Rohr Wants Mikel To Continue As Eagles Captain; Shifts Focus To 2019 AFCON Qualifiers

Coach of the Super Eagles Gernot Rohr has made a passionate appeal to team captain John Mikel Obi not to end his international career just yet but to help the team reach the next AFCON in 2019 which is now the target after the elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Mikel had said he was considering retiring from the team after 12 years although he’s not reached a definite conclusion over the issue but Rohr claims the influence of the player on his teammates is one of the reasons why he’s enjoyed working with the Super Eagles in his two years in charge.

“This group (of players) is very disciplined. We never have any problems and I have our captain to thank for that. He has made it easy for me to coach this team and I hope he stays on with us into the AFCON,” the German told a press conference on Tuesday in St. Petersburg, Russia moments after the Super Eagles were eliminated from the World Cup.

Rohr also said with the team’s ouster, the next target will be the 2019 African Nations Cup qualifiers which resumes in September.

He said: “We have the AFCON to start preparing for and I hope that we’ll do very well in this competition. Nigeria must not only qualify, we must also do very well in Cameroon.”

Nigeria have missed the last two editions of AFCON having failed to qualify since winning the 2013 edition in South Africa.

The Super Eagles will face Seychelles on September 7 before playing Libya at home on October 10. The return leg is three days later on the 13th. The last game for the year will be away to South Africa on November 6th before the qualifiers go on recess till march 2019.

Nigeria are currently third in Group E after a Matchday 1 2-0 home loss to South Africa.

You still have the effrontery, i mean the audacity to talk about the AFCON 2019 and retaining Mikel as your captain when you are suppose to have shown the EXIT DOOR by now… And by the way who told you that will be able to qualify us for the tournament?????? Mtcheewwwww!!!!!

    • We need him to continue ok

    • Kenny 5 months ago

What else do you want from the coach, which of our players is playing in the big team that most of the Argentina players played for, apart from Senegal which African team performed the the way Super Eagle performed at the world cup. We could not qualify for the last two Afocn and a coach came and qualify us for world cup in group with Algeria and Cameroon the African champion. The should sack him and we begin to struggle to qualify for Afcon again. The coach should continue i beg, we dont have the talent to go far in the world cup yet for now.

    • mikee 5 months ago

You have NFF agents who would attack you in this forum. Don’t listen to them. He should be sacked he has failed and must be shown the door.

    • chiller chilinkz 5 months ago

      you are very funny nwachukwu
see your mouth, what can you do or what have you done for Nigeria. if they sack him can you fit in place for him. if you have nothing to offer quietly keep shut….

    • Germany said in they believe in Joachim Loews the coach . Even after the current champion was imploded out of World Cup. Nwachukwu or what is your name? Football is not run like the way you have posted here. In fact Rohr is is the best for the Super Eagles for now.

  • Djeniko 5 months ago

@Diuto Nwachukwu, I strongly believe you are not a football fan, I mean, a football fan that knows football. If so you would have known the trending news: Gernot Rohr should be retained. I also strongly believe you are not an English student. You would have known the meaning of “effrontery” and “audacity.” In your mind, do you think there is a team in Africa and Asia that can beat the Super Eagles? I personally do not think so. The Super Eagles will be dreaded from now on. The fear factor is back for this Super Eagles!!! Lastly, Gernot Rohr is 65years old. Do you talk to people of that age anyhow? Judging from your second name, your people usually accord respect to people of that age. Maybe things have changed. The Super Eagles just needs a little tweak and we will be ready to go. Retaining Mikel Obi as the captain is a good idea but he should not be forced. Leon Balogun and Troost Ekong are good replacement. They are born leaders and exemplary.

  • i think we have begin to have people thinking right in this country, duito nwanchuku is just angry we lost, so many better football playing countries lost also. the eagles played the best they could, l dont understand what you want.
We have a team now that if left alone can be very strong in 4 years time with few inclusions.
People like you are the problem that we have, throw the bathing basin and the baby away type. calm down the ball was not kept there for only nigeria to pick.

  • Now! You people are speaking my language

At ds junction i solely disagree wt GR on d continue stay of mikel. He shud retire now along wt Ighalo. GR shud build around younger players and local players. We need gud legs 2play d no.10 role for us and no.8 role d likes of Iwobi, Etebo, K. Nwakali even Ajagun and Sokari have 2com in if d likes of mikel ar around wen we ds guyz muscled up for future games. So players in our current national team have 2b led go dats d main reason of re-building until u get d proper shape u want. As for d issue of captaincy i tink we shud copy d selecao style now been used by coach Tite by rotating d captain hand band among d players let d coach b d captain is ur team u call d shots, u dtermin who start or not, who gets a call up or nt, who gets invited or nt, dat wil help push away ds continuous problem of am d captain u must b loyal to me and or dat dats nonesnse!!!

Our coach will be 69 years old by the next World Cup in 2022.

I was one of his best supporters b4 and during the World Cup. But I am now of the opinion that his time is up.

I vowed to sink or swim with him and his team (I even supported him for selecting the much disliked Ighalo). I sunk with them, but now I want us to float again.

He did well for us. We had a slim chance to qualify for this mundial, but He led us to beat Cameroon and co.

But that is in the past, and we are now looking to the future.

Thank u once again Mr. Rohr, but we need a younger, yet more experienced coach with passion and hunger to lead our darling Super Eagles to the next level.

The good has to go for the best to come.

At this point I no longer care when some uncultured readers in this forum use abusive words on people with different opinion. I have boldly stated what I believe is the way forward. Only time will tell if my opinion was sound or not.

Over to you Mr. Pinnick and the NFF big wigs.

I am still angry with  Gernot Rohr because of his inaction in the last 10 minutes of our match vs Argentina but i am not in support of him being sacked. At Algiers 1990, Super Eagles lost 5-1 to Algeria and all manner of things were said and written about Clemens Westerhorf. However, four years later, same team rose to no. 5 on the FIFA ranking. However, should he fail at AFCON, he should be shown the exit door.

Rohr is average coach.SE have been playing defensive football because of his 3 5 2 formation. Having only 3 defenders at back made our defence weak. The Argentine second goal occurred because of SE had no leftful back. Ogbuehi turned around the game against Iceland yet he benched him and played Idowu who could not defend or support the attack. Most teams played 4 defenders including Argentina. His selection in the attack was poor because a good coach must feature our most creative player Iwobi. It is only a retarded coach that will play Ighalo because he cannot score goals. As per Nations cup, It will be hard. South Africa exploited the 3 5 2 formation and beat us at our backyard. He tried but SE need a change.

  • @ Issac I feel you bro
Wellcome Super Eagle & our Able Captain its not over yet for you Mikel in Super Eagle Shirt, you have all done well in respective of the fact that you couldn’t get to the round of 16 which is a minus on our record painfully so with a white Messiah Coach by Amaju Pinick . My observation is this , We have a Very Good and Strong Team that can beat any team but lacks a potent Coach to bring out the best in them & am afraid it seems Amaju pinnick is hellbent on retaining him despite his tactical ineptitude to the point that he has flimsy excuses for every tactical errors that dumped us out of this world cup.My question to NFF is does retaining Garnot Rohr a guarantee to winning the world cup that no country has ever won with a foreign Coach till date? Garnot Rohr is a misfit for our type of football and motivation for our player’s because I see the Fear Factor usually overwhelmed our opponents when facing us coming back but not with this Coach continuing. Our local Coaches in the mould of Daniel Amokachi,Emmanuel Amuneke,Samson sisia & Sunday Oliseh with the same motivation given to Garnot Rohr will position Super Eagle for Glory at the mundial in 2022. Thanks

We appreciate you.
I can vividly remember when late Stephen Keshi was coach many fans insulted him, that game Nigeria played against Cot`d voire, before the match i have a call on a live show in London, players were listening,I only have my candid opinion,it was to encourage them, they won the afcon. I won’t forget that day. If coach wants Mikel so be it,let’s stop this altitude of sacking and starting afresh,Thank You Super Eagles,Thank You Mr Amaju. Let’s stay with this team. Thank You.

Well done football loving Nigerians. Continuity in the right direction is the secret of future success in SE. Can Nigeria afford to sign any one of these coaches :Zidane, Jose Mou, Trappatoni, Diego Simone and the likes then Gernot Rohr should be sacked but if Nigeria could not afford any of the aforementioned coaches Rohr should be left alone for continuity as SE coach. No coach in the class of Rohr could perform more than he did. He took SE from the scratch to turn around the team fortune, hence we’re talking about relieving him of the job while AFCON qualifiers are around the corner. Are we to start afresh with the new local coaches who are full of sentiments, technical Ineptitude, rebate, indiscipline etc. Enyeama was not supposed to leave when he left SE,Troost Ekong summoned courage to continue with SE when Olishe tagged his likes with oyinbo soft kind of game. This was unfair from a local coach. We should support Rohr and Mikel to bring successes to the Team. Few fresh legs are needed to complement the team. God bless Nigeria.

  • continuity to me is another doom in waiting, yes we can continue with this set of young and talented lads but obviously not with a clueless and old enough for retirement coach like ROGH. Rogh is 65 and by next world cup we would be having another buhari as a coach and i hope and pray he will not be forgotting his players name by then due to old age.
RORH should be head of scout and not as a coach because he lacks the technicality just like our local coaches. After two years of managing the SE i say that RORH dosent know our starting 11 and he does not know the full potential of our players as well.
We lost out because of him. we all know the influence ebuehi brings to the SE attack we all saw it in our come back against argentina in rusia 4:2 we saw it agaist England that his introduction gave the attack an added option and his introduction forced the English team to change arshley young for danny rose, we saw it against Iceland even when he played out of his position he gave musa options to make runs. That been said of ebuehi.
In a game against Argentina a sound coach should have changed at least a player in the late 70th minutes in that game to to reduce the pressure on our players for some few seconds the boys would have gained some bit of composure. He should have also bring in a left option since that is where the Argentina as chosen to play from he should have also remove a tired mikel who for a long while as never played for full 90 min or etebo and use either ndidi/etebo or indidi/mikel to block on which one he chooces to remove and bring in a livlier and creative iwobi who can run within the space and also create an option for our darling rocket musa, with this we would av stolen the stage in rusia. Am not a coach just but i think he should av been able to work out a 2+2 that can work he should have taken a risk instead trying to play not to be faulted. Please tell me if am wrong and futher convince me on why we should stick to him mr RORH of the blessed achievement but above all God bless nigeria and SE.

I like most of what you have said. Mikel was glaringly tired,he left him there. Why not change early? I’m bemused.Inshort let me quite me from somewhere:
      “Edited 1st msg:
@Mr Francis,we know it’s a young side much like England who incidentally play a similar formation but with a different application.Ofcourse,u know Coach Southgate won’t allow fatigue to undermine his team,as it happened to our midfield against d Argies. Southgate is ready to change even Henderson,if he is tired.A coach must have such confidence in his bench to be elite.
Now, people have said the truth on Ighalo and Iwobi,be comfortable with that pls.
It doesn’t mean the coach is bad.A good coach can goof and truth is,he goofed in Russia on those glaring matters.Nobody said the coach be sacked here.
Like Mr Taribo West said, don’t only play tactics(which is a good thing) also play to the strengths of ur players. That is very instructive going forward.
We grow by learning from mistakes pls. No sentiments, let truth flow.”

Hy guys pls let’s stop d blame game and face the future,GR should continue ,1 afcon qualifiers is around d corner he should be accessed properly after d 2019 afcon, remember guys we have two afcons competitors b4 d worldcup 4sure we will qualify n if this team is kept together I can only vision better days ahead,d Morocco team some guys here r praising played afcon before d World Cup n yet de didn’t win a single match n our darling super eagles played there 1st major completion since 2014 with new sets of players n a sound coach in his own class n some guys r here criticizing  d team ahhh make then kill themselves before u show them love?
Part of d blame should go to us d fans we criticized d coach for mikel agus inclusion, but ve realized one thing every coach has a player dat does d dirty jobs for him n that is what mikel agh is to GR,he might not be a ball juggler or classic passer but he gets d job done, wenever GR wants to keep d score line he brings him in eg Cameroon Zambia Congo matches etc believe me if he was dere he wouldn’t ve left rojo unmarked for that goal, all we need do is to encourage GR n d team scout for players that will better d team @ d moment we don’t ve a good 3,11,9, for our first eleven let’s do d scouting guys

Edoman, I with u all day, Rohr should be kidnap, they should subject him to serious abuse and torture. As for Ighalo we coming for u.Mikel, Ihanacho, Ighalo, Onazi, Joel, Ogu, Echiejile, Ezenwa, all these should pls stay away from super eagles. I ve said it many times Iheanacho is DOA.

    • Dr. Drey 5 months ago

Oya go and kidnap him na. What are you waiting for..? or why are you waiting for someone else to do the job. And when U have finished that, kindly go and pack all your village people and put in the SE.

    My view
I raise the motion to drop the following players as quickly as possible.
    1. Akpeyi
    2. Echiejele
    3. Joel obi
    4. Onazi
    5. Awiezim
    6. Ighalo
    7. Iheanacho (until he hits a better form)
I believe mikel still plays a very key role in the team, you just don’t do a total change of players or else you will be shooting yourself on the legs.
    Introduce the following players.
    1. Alampasu
    2. Musa Mohammed
    3. Kelechi Nwakali
    4. Ola Aina
    5. Kayode
    6. Junior Ajayi
Although Rohr made us pay for that loss and which can happen to any coach, I believe the technical crew should be accused.. The coach can’t do it all alone. All they do is sit down and collect t salary..
Rohr should continue and be placed on conditions or else he will be sacked..
I see a better SE… At least, they r adjusting well to the 352 formation, and there is enough time to perfect the 433 formation.. Ability to switch formation and play well is also a good team tactics… GO SUPER EAGLES….

    • K baba 5 months ago

ighalo made us pay for the loss let’s be honest. how many chances does a striker need especially in a tournament like world cup. if he brought Ighalo in and he scored and now we are scheduled to face France, you all will be praising him. if you want him out, then what should the Germans do to Low? you think the players themselves haven’t learnt from this experience and will come back with more anger and hunger? Also, Amadu Pinnick also stated that fresher legs will be added to the team including Kayode, Nwakali bros, Musa Muhammed and Sadiq Oumar who just got signed by Steven Gerrard at Rangers. Patience is a virtue, we need to exercise it.

You all talk like you don’t remember that both SiaSia and Oliseh couldn’t qualify us for Afcon and world cup when given chances.

Let’s support this guys and focus on developing other aspects of the country just like it’s being done with football with the u15s doing well at the moment. so we can have many sports and various developments to bring happiness and employment for Nigerian youths.

Imagine if every leader in Nigeria puts discipline into what they do and continuity, the country will be better in all aspects, not just football.

    @ Sir Sanya
Bro, you are apt with your analysis. Rohr’s inaction cost us that game. We had the game firmly under our control, we were soaking up lost of pressure from the argies, even though thy were having all of the possesion, they never threatened or goal keeper in the 2nd half. Infact, i didnt realize Aguero was on the pitch until i saw him jubiliting with rojo and the rest of his colleagues. That was how much we made them labour in vain that night. An extra defender and an extra midfielder was needed at least from the 75th minute of that match. On the basis of that, Rorh deserves to go. But i’ll like to refer you to Sir Adeyinka’s comment above….if we kick out rohr now, we will simply be throwing the baby away with the bath water. All the mistakes he has made and the lessons he has learn, all the background details and resources he has gathered before, during and after this tournament will be thrown away with him. Dem say 1st fool nor be fool…na 2nd fool naim be the real fool. Why not let this man learn from his mistakes from this tournament and come back to rectify them in preparedness to the next challenge ahead which is the AFCON qualifiers resuming in September. If he now repeats the same mistakes, then he can be booted out. If he’s acked now, we definitely cannot get any “world class” coach in the mould of those that Adeyinka highlighted above. We are more likely to get a same grade or even lower grade coach than him, who most probably will not have as mcuh experience as rohr has gathered in his last 2 years with the team, and then that one too will now use us to learn and gather experience all over again. That is how we have been going round in circles since 2002. It is even worse with local coaches. They will turn themselves to agents immediately. collecting bribes here and there and selling slots in the national team all in the name of building a “home based Super eagles”. They will immediately do away with the core of the previous team and start inviting players who were not in anyway better than the ones that were in the team previously all in the name of “re-building”. Even our so-called ‘guardiola of africa” brought us one sylvester igoboun, daniel uzochukwu et al during his tenure (simply bcos they were managed by his elder brother). And this is where I give it to Rohr, though im not saying he’s immune to this syndrome, but for the first time in a long while, there’s no Nigerian player who is playing well in Europe that he hasnt invited to the SE at least once.
So lets just allow him to keep shepherding the team, but he should be given deliverables, targets which he must attain, if he wants to continue till 2022 as he keeps saying. We are already adjusting to the 3-5-2 which is a very solid one imho. we just need some cheerleaders in the team like Akpeyi, Echiejile, Onazi and co who are not improving to step aside for younger and more exciting players like the Nwakalis, Musa and Usman Muhammed, Alampasu, Awoniyi, Umar Sadiq and Henry Onyekuru to Stake their claims for a place in the team.

  • Alexander Ochega 5 months ago

God bless you mr Adebambo Sanya!, your analysis is d best, you spoke d mind of d average supereagle fan… Rohr killed us in d last game against Nigeria!, his changes did not reflect a sense of urgency n patroitism. I believe Igalo’s days in d SE are over, but it was not his fault we lost that game, he had shown enough weakness for even a dumb coach to know he can’t deliver when needed. Iwobi was introduced at a time that only shows Rohr brought him in only in preparation for his(Rohr) defence incase Nigerians question d reason he benched such a talent in a crucial game like that. This present SE team is very good, however, we need a coach who is not only good but VERY PATROITIC!!!.

  • isaac 5 months ago

I have followed Rohr coaching profile as coach of Niger, Burkina faso and Etoile de Sahel. His highest percentage match wins is 51%.He has never won any tournament as a coach because of his bad tactics Our preparation for this world cup was solid, non payment of his salary, non payment of players allowances and pre world cup friendly matches were not issues. Yet SE could not go beyond Ist round under Rohr. late Keshi despite all the problems won the nation cup and took us to the second round. Rohr does not know the potential of our players. it is only dumb coach that will get a win with the inclusion of Ebuehi against Iceland and keep him on the bench for Idowu who is clueless. No good coach will keep iwobi on the bench. Let me clear Rohr can never win the nations cup because of his tactics

  • Mr vick 5 months ago

Before we kill and kidnap rohr lets ask ourselves what target the nff gave rohr in his contract, rohr was given the target of qualifying our team for the world cup which he did. Then for the match against the argies rohr did his best but it was not enough but i know fully well that rohr did not tell ighalo to miss those two clear cut chances he got against the argies and for those of us saying rohr will be 69 years by 2022 i will refer you to a certain oscar tabarez of uruguay who have been there head coach for more than 10years, thats continuity and i think we need it in our coaching crew, in the nff board and in our super eagles team, just some little changes in personnel and our team will be performing better in 2022, with the vast developing happening in our football with an u13, u15 providing great hope for us.
