan Salami”, Later..Dele Aiyenugba? Even you people clamouring for them will have to search on google before u know/pronounce the name of their club sides. I’m sure u people don’t know where they play.

Sean don’t mind our internet coaches. I have told to go and apply for any coaching job in one of our national teams.

  • Sean don’t mind our internet coaches. I have told them to go and apply for coaching job in one of our national teams. Salami plays in Karza wetin club that I can’t even pronounce the name and we are clamouring for him.

Iheanacho is a better free kick taker than Moses. That’s a fact. When Iheanacho is on the pitch Moses must let him have a go!

    • King Divine 9 months ago

I think direct fk should be left to Iheanacho while Moses should take indirect fk (Until Mikel returns). Moses is better with indirect fk than direct fk.

The world cup team to russia is all most done. The additon of joel obi to the team is added more quality to the team. Against the poles who did a great job with is energetic play and intelligence on and off the ball. He will make an ideal midfield pivot with ndidi an mikel playing upfront ahead of them as the #10. The right back position is between ebuehi and aina to fight for. Shehu though i wont blame him much because he isnt a rightback was awful first against argentina and now poland which shows he cant hold his own against worldclass teams. Ebuehi’s first test against the argies wowed many soccer loving nigerians and he followed that up with another brief but assured performance against the poles when brought in. To me he should be the teams first choice rightback. Idowu in the leftback position was jittery added with low confidence on the ball and was a suspect when ever the poles attacked from his wing. Not withstanding he is still better than elderson but my prefered player for that position is ola aina. Aina is versatile ie can play as a cb,rb and lb. For hull this season he has played more as a rightback but he few times he was deployed as a leftback he did marvelously well. Ekong and balogun arguably are the best cb duo in africa. Their chemistry, understanding and no nonsense approach have made them fearless. Mikel obi is no doubt the engine of this team. He is the orchestrator of the teams play and the whole team looks up to him so much. His leadership qualities are unmeasurable and for once he is giving his all for the team. Knowin he is old and will retire in no distance time is alot to worry about. I urge rohr and the nff to commence the scouting of a younger player who will understudy him before he retires and my picks are ex u17 skipper kelechi nwakali and sunderland and english u21 midfielder ovie ejaria. Uzoho did wonderfully well against poland but is he ready for a competition such as the fifa world cup? Hell no! Sentiments apart i urge the nff and rohr to recall enyeama during the next camping and monitor him closely, if comes good in some of the friendlies prior to the mundial then he should be in the team. With presence uzoho will learn alot and will have a mentor to look up to

Super eagles best 11 in my opinion
Gk enyeama(if fit and in for)
    Rb ebuehi
    Lb aina
    Cb ekong
    Cb balogun
    Dm ndidi
    Cm j.obi
    Am mikel obi
    rw v.moses
    Lw iwobi
    Cf ighalo

    • You too sabi…but my issue with enyeama is that he is not playing….if he was…then fine….but he isnt

  • We need kalechi nwakali in the midfield to take up mikel position when he retires.
