Rohr Explains Super Eagles Defeat To Croatia, Tactics, Mikel, Etebo Roles, Iwobi’s Substitution

Rohr Explains Super Eagles Defeat To Croatia, Tactics, Mikel, Etebo Roles, Iwobi’s Substitution

By Nnamdi Ezekute in Kaliningrad:
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has stated that his team still has their destiny in their hands as there is still hope of them qualifying for the round of 16 despite losing to Croatia in their Group D opening game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
The Super Eagles got their campaign off to a losing note after losing 2-0 to Croatia following an own goal from Oghenekaro Etebo and a second-half penalty converted from Luka Modric.
“We now have to get four points if we want to qualify,” Rohr said in his post-match press conference. “We are only one point behind the second-placed teams (Argentina and Iceland) Nothing is lost, everything is in our hands  so we will be positive that we can do it.
“We have the youngest team in the World Cup let them learn from this match and try to do better.
“We saw Iceland’s  game against Argentina, they are a very strong team. We can do better  than what we did against Croatia.”
Rohr expressed satisfaction with the organisation of the Super Eagles play despite the defeat, promising that they will work on their approach to set plays.
“You are not satisfied when you don’t score. We are satisfied with the organisation of the team defensively but we didn’t have so many opportunities to score. Alex Iwobi did well in the beginning later Ahmed Musa came in to bring his speed to the match and he has the chance to start the next game.
“I think the organisation was okay. It was the first time we played like that in the midfield with (Wilfred) Ndidi who was coming back after a long injury with Etebo and Mikel Obi. So when they played together for the first time it was a bit complicated.
“I think this young players need time. Sometimes it’s naivety when it comes to set pieces but we will work on it.”
Rohr gave reasons why the Super Eagles did not switch to a back three as they did during their friendly games.
“We didn’t concede in normal play, we conceded only two goals from set pieces,” he explained. “This is not a question of tactics or system. Our system was okay, we cannot play with three (at the back) when there is only one centre forward.
“We played with four defenders because there were three Croatian strikers who are very strong. I was satisfied with the organisation of the team but what we missed in the game is being professional from set pieces. Each game is different. We know we can play with three centre backs but it was not a good day (Saturday) to do that.”
When quizzed on why skipper  Mikel Obi operated as an offensive midfielder, Rohr said:
“Since I have been in Nigeria for two years now  we play Mikel in this role as an offensive midfielder. It was going very well throughout our games and the team was built around him.
“I know he played in a defensive midfield role and I know in China he plays offensive and defensive. When we don’t have the ball everybody is defensive and when we have the ball everyone is offensive. With Etebo and Ndidi, we had two good defensive midfielders who dis very well against Croatia despite playing for the first time together.
“Mikel tried his best but it is not easy when you have to play against  (Luka) Modric  and (Ivan) Rakitic. When you see the clubs these players play and compare it to where our players play, there is a little difference.”
And on why Alex Iwobi was substituted in the game, Rohr said:”Alex Iwobi did very well in the three weeks we had our training camps and he deserved to start the game. He had a big work to do defensively against right-back (Sime Vrsaljko) who was very offensive.
“He had to work a lot to contain him and was missing the energy for his offensive game. But he did well in his tactical role. He tried also with some dribbles to be dangerous. So he did well. It was not his fault that We lost the game, it was the mistakes we did from the corners that cost us.”

Mr Rohr we know about all you complains before this game but failure to do the right think by playing the right players at the right position is now hunting us. I get mad when you talk about Croatia Right back been offensive when you benched our own offensive right back to play Shehu. Bros the Jersey party is over I get, do and go after all your experiment at the wc.. ighalo Shehu and etebo playing as a defensive midfielder will get you a sacking letter

    • Naija Man 5 months ago

I don’t think this man cares any sack. He is 64 and very close to retirement. Ighalo makes a lot of money in China and it makes sense to conclude that he (Ighalo) parleys with Mikel since they are both in China. I saw something fishy the moment kept using Ighalo match after match despite his below-par display. Ighalo led the U20 attack in Egypt in 2009 and the team did not progress. Mikel has led the Eagles to their 3 straight defeats in less than two months. Mikel does not appear to me like an individual who will allow Iwobi to outshine him in that #10 position.
ROHR acts like he is a SABOTEUR. He invited Henry Onyekeru and Kayode Olanrewaju but hardly used them. He included SImy Nwanko but only used him when the game is over. He played Ola Aina out of position. He played Kelechi Iheanacho out of position on multple occasions. Why has he refused to play Mikel in a defensive midfield role?
ICELAND is very compact and solid defensively. They are very strong too. So the Eagles should forget about 2018 World Cup. The psychic pig has deceived them.

What they are simply saying is that he should go back to winning ways I mean it’s obvious that he is not doing the same thing he used to do as at last year when he qualify for the world cup unbeaten

We all can see it now that we don’t have a coach. Rohr still stick to his ineffective tactics and cursed us this match with deployment of players to wrong positions, Imagine Mikel playing No10 for us ? We will keep going in circles since we hated our our own, Amaju pinnick & Gernot Rohr sabotaged our players talents for their selfish interest. Nobody can tell me that if Kelechi has started this match iwobi and Ebuhi also allow mikel to play his usual defensive midfield role that Croatia will not be two goals down in the first half instead of us of losing this match & Croatia look as if they are that good which they not at all in this match . Once again Rohr has nothing to offer us with this young talented players so pls stop blabbing, & pack your bag biko enough of this embarrassing tactics , We have enough home Coaching crew to get this Job done better with the kind of support you have received so far which is unprecedented in our history of preparing for a world cup tournament . Pinnick white Messiah Coach you cost us this match period because in open play we are better than the Croatia. This man is not a Coach.Go home or you and Pinnick will be shown the exit door period.

Mr red snapper continue with ur excuses, u left five goood players at home, u went to World Cup with bunch average players, what do u expect, miracle abi?you will lose all the remaining matches if you continue to play Mikel, Ighalo, Shehu,

  • Chris 5 months ago

I don’t understand what iwobi does in the middle when he should be assiting ighalo in front. We have only one 10,Obi Mikel. let him wait for his time and strike for now. In all sincerity, Nigeria can not defeat the Iceland I saw against Argentina. Let them just return so we can prepare for nations cup.

    • Joseph Ibeh 5 months ago

He didn’t play iwobi in the middle my friend….he played him as a winger…. Mikel played the position that was meant for Iwobi. The coach still dry experiment for world cup….no time for excuses…we saw the game and read the errors in tactics. But since he knew all these at post match briefing how come he never changed the tactics to save the game? We don’t have a smart Coach who can make on the spot analysis that will yield immediate results.

  • Smart 5 months ago

Somebody with all urgency should find a way to tell our coach to stop making life difficult for himself Nd d team, just play dis players to their strength,e.g(1) Moses has become a better ball marker over d last two years I. Chelsea, but has poor delivery and finishing, that will tell u that he is better playing from deep positions(wing back)he has d ability to defend and push forward, anything outside that is stupidity from d coach.(2) iwobi enjoy his football from d middle (3)etebo cannot be dropped now,but a good coach can make him do a good job at that left wing back role with his strength at pushing forward Nd his marking abilities dt guy will do a good job so Mikel can come back and play a double pivot with ndidi freeing iwobi for d no 10 rile (4)kelechi iheanacho needs to be playing behind ighalo for God sake, his combination with iwobi behind ighalo is just what we need.. conclusion
We need to play 3,5,2 formation to bring out d best in our squad.
    Ozoho(keeper)
    Mekong,balogu,ogu(back three)
    Moses,ndidi,mikel,etebo(middle men)
Iwobi ,kelechi(attacking midfielders)note not wingers as Moses Nd etebo have a combined responsibility to defend and be wingers
    Ighalo or dummy upfront,

Wrong tactics, Players Players played in wrong positions and wrong players at the right time all these contributed to the defeat. The coach should flash back on to the March between Argentina and Nigeria in same Russia. particularly the second half. Iwobi, Kelechi and Musa played in their right position and we got the desired result particularly.

Same thing happened in second half of the Match between Nigeria and England. We have the right players irrespective of their ages but the problem is the right tactics.

  • Chima E Samuels 5 months ago

And on a good day which coach subs the most effective player on the field…. iwobi was far the only danger in the team that could have scored a goal but our coach substitute him so that we can loss the game. A white man will never help us defeat a fellow white but will do well at cup of nations against black countries take it or leave it

    • Edoman 5 months ago

This stupid and corrupt couch must go. After all. he has been paid his huge salary up to July. He must have been laughing to his mates that Africans are nuts, Look folks, white man will never allow Blacks to beat another white in football.
that is what this stupid Rohr did. Yes, win against Africans in qualifiers is ok but, coming to a white Russia and want to beat white fellow, no way. Expect another beatings from Iceland on Thursday. The NFF Board should be dissolved to allow the
Giwa Group to serve the 200 millions Nigerians. This NFF Board are too comfortable in their skin, that is why they allow this white stupid guy to take us for a ride.

  • Rubber tapper for a coach. Left the best legs at home, as if that’s not enuogh. The ones he selected, he played them out of possitions

Mr Gernot Rohr, if you have an ambition to really upgrade your CV with Nigeria and go far in this tournament, use 3-5-2 formation constantly, bench Shehu for Tyronne Ebuehi, play Mikel as a defensive midfielder or bench him for Etebo, play Iwobi as a creative midfielder, bench Moses who dulls our game with simulations, and finally pair Simeon Nwankwo with Ighallo. He that has ears should listen to what the spirit is telling his people. A word is enough for the wise.

This is the right message… Simy should start next match

  • Akintunde Akinmade 5 months ago

After the match yesterday, I just left to sleep as I couldn’t believe our super eagles will be this shambolic. Our MVP “Gernot Rorh” refused to come to the party. The formation was suspect, for a power midfield team of the Croatians, how on earth will he employ the 4-2-1-2-1 formation when we have tested and succeeded with the 3-5-2. How can he be learning at the World Cup stage? What is the essence of the friendlies if we repeat our mistakes? To break the team further these are my summations:1. No team has ever won the WC with a foreign coach and I can now see why. The earlier we start to give our indigenous coaches the needed support the better 2. Uzoho though decent is still a greenhorn and remain so. 3.Who gave Victor Moses the charge to play without the team.He was playing all to himself without contributing to the team tactical movement, and diving all over the field as if he was a swimmer. Almost got a yellow card in one of those diving sessions. Was he playing to the coach’s instructions. 4.Mikel has no business being our attacking midfielder, let him revert to his Chelsea role and push Etebor upfront who has a lot to offer. 5. Ighalo should not be our main striker, how many goals has he scored since the Cameroonian strike at Uyo? Even Iheanacho has a better scoring record since the advent of GR.If he must be played, then he should be supported with either Kelechi or Simeon. 6.Iwobi should also be considered for the centre of the pack where his vision and intelligent passes will be put to better use. I still believe if we can correct these lapses we can still ruffle a few feathers. For the Iceland game, we should consider the 3-5-2 and use Ebuehi in the wing back role as wing play is our best bet to open the defensive, calm, colective & calculated Icelandic gang. So my formation will be Uzoho-Ogu, Balogun,Ekong- Ebuehi, Mikel,Ndidi, Etebo, Moses – Simeon & Ighalo. If you look at my formation you’ll find out that I do not have space for Idowu,Victor Moses should be able to man this spot well that he has done couple of times in Chelsea while Ebuehi covers the other flank. Mikel should return to the pivot while Etebor pushed upfront to express himself. Iwobi and Kelechi can come in later when needed to refresh the team. Up Eagles, something tells me we might qualify. So I don’t know why some of our fickle and fair weather fans like Naija man just dey para after one match.

      • Real coach wetin? What has uzoho done to you..he wasn’t at fault for any of the goals..stop looking for scape goats please

    • @ Akinbade you are spot on some of the issues I have talked about before (1) It takes patriotism to win the world cup as far football is concern & No Nation has ever won the World Cup with a foreign Coach so if we continue this our hatred for each other especially towards our local Coaches like the way this Current NFF Administration led by Pinnick Amaju hunted The Big Boss SK till his death After AFCON succeeess we will continue to run in circle because yesterday game was a sabotage for me , our boys was far far better than Croatia which even our Local Coach with the level of Motivation this unfortunate White Messiah Coach by Amaju pinnick is receiving can do better 100% with right deployment of players. We can still qualify if this man do the needful tactical placement of players anything less we are going home period. Just look at the way Mexico is turning Germany apart.Guys we talked about Rohrs ineffective tactics before still he stubbornly refused to listen so I don’t understand what is going on with him over some of our players. Something is going on within. My take though.

    • ovoke 5 months ago

Bro you have spoken well and don’t blame anyone who get annoyed. The way well played yesterday gives no hope about out future at the world cup; except a drastic change is effected. Mr rohr, should forget is skin colour and humble himself to learn. There are better coaches than him here in Nigeria; for me siasia can do better than him

  • Israel Akinlawon 5 months ago

Again, I want Gernot Rohr to understand that 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formations will not work at the world Cup, this is not AFCON. The simple reason is that, they have better players that will use the 4-3-3 formation effectively, as most of them play for clubs like Man City, Barca, Bayern Munich, Juventus, etc. which use the pattern on daily basis. The only pattern you can use to frustrate them is 5-3-2 or or 4-6-1 like Iceland did if I you beautiful to defend outrightly.

  • Sunnyb 5 months ago

I hope Rohr is watching Mexico vs Germany, see how Mexico played in 1st half. That’s how Nigeria used to play.

  • I believe some blind nigeria wil stil not learn that we dont have a coach

I have been asking this question, iheanacho got injury?

    3 5 2 formation also got injury?

    Ighalo did he charmed GR?

hey you gernot rohr pls leave dis country for us dog coach

  • well from what i saw and observed that 4,2,3,1 would have succeed if GR make use of iwobi in that 10 role because he iwobi would av supported Moses as he was pushing for attack and deploy etebo in left flank
that etebo has a lot to offer
2 why putting shehu all the time when we have a natural right back, he our weakest point plus he can not help moses in attack
3 3,5,2 is our best formation for this eruopian team because them sabi that our original formation pass us

    MUST READ: Gernot Rohr!

    WIN THE FIFA WC:
It Is Long Overdue, Or Get FIRED!

Coming on the back of a most shambolic display by the SE in WC history, falling without resistance to an average Croatian team was heart breaking.
Many Nigerians were badly hurt & humiliated and all earlier commentators here have said so elaborately.
Was Gernot Rohr under some African mystical spell?
He must be, probably not, or how can you explain his faulty match formation, selection of starting players, match tactics, 2nd half uninspired substitutions & the late timing?
What was Odion Ighalo doing in his starting eleven (11)? That guy has not scored in 6 previous matches for the team.
    (Juju? Some opinions, or Egunje?).
Why was Shehu there? Ahead of a fit Tyrone.
    Something is just not right..
The result showed how poorly a 4-2-3-1 deployed, & off target u can get.
Besides, these bunch don’t represent our best legs.
Yes, I was never bothered initially by concerns over Eagles pedestrian performances in some of their friendly matches because of the perceived pedigree & personality of GR.
He kept deaf ears to my warnings & fans reacted hastily to my critical exposés. Today same issues are being raised.
We felt he could run along with his assurance to Nigeria.
Afterall he insisted test matches were laboratories. Give him time. We agreed.
The Nigeria national team handler is regarded as a “tactical fox” always wit his nose to the ground by many.
We rated him very highly as not just an everyday-road-side coach.
He was also highly recommended by other top ranked coaches as the MAN with the profile to rebuild the SE & help Nigeria excel in international meets.
Nff Boss, Mervin Amaju Pinncick had personally contacted Coach Arsene Wenger to seek counsel for a “world-class coach”.
It was the “crafty fox” they all seemed to be pointing to.
I have taken time to analyse the football career of GR; from his playing days at Bayern Munich, as Director of youth football in Germany, to his last days as Coach of clubs in France & respected national teams in Africa.. He seemed well bred, disciplined, crafty & focused.
A checkered history of success in his career. All that appear fading off so fast wit his tasteless management of the SE as exposed in the grade A friendlies & now Croatia.
    Why this write-up?
I hold no personal interest in the Coach besides the desire to see him succeed & rebuild the belief of supporters who recline on SE victories for succour; being the only event that wipes away their economic pains in a difficult socio-economic terrain as Nigeria’s.
The Nigeria economy is huge, feeding primarilly on a growing reserve of national crude & gas export revenue annually.
Crude Oil unofficial revenue figures alone for 2018 is massive, calculated on a conservative international oil price of $70 per barrel & at 2.1million barrels production each day of the year,(OPEC Quota).
This translates to over $50billion or N19.3 trillion for Crude Oil alone @$1 to N360.
Gas export is huge as well.
IGR fetches over N10 trillions annually.
    However, corruption is our bane..
Successive adminstrations have tackled but failed to reduce poverty levels of the populace.
So, there is massive deficits in social & core institutional infrastructures & service delivery systems, putting much pressure on the middle & lower classes of Nigerian citizenry.
The critical mass are worse-off & treated to little or no welfare, or social-security support programmes to improve living conditions, the very reasons Nigerians carry long faces even on holidays and in social- cultural activities they should be celebrating.
A man cannot celebrate on empty stomach..
Such is the average Nigerian plight in a corruption laden polity.
Football therefore, becomes a health prescription therapy for HBP once Eagles are participating and winning, but disastrous if results are otherwise.
Football is the panacea for health related issues.
Little wonder that big football events as Afcon or the Mundial create strong diversions from all economic & sociopolitical brohaha for Nigerians to unwind and forget their ubiquitous challenges.
Football, like religion, is the peoples’ opium that creates illusion of satisfaction even where none exists.
Against this background, millions of nigeria fans seek to rest their troubled thoughts to cheer away their sorrows as the National team engages in a brawl of soccer supremacy in the comity of nations.
This SE cannot afford not to progress beyond the Semifinals, or the Government must be ready to conduct mass burial ceremonies.
From sokoto to Uyo, Lagos to Jemita, Jos, Benin, Damaturu, kabba, Warri, Keffi to kubwa the atmosphere will remain electric as the world cup fever takes a frenzy mode and SE the central theme for fans.
GR has unleashed his “Monsters (?)” on the World stage.
He has nurtured, tutored & strategized with them enough to know what & how to get the best from them..
He just must succeed.. No more time for experimentation but to serve to the viewing world the soup he has long been cooking.
Certainly not what we witnessed on Saturday.
I believe he will get it right as two more matches unfold.
He has not failed to give assurances at critical interviews.
He told the media that he will be ready to take on the World after close camping.
    Is he truly ready?
Nigerians want the SE gaffer to harness the WC Trophy now or go home.
    It is long overdue.
    I agree..
Winning the WC may not be a realistic target, many argue, but GR believes it is a possibility.
Does GR know what he is talking about?
“But Semifinals might be more realistic so we don’t set our sights too high”..he once assured.
Can fans count on the technical prowess of the Coach, the skills, never-say-die spirit of Nigerians, and the support of Nff and sympathy of fifa to break the WC jinx for once?
Is it possible? Anything is possible in Nigeria!
Just win the WC for your fans by all means: crook or by hook.
    Africa needs the WC trophy.
Most fans don’t believe in superstition, and the fables from the PSYCHIC PIG mean nothing to many.
Should Gernot Rohr fail to go beyond the Russia 2018 group stage he should be fired at once.
That would assuage fans’ pains and also serve a good lesson to future coaches.
    Meanwhile, count on my support!
I am Super Eagles No.1 fan & diehard critic.
    Eagles for life!

    • Africa needs the world cup trophy…work it out..it isn’t gotten through prayers..let’s stop playing d blame game…Africa can never have d European or south American football system in d next 20 years..stop beating around d bush and be realistic for once..u want to compare d half baked monkey post football our kids play to the proper football system that is in seen in world powers standing from Under 6..Nigerians the miracle believers

I think it is too late coach, the damage has already been done.We have the opportunity to correct our mistakes which keep repeating itself prior to the world cup but you keep giving the same excuses up till now.It is either the team is the youngest or if I may get you well that the Nigerian captain Mikel inferior to a midfielder like rakitic or modric who plays in top European club. There is no way this team can perform magic against an Argentina team or even iceland who is now better motivated with a point from Argentina game. The first match is very important in a group like this.To be Frank with you Mr Rohr, I have the feelings that you are sabotaging our national team because too many players are playing out of position.

  • We Nigerians are pretty funny..u call names like layoff, awoniyi and every other odd name out of frustration..have they become world class all of a sudden.I never agreed with our formation doesn’t give us d divine right to beat Croatia no matter how well we play..we don’t have any footballing culture..our local sides gets trounced in African competitions and we talk as if we have Messis and ronaldos in nigeria..how many of you here would spend ur last farthing to send ur kids to proper footballing schools in nigeria..u guys talk real trash here..world cup after world cup we always have excuse..instead of us to focus on developing a proper footballing system..we hide behind our phones and type all sorts of rubbish as if we are d ones to become the scouts..croatian clubs have proper academies that’s y a country of abt 4 million pple can produce such stars..see the crazy names u guys are calling out here..God have mercy

I pleaded him to play kelechi because that boy has big heart for a massive occasion like yesterday match and he didn’t listen.

Rohr should watch Brazil vs Switzerland maybe he would learn one or two things from that match.switzerland is playing 3-5-2 against Brazil

  • Hautside 5 months ago

No need testing the 4 2 3 1 formation. Its obvious it cannot work with this SE…The formation is only adopted for teams who are good at playing set pieces. The lone Striker must be good in the air and have a good heading ability. 2… It can also work when you have very versatile wingers who can drive in and break defences with their dribbles. Example is the Neymar and Williams winger in the Brazilian team.
Also, the formation to be used for a match depends on the opposition. 3-5-2 would not have worked against croatia or most European teams. This formation works well against teams that play attacking and pressing football. It worked against England and Argentina because these 2 teams play attacking football and not a mid-field concentrated football.it is a good formation for counter attacks.

Nigeria is not utilizing her weapon. The strength of this team is her midfield(defensive midfield)..we have Ndidi, Etebo, ogu and then (the team players onazi and joel)..4-3-1-2 would have worked against Croatia….use Balogun and Ekong as CB…Ebuehi and Idowu as RB and LB respectively… THEN the joker is the 3 man defensive mid field… Have you wondered what the combination of Ogu,Ndidi and Etebo can do to any team? With these combo, the mid field is stabilized and the RB and LB can make comfortable overlapping runs because they have got their ass covered. You can then play Mikel(skippo and captain) behind the 2 big men strikers of simi and Igalo..when you have moses, iwobi, iheanacho on the bench, then you know you have super subs and game changers. Iwobi can replace Mikel, one of the 3 mid fielders or even play upfront as 8. Moses can also play 8. So also kelechi…Don’t forget that Etebo and OGU are also good going forward with Ndidi staying put!!

GR please try this and thank me later! None of Etebo,oGu and Etebo deserve staying on the bench.Use the 3.No harm in trying sir

  • Abeg Okocha should come back to the team and this time as a coach, this German is playing us o

  • Mr Rohr must go! Enough experiment with our Team

It is now clear that we are being sabotaged! Wrong formations , players asked to play in the wrong places…..that can only be one thing! Sabotage!

  • Can someone please tell me something about Etebo I don’t know. This guy was voted by Caf as the best young player in africa some years back, he was the guy who scored 4 goals in the Olympics in a match at the last Olympics. I watched the match between Barcelona and LAS palmas his club few months ago and he shone brilliantly in a midfield that had Messi and Rakatic . Yesterday, despite the below par performance of his team, he still distinguished himself for the whole world to see. Yet this player has just been signed by Stoke City for 5 yrs after relegation from premiership. This kind of player should be in the top leagues of Europe. Who is really to blame? His Agents, Advisers or himself , this player has sold himself short bigtime!!

AM JUST GETTING OUT OF THE SHOCK OF YESTERDAY’S MATCH. NOT THAT I WAS EXPECTING OUR EAGLES TO WHITEWASH THE CROATIANS BUT I WAS NOT ALSO EXPECTING US TO BE BEATEN. BEFORE I BEGIN TO STRESS MY POINTS LET ME FIRST TELL ALL COMRADES THAT NOBODY ON THIS FORUM WANTED NIGERIA TO FAIL IN RUSSIA.ALTHOUGH THERE ARE CRITICS YET NONE WANTED SUPER EAGLES TO SUFFER DEFEAT.
Personally, I WAS EXPECTING EAGLES TO BEAT THE CROATIANS AFTER WATCHING THE GAME FOR 15 MINUTES ,THEN IT WAS APPARENT THAT OUR OPPONENT was A LITTLE GENTLE WITH US KNOWING THAT RUSHING  AND DRAGGING THE GAME WITH US WILL BURN THEM OUT AND THIS WOULD BE SUICIDAL .THEY HAD A GAME PLAN AND IT WAS TO MAKE USE OF THEIR SET PIECE KNOWING FULLY THAT MOST AFRICAN TEAMS ARE SUSPECTIBLE IN THESE AREAS. I WILL CONCLUDE THAT WE LOST TO THEM NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE BETTER BUT BECAUSE OUR COACH FAILED TO USE THE NIGERIA FACTOR AND THE NIGERIA SPIRIT.  EAGLES WILL NEVER GET ANYTHING RIGHT IF WE  FAIL TO INITIATE URGENCY IN OUR GAME AND BE PHYSICAL. RUGGEDNESS AND PHYSICALITY BLENDED WITH SPEED WOULD HAVE KILLED THE CROATS. WE DONT NECESSARY NEED TO HAVE ABUNDANCE OF SKILL. TAKE FOR EXAMPLE OUR MATCH AGAINST ATM, OBSERVE THE WAY WE MOVE THE BALL WITH SPEED AND RUGGEDNESS, EVERYBODY WAS INVOLVED IN THE PLAYING, SO ALSO THE GAME AGINST ARGENTINA THERE WAS FLUIDITY. SHOULD I SAY OUR BOYS ARE NOT COMMITTED ENOUGH.  MODERN DAY FOOTBALL CARELESS ABOUT NAMES OR SKILL BUT URGENCY AND QUICKNESS, LOOK AT MEXICO, SWITZERLAND THESE TEAMS PLAYED AS A UNIT AND WERE QUICK IN PASSING THE BALL AROUND, BUT OUR TEAM YESTERDAY WERE JUST EITHER PASSING THE BALL BACKWARD OR BEING SLUGGISH TO MOVE IT FORWARD.THE ONLY TWO PLAYERS THAT WERE WILLING TO BE ADVENTUROUS WERE ETEBO AND IWOBI.IWOBI WAS WILLING TO TAKE THE BALL UPFRONT BUT NO SUPPORT, WHILE ETEBO TOO WAS INSTRUCTED  NOT TO MOVE AHEAD OF MIKEL WHO TO ME WAS OUR WEAKEST LINK.TWO WEEKS AGO ONE ARGENTINAL SUPERSTAR SAID THE PROBLEM OF NIGERIA TEAM IS MIKEL BECAUSE HE WAS ALWAYS SLOW TO MOVE THE PLAY INTO SPACE.

ANOTHER THING I NOTICED IN THIS WORLD CUP THOUGH I MIGHT BE WRONG IS THAT AFRICAN FOOTBALL ARE OVER RATED.NO WONDER BIG CLUBS DONT BUY AFRICAN PLAYERS. AFRICAN TEAMS LACK TACTICAL SENSE TO PLAY IN THE WORLD CUP SUCCESSFULLY. AM AFRAID IN 30 YEARS TO COME, TEAMS, FROM AFRICA MIGHT STRUGGLE TO BEAT OCEANIC OR ASIANS NOT TO TALK ABOUT EUROPEANS OR AMERICANS.

IN OUR NEXT MATCH SHEHU SHOULD BE BENCHED OTHERWISE I MUST HAVE TO BELIEVE NFA IS TRYING TO IMPRESS THE NORTH. EBUEHI SHOULD REPLACE HIM, IGHALO ALSO SHOULD BE MADE TO SIT ON THE BENCH BECAUSE HE IS ON THE FIELD TO FLEX MUSCLE NOT TO SCORE GOALS.OUR FANTASTIC CAPTAIN SHOULD BE RESTRED AND LET THE YOUNG ONES THAT STILL HAVE CHANCE OF APPEARING IN NEXT WORLD CUP BE USED .IWOBI CAN PLAY AT THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK WHILE ETEBO AND NDIDI,TWO WORKAHOLICS PALYERS CAN SUPPORT HIM FROM THEIR DEFENSIVE POSTIONS . MOSES TO ME KILL THE MORALE OF THE PLAYERS BY HANGING TO THE BALL TOO MUCH THEREBY ALLOWING THE OPPONENT TO RELAUNCH THEIR DEFENSIVE POSITION.

  • ADEMOLA THE PRESIDENT 5 months ago

MR LADI ETEBO THOUGH A GOOD PLAYER CAN NOT JUST PLAY IN TOP EUROPEAN CLUBS UNLESS HE IS CONSISTENT, BESIDES I DONT THINK AGE IS ON HIS SIDE I MIGHT BE WRONG ABOUT THIS.

SOMEBODY SHOULD HELP US TELL THE COACH THAT IF HE IS SCARED TO BENCH MIKEL THEN HE SHOULD RESTRICT HIM TO THE DEFENSIVE ANGLE. LOOKING AT OUR MATCH AGAINST ARGENTINA IT WAS IWOBI AND IHEANACHO THAT WERE MAKING LIFE UNBEARABLE FOR THE ARGENTINAS.THEY COULDNT COPE WITH THEIR SPEED AND AGGRESSIVENESS,SO WHY ALL OF A SUDDEN IS HE USING MIKEL IN THAT ROLE .

I STILL DONT UNDERSTAND THE RATIONALE OF TAKING ECHIEJILE BECAUSE HE MIGHT END UP PLAYING NO PART IN THE WORLD CUP,THESE ARE THE PLAYERS I THINK WE PLAY IN THE NEXT WORLD CUP NDIDI,IHEANACHO,IWOBI,UZOHO,EBUEHI,. THE REST PLAYERS WILL FIZZLE OUT AT THE PASSAGE OF TIME.

  • How can you fix a problem, if you don’t first admit that you have a problem??? It seems to me Rohr does not realize the grave mistake he made in the tactics and formation he chose, which means he is liable to do it again. And you all know what the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over gain, while expecting a different result”. It’s well with Nigeria..

  • OBOWARE EZON-EBI PAUL 5 months ago

this coach is a joke why play players outside were they play in their respective clubs Moses should play right back Inhenasho should play left back three defenders two defensive midfielders three attackers this is our best formation

  • Guys I’m in no way a fan of GR8 as I have said it many times that he’s selection and starting line up leaves much to be desired. If you say play Mikel as a defensive midfielder rather than an attacking midfielder as that is the role he is most familiar with, I agree. If you say play ebuehi ahead of shehu, I would say yes as he is a natural fullback/winger per his club performance. If you say play Moses as a wingback I will also agree as he is used in that position many times for Chelsea and is used to playing there, I will agree as as someone pointed out he is good at going forward and defending but his finishing and pull outs are not the greatest. Finally, if you say bench ighalo for a kelechi or simy I will also agree as ighalo has been firing blank since his flying eagles day till now.

But to be fair, if 9ja had won the game yesterday most of us would have said what a master plan by GR devising a formation that neutralized the midfield of Croatia with modric-rakitic-rebic and also their front-end of mandzukic-kramaric-perisic. We wouldn’t be complaining about formation or tactics if we had won period.

Secondly, during all qualifiers, Shehu played as a right back and even won some man of the match awards if am not mistaken. He was considered one of best defenders in the team even with ebuehi. I remember a game I think against czech republic that ebuehi didn’t play too well he was crucified here. Called clueless and even soft, while others demanded for shehu. Similarly, Moses played as a winger with a free role during the qualifiers and everyone here hailed him as the best player in 9ja. We even said without him 9ja wouldn’t have qualified for the world cup. Note, he never played as a wingback then ooooo. Same with Mikel, we even said without he’s leadership and presence 9ja players are clueless. Mikel was praised as the best thing since sliced bread. But now he is too old and should be benched or thrown out. Even Iwobi played as a winger during the qualifiers with Mikel as a AM and still scored.

What has changed? The answer is that we lost the game. Most of you guys know it would have been a different tune had we won the game with d same set of players and same formation. Again am not advocating for GR but just telling it as it is. I still believe and u should too. We don’t have any other country to support other than 9ja.

God bless 9ja and its people

Nigerians are not stupid. If they played well and lost, be sure Nigerians will applaud them(the way we all applauded the team b that lost against athletico Madrid).

Somethings might have worked during the qualification but won’t just work during the tournament proper. What has changed? The opponents. In the qualifiers, we played against African teams who are weak and not as strong as foreign teams. This is the world cup. Am sure yesterdays tactics would have worked if d opponent was Saudi Arabia. Lol

Finally, football is not about loyalty. The fact that you scored the winning goal for the qualification doesn’t mean you have an automatic shirt. Gotze won the world cup for Germany but he is no where to be found. Sane was exceptional for Germany during qualifiers and friendlies but he was dropped. Same as Fabregas. Shehu might have played well in the qualifiers but Ebuhi has a better form. Etebo played fewer matches than Onazi in the qualifiers but He was Nigeria best player last night. If we get the right tactics, we can beat any team. Nigerians know that this team has great players. They just need to combine well.

      • Hautside, great contribution and I see ur point. Here are my response to some of what you wrote.

As regards to the SE vs ATM match, though the players played well. These croatian team would have used them for esiewu. We are talking of a team that paraded top talents in teams like barca, inter, liverpool, real madrid, juventus, hoffenheim etc who are regular starters in these clubs as opposed to a couple starters like oblak and thomas partey (gameiro, Correa, torres, are all subs at ATM) paraded against us. Dont get me wrong we tried but still lost. Even ATM main team will have a hard time beating this croatian side.

Would you consider Senegal weak opposition? Did we play Senegal with a different formation. The Senegalese played the same formation against croatia in their friendly and tge croats where lucky to have gotren away with a win that day. To say that that formation only works in Africa or middle east where the opposition is weaker is not being fair. How many countries play the 352 formation we are all clamouring for now. If tge coach hadnt used that formation yo great effect against argentina, how many of us will be clamouring for this formation? Talk true.

Again I do understand what you are saying and the logic behind it, but are you honestly telling me that if we had won the game yesterday and still played the way we did, with the formation the coach utilized and the personnel used, that you will be criticizing them negatively? If your answer is in the affirmative, then I think you will be amongst the minority. Understand that the goals they scored us could have been scored on any team participating at this world cup. Own goals and penalties occur in football.

Finally, I just think our team needs more concentration and try avoiding stupid elementary mistakes and we will be fine.

        Just my opinion.

God bless 9ja and its people

Bro, this world cup is so proving to you that football is not about the club sides the players play for. It is a team thing. MEXICO BEAT the all star Germany. Argentina couldn’t win Iceland. Brazil couldn’t win Swiz and France struggled against the little known Australians.

I had to see Nigeria vs Croatia again, yes, we player well but the truth is just that we did not create chances in an open play. Forget the goals we conceded, we did not create chances. 4-2-1-3 is proving to be colloquial in football. Brazil user the same and did not flourish. Even the croats, did not create chances too with their 4-2-3-1…if you are playing with such formation, you should play with attackers that are ruthless and good in the air. Also, your wingers should be the Neymar and Hazard type.
Again, our RB and LB did not do well going forward. They just did not support the attack. This team doesn’t have the world-best like players but by playing together, they can do wonders. A lone striker won’t work(maybe except we rent Rinaldo, lewandoski etc). We don’t have the players to accommodate that formation.
To win the world cup or even do well, we need to create chances. We need to play from the middle of the park with 2 strikers upfront. We aren’t good at set pieces and don’t have exceptional lone strikers. Its the world cup and not the qualifiers… Even the SE players are divided about the tactics. Honestly, that croatian team is ordinary. Come to think of it too, we have Chelsea, Arsenal and Leicester players too. Ndidi was the best Tackler in EPL last season.SE is just not ordinary. We need the right tactics.
GO Eagles. God bless Us and God bless Nigeria too.

There is no fluidity in our game and no game plan. We played as if we had come to the world cup to add to the number. We must play the Nigerian way, speed, precision, tenacity and ruggedness. The world cup is not a tournament where we will come to experiment tactics not experimented during qualifiers or the friendlies. Please Rohr don’t keep your good players on the bench. In our next match, Shehu should be benched for Ebuehi, Mikel should rest and allow Ndidi and Ogu play in the defensive, Etebo should go up-field with Iwobi. Let Ighalo be rested.

  • Edoman 5 months ago

Ighalo, Ighalo and Ighalo bribed his way to be here. Ighalo wasn’t in the team based on merit. The corrupt couch used Ighalo to hoodwink the Nigerian people. No Nigerian indigene Couch would have looked at Ighalo twice in any circumstance and pick him to be in as our team sticker. No way. Ladies and gentlemen, if you believe that this stupid couch will win the next match against Iceland on Thursday, l have Ovia Bridge to sell you. No more foreign Manager for the Nigeria National Team after these 3 matches in this World-Cup in Russia.

All our players are doing their best for our country after all they are the same crop of players that beat Cameroun, Zambia and Algeria to qualify, Mikel is still a force to in the team, even at almost 40 Rogger Millar still delivered in a world cup tournament propper, like jay jay has rightly point out our fomatiom should be look into properly for me as proffessionalls they the players be able to adopt to any formations that’s introduced by the coaching staff after all why are they proffessional footballers, and a tactice introduce does not sooths their style of play they should let the coaching crew be aware this while we always have meetings and common understanding in everbody orgarnizations

  • All I want to say is that…..the coach started the game with right players but he played them out of position……in the next game I want to see mikel play deeper like he used to when he was in Chelsea and let Iwobi play the 10 role…..if I am the coach I will play Musa at left wing even though is Cray sometimes….Moses at right wing as usual while Iwobi at 10 role then Mikel at the back of them to be supplying them some passes up front….i want the coach to give Iwobi a free role on the pitch for him to be drifting up and down….i want the information to be 4 3 3 or 3 4 3 or 3 4 1 2……in this 3 4 3….i want him to tell Etobo to support the defence line like a backup defender and also blocking midfielder so that Mikle will have that free access to make some of his passes while Ididi make the block for him When he moves

  • Uchenna O Nwosu 5 months ago

Attack: Bench Ighalo. His play is one dimensional and he easily gives up the ball. Replace him with Iheanacho or Simy depending on the formation.
Midfield: Restore Mikel to defensive midfield because he is not a scoring threat. The defenders retreat from him and make sure our other strikers don’t get the ball. Ndidi and Ogu should pair up with Mikel. Etebo is skillful but we need more height for airballs.
Defence: we need Omeruo in as a sweeper. We can either drop Shehu from right back or Ekong from center back. Ekong is very weak at passing and ball possession. Against Croatia he gave the ball away too many times. We should consider Echiejile, we need solid defending more than overlapping. We have Moses, Musa, and Iwobi to create room.
