Rohr: Super Eagles Must Attack Argentina, We Can’t Play For Draw

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has declared that the team must be on the attack against Argentina in their Russia 2018 World Cup Group D clash in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday and take the chances in a bid to reach the round of 16.

The Super Eagles are second in the group with three points, while Argentina are bottom with one. A win for Nigeria guarantees passage into the knockout rounds while a draw will be enough if Iceland fail to beat already qualified Croatia.

“Simply put, we must take even half chances, and be on the offensive as much as possible,” Rohr is quoted in a Nigeria Football Federation press release on Sunday.

“Perhaps, a draw could be good to qualify, but we cannot think and play for a draw. Sometimes, when you play for a draw, you get punched in the face late in the day.

“It will be a tough game and we must go with a tough mentality from the start to the end.”

Akwa The Eagles returned to their Sanatorium Istochnik Hotel base in Essentuki on Saturday having no illusions that Tuesday’s match will be easy.
In the evening, they watched reigning world champions Germany come from behind to defeat Sweden with a last-gasp winner in added time.

The Super Eagles have never defeated Argentina at the FIFA World Cup, although they beat the South Americans in a friendly in Russia last November. In five previous appearances, the Eagles have faced Argentina in the group phase on four occasions, all ending in defeats.

I see a repeat of Atlanta 96 on Tuesday at St. Petersburg, an end-to-end attacking football, where Nigeria comes top with a 3-2 or 4-2 scoreline. We should fly out of the block from the word go, show no respect to Messi and his men. At least, we have men who can score. And to add sugar to our tea, Argentina possesses the most shambolic defence in that group. Our greatest challenge could be from the wings, where Pavon/Banega and Di Maria could pose a threat from with their speed and skill and of course Messi, who is the prime mover of the team. If we cut his supply channel and deny Aguero of having the ball, our problem is 50% solved. Both players are only dangerous with the ball on their feet. If they don’t have that luxury, we could be asking if they were on the pitch at all. Prediction: 3-2 to Nigeria.

I hope we won’t be playing against FIFA and its Referees as well because they obviously don’t want their Messi god out of the tournament yet. Watch out for Referees making calls on every slight contact with their god Messi.

The Argentine camp is in complete chaos. The players have ousted Sampaoli in a players revolt. The players have decided to pick the team but who gets to play depends on which camp you belong to. Mascherano and Pavon came to blows in their dressing room after the Croatia match. So if Mascherano were to pick the team, then Pavon won’t play.

officiating will be fair, my only concern on tuesday is dat super eagles must try not to concede late goal like Egypt did in their first match against Uruguay. Our defence must b alert and never say its over till they hear d final whistle. As long as its Nigeria they are playing, Argentina would like to rise to d ocassion, bt Nigeria wt an alert defence, we will beat them. Up super eagles
