Rohr Keeps World Cup Slots Open For Enyeama, Akpeyi; Monitors Uzoho

By David Meshioye: Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has stated that the goalkeeping slots in the World Cup squad are still up for grabs contrary to rumours doing the rounds that he may have made up his mind on the three goalkeepers for Russia 2018, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

In a chat with Completesportsnigeria.com on Thursday, Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye disclosed that the former Gabon manager is leaving his options open in the goalkeeping areas of the team, adding that the likes of Vincent Enyeama, Francis Uzoho, Daniel Akpeyi, Dele Alampasu and Ikechukwu Ezenwa will have to fight for the three slots.

Enyeama, who is retired from international football, only recently recovered from a long-term injury and has been inactive for several months, while Akpeyi has not been impressive in his recent Super Eagles outings. Youngster Uzoho is no longer a part of the Deportivo La Coruna first-team squad despite impressing while standing in for injured senior keepers in LaLiga games.

“I can confidently tell you that Rohr has not made up his mind on his best three goalkeepers that will be going to the World Cup. He said Enyeama, Ezenwa, Uzoho and of course Akpeyi will have a chance to get the three slots allotted to the goalkeepers,” Ibitoye told CSN.

“He said he is leaving his options open in a bid to get the best from the goalkeepers. That is where the international friendly matches come in; Rohr will be looking at the players closely and those matches will play a huge role in determining who goes to the World Cup.”

Meanwhile, Ibitoye revealed further that Rohr is eagerly looking forward to goalkeeper trainer Enrico Pionetti’s report on his visit to Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho. The backroom staff is expected to brainstorm on Pionetti’s report before Nigeria’s friendly match against Poland.

  • Akpeyi is good but needs just psychological encouragement. Give him more chances to prove himself.after all he is not doing badly in South Africa

Akpeyi has been jittery, he rarely organise his defenders. His ball handling looks suspicious. Big stage fright is his biggest problem!. If Enyema should come back, he will walk straight to the post. Ezenwa has done enough to merit a spot. Uzoho looks a good modern day keeper. Very confident, good on the ball, he commands his area. But let’s don’t judge him with only one match. Rohr should assess him more with game times during the friendlies. Then Ajiboye and Alampasu should battle for the last spot.

Pls lets give our experience coach time 2 study who is d best 4 us

    • Why will you compare PSL with the world cup? Akpeyi is not even worth to be our third choice goalkeeper. He has always committed similar errors whenever he’s given the gear which most times lead to goals against our team. He’s good for the PSL but not for the super eagles. Sebastine, Nwokolor, Ajiboye, Uzoho, Alampasu, Ezenwa are viable choices.

  • I think we should cast our dragnet wider in our search for a good goalkeeper to mount the post for the Super Eagles. Sebastian Osigwe is doing very well for F.C Kriens of Switzerland. He is the first choice goalkeeper for his club and mounts the goal week on week.He has equally shown the desire to be given an opportunity to fight for a shirt in the Super Eagles. Then there is also David Nwolokor who plays his club football in Serbia. He is massively gifted and often referred to as the Nigerian Buffon. There are others that could be unearthed as well, if only we dig deep.

    • Well spoken @Akin,this is the problems we have in Nigeria they only focus on the names they know but forgotten there re alots of talented Nigeria goalkeepers scatter all over Minor European league’s and even which to get a choice to showcase the stuff they made off…

If Enyeama should come back against his wish it may spell doom for Nigeria – “You can force a horse to the stream but you cannot force the horse to drink water.
I was reading an article about “10 Nigerian Players who flopped at the World Cup” – At France 1998 Peter Rufai committed some blunders and at Japan/Korea 2002 Ike Shot in my did similar mistakes that cost Nigeria greatly .

Please if bringing Enyeama will be problematic to the team then the coaches should make do with what they have because ” A bird at hand is better than 99 in the forest “. Sebastian Osigwe in Switzerland and Maduka Okoye in Germany can be drafted into the team maybe they can bring in something different in Russia or subsequently .

For me Uzoho,Ezenwa,Alampasu ,Osigwe( Switzerland) and Okoye( Germany ) should justle for the final three slots for Keepers . My opinion is not final but I just want to make common sense .

ERROR – Ike Shorunmu at Japan/Korea 2002 made some goal keeping blunders due to similar issue surrounding Enyeama’ s recall to the team .

I think the coach should work seriously with the Super Eagles goal keeper trainer and also list and buy some advice from comments made by interested Nigerians at least these can give Rhr good option.

i think the coach should focus more on the goalkeeping department as it is our weakest as at now. for me…ezenwa is better as a 2nd choice…he has improved in reflexes and has gained much confidence going into games…his only weakness is being injury prone…uzoho would have been perfect if nt 4 inexperience..good reflexes, command and distribution…ajiboye only weakness in in commanding his area and positioning defenders…alampasu, osigwe and nwokolor though plying trades with lower leagues should be given their chances. those who call back 4 enyeama don’t knw the super eagles victories only rest on teamwork and mikel leadership qualities.Though Enyeama has been a legend, his inclusion will trigger ‘superiority fights’ and besides he is nt in form. That Akpeyi with due respect has been given his chances…he flopped in all..the games against s.africa, algeria and argentina. mahrez and banega goals were just fustrating. even the defenders seemingly has lost trust in him..

    Attn: Coach Gernot Roth,
    Austin Ejide is your MAN.
The SE Coach has been excellent so far in selection of outfield players and nobody can fault your choice as the Manager.
However, the Goalkeeping area is where it seems Nigerians unanimously would resist you.
You hold the ambition to get a good outing as we all desire, but we understand the tradition, culture & psychology of our people better.
Please Coach leave out Apkeyi & Enyeama from your World Cup experiment for God sake.
Akpeyi has failed ur test repeatedly, and we don’t need a seer to know he isn’t good enough player for Russia. Not Apkeyi again!
Enyeama is not cracked up for it, we have had repeated history of blunders from Keepers recalled to man post for Nigeria at big stages. All failed. Enyeama’s case won’t be different. Nigerians won’t forgive you if history repeats itself with Enyeama.
However, Austin Ejide is probably your joker and the dream keeper if motivated.
He plays in Israel and has all the experience you need. He is agile, strong, daring, hungry & excellent on one-on-one. He organises defenses very well & a penalty stoper.
He only left SE haven served as assistant to Enyeama for several years without the chance to be No 1. He left SE more out of frustration & Nigerians kno this.
So, its Ejide, Uzoho & others.
    Good luck..
