Rohr Impressed By Quality, Attitude Of Super Eagles Vs Algeria

By Dare Esan in Constantine:

Gernot Rohr has expressed satisfaction with the performance of his team in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Algeria in a dead rubber World Cup qualifier in Constantine, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Rohr handed debuts to Anthony Nwakaeme and Henry Onyekuru while John Ogu, Oghenekaro Etebo and Ahmed Musa also featured in the draw after a long while.

The German tactician was impressed with the zeal showed by the fringe players and admits that they can stake a claim for a place in the first team.

“We had six changes since the last game and some earned those first caps and they did well. We had quality and the same attitude,” Rohr told Completesportsnigeria.com in Constantine.

“Everybody worked well, they lost the ball and the tried to get it back. They did well which means that the building is starting now and some things are changing. We have the same attitude.

“The game showed us that we have players who can play in different positions. We were searching to find new players and we found good new players but we must wait and the return of some injured players.

“Some of these players have shown that they can come in with the first team. We saw good competition for some players in some positions.”

The draw meant the Super Eagles qualified for the Russia 2018 World Cup without losing a match in a tough qualifying group.

    Great job John Ogu.
What a remarkable performance and a memorable goal by John Ogu. I guess this was one of John Ogu’s simplest goals because he’s famed for scoring such long range strike, the last time we witnessed such a stunner was in a friendly tie by the same Ogu, so this is not John Ogu first strike for Eagles goal against Mexico 31st May 2013 in a strike similar to the Algeria wonder strike. His goal reminds Nigeria of Oliseh and JJ Okocha long range strikes.

Given Ogu quality and his goal scoring ability, one still wonders why such a player was left out of Eagles squad at the last world cup. Ogu has sacrificed so much for Nigeria in the past.
I remembered back in 2013 and 2014 when he’d to defy club manager’s instructions to honour Nat team invitation and despite a telling performance in the Confederation cup, a dress rehearsal for the world cup Coach Stephen Keshi of blessed memory did not find him worthy to make the world cup party, he was sacrificed for ineffectual Ramon Azeez, Reuben Gabriel, whose inclusions were secured to balance the ethnic make up of the team, rather unfortunate but hope it does not happen under the watch of Rohr. Besides, John Ogu international game is long overdue.

I hope he’s injury free and keeps his form.

John Ogu has waited for this opportunity for a longtime after sensationally being dropped from the WC team of 2014. Ogu has quality; he is strong, skillful & tireless, typical of a traditional African midfielder. He needs to stay off injury and remain consistent to be in good position to lay claim on a starting shirt. Against Argentina, he has another chance to prove that he deserves a first team shirt. Good luck to him.

Very impatient keeper. Hurries towards ball without accurate judgement, very fatal error especially in a word cup.
