Rohr: Why Super Eagles Will Play Better Against England

Rohr: Why Super Eagles Will Play Better Against England

By Kayode Ogundare:

Coach of the Super Eagles Gernot Rohr has backed his players to perform well in Saturday’s friendly international against England and advanced reasons why Nigeria will do better against the Three Lions, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The German coach said: “The game against England will be a totally different game from the one against Congo DR. First, we will be playing at the Wembley Stadium which has one of the best pitches for football. Secondly, we expect to have our captain Mikel Obi, Odion Ighalo and, hopefully, Wilfred Ndidi, back for the game. So we can really play as offensively as we always want to play. It will be a good match, I’m sure.”

Rorh also praised Italy-based Simy Nwankwo who made his debut in Monday evening’s 1-1 draw against Congo in Port Harcourt and who now appears a sure bet for the World Cup-bound team.

“Simy Nwankwo did very well against Congo. I like his game and he gives us a lot of options in attack. He will strenghten this team offensively and that’s good for us. We will see him again at Wembley,” Rohr added.

The Super Eagles are billed to move to Austria after the game against England where they are scheduled to play the Czech Republic on June 6 as they continue the build-up to their sixth World Cup appearance.

Nigeria will take on Croatia on June 16, Iceland on June 22 before facing Argentina on June 26 for a place in the Round of 16 stage of the competition.

It’s a certainly that Simon Moses will not make the final 23. Both MRI conducted in PH and Abuja confirmed he’ll be out for up to four weeks. The final scan that will be done in London is just to confirm the previous results. Ola Aina too is just in the team as a stand by leaving just one more player to be dropped. One of Ogu and Agu is most likely to get the chop depending on the fitness level of the other midfielders. Those already out baring any last minute changes are Aina and Simon. One more will be dropped before the final 23 will be announced on June 4

    • @ Ayphilydegreat. This looks apt. But, one wonders why omerou and echedile will remain in that team when the likes of Aina and Ogu may be homebound… Tough luck

    • John etuk 6 months ago

my brother echijele and agu will leave that team…..ola played 47 games last season and did very well…..echijele played only 10 games all season….did you not watch echijele awful performance…..ola that we have not used in his traditional right back position but he his still doing well…..rohr said he will take 2 fullbacks…..shehu will be deputize by ebuehi….idowu will be deputized by ola

      • Paschal 6 months ago

I think they are only taking Echiejile to the world cup cos hes an old member. After Russia he sure will never be invited again.

I will like to see Ebuehi and Ogu playing against England. Ogu did well in the last games he started for Nigeria against Algeria and Argentina, and even when he came up for injured Onazi against Senegal in a friendly. It doesn’t sound so fair that he has been coming from the bench since those games. He should be starting games for the SE ahead of Onazi

    • Greenturf 6 months ago

Yeah Ogu should be starting matches.Apparently he has never had a bad game for Nigeria and has demonstrated high work ethics and professionalism towards the Nigerian course.
His greatest undoing is playing his football in Israel and this alone has taken him behind the pecking order against less talented players who plays in a better league.
Meanwhile our coaches should face reality in the face of terrible performances in our midfield and feature Ogu on regular basis alongside Ndidi and Mikel eagles would thrive with this players.
On the other hand, Abdulahi Shehu should be taking the place of any of this trio (midfielders)should they need replacing thereby moving him from the right back with Ebuehi coming in his place on the right back.Honestly I don’t trust other midfielders in the team. They have dropped in form drastically and are an eyesore to watch.
I hope this team would peak at the right time when they are most needed.Performances in friendlies lately has been abysmal and is high time they upped there game otherwise early return is looming.

      • Ayphillydegreat 6 months ago

Greenturf. I agree with you for the most part. Ogu was good against Algeria and Argentina, but he was a tad slow for my liking. Mikel is not the fastest midfielder, Ndidi is also not very fast, but they both make up for their lack of speed with incredible reading of the game and calculative markings. If we have Ogu, Ndidi, and Mikel in the Midfield we will struggle for pace. If Argentina had Messi in November we will be 4 goals down before we wake up.

IMHO Mikel, Ndidi and Obi will be the ideal trio to start at the Mundial. I took a lot of respite from that friendly with Poland. The combo of Ndidi and Obi in that game brought steel to our midfield. That to me should be SuperEagles first 11 going to the WorldCup. Just Add Mikel and take off one of Iheanacho and Ighalo or bench them both and bring in Nwankwo to spearhead the attack with Moses and Iwobi dovetailing between the wings and midfield.

Watch out for my SuperEagles on Saturday. Everyone will see football made in Wembley. We may lose the encounter, but that is the game that will speak the truth. The coach has hinted that Mikel, Moses, Ighalo and possibly Ndidi will be available for the game. This is the match that will showcase our possible first 11 against Croatia. Uzoho, Balogun, Ekong, Shehu, Idowu, Mikel, Ndidi, Obi, Moses, Iwobi, Ighalo. It is heartwarming that we can at least name most of our first 11 nowadays. Bringing back memories of the glory days. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

Appillygrreat sir, I often comes here to read your comments because of your good understanding of football. You have really spoken my mind sir

        • Greenturf 6 months ago

I disagree with you Aphilly.Joel Obi has yet to impress under rohr’s stewardship.Infant he has been a shadow of himself lately in eagles colours.
However, I saw the Poland game and had to switch off my telly as I saw enough. In that game the midfield struggled and was lethargic by all standards.Poland dictated play and we only survived by share grit and luck.Joel Obi in that game was below average.
Perhaps you are basing your argument on club ground as Joel play in an elite European league compared to Ogu’s.I can understand that but what matters now is not the club a player features but performances as only that we need to have a successful tournament.

          • Ayphillydegreat 6 months ago

@Greenturf. I’ll rather have a player that plays in a top 5 league than a player from the Isreali league. Instead why can’t we just sink and endure some growing pains with the promising Kelechi Nwakali. However, this is Nigeria, I will support anyone who eventually makes Rohr’s 23 man list.

  • I applaud the NFF for setting up this England friendly so close to the world cup as it has the potential of serving as a true test of key departments of the team going to the world cup.

Coach Rohr highlights the Super Eagles’ attacking approach above but I will be more interested in how the defence withstand the pace, power and poise of Vardy, Kane and Sterling (who has made headlines for non-football related matters recently)

I will hope he continues Uzoho’s development by putting him in goal. I pray the strokes of luck that, saw goals he conceded against Poland and Serbia which were wrogly disallowed and the penalty he conceded against Congo which was wrongly overlooked, continues.

The young man is impressive, imposing and skillful.

Our defence will by my focal point on Saturday.

Good luck Super Eagles; we love you.

  •  England 2 vs nigeria 3 . England scoring through  offside  .and penapenalty.

    • @Olu You’re so sure of how the goals would come. Are you a soothsayer? Can you gaze into your crystal and tell me the outcome of the game against Croatia? I’m having sleepless nights.

  • Emma Ehi. 6 months ago

England’s home game against Nigeria this Saturday will end in a score draw. The match will be very interesting.

l have already told the world the results of the World Cup group D matches. l would like to re-state the results here, once again :

    Croatia 1 – Nigeria 2
    Iceland 0 – Nigeria 2
    Argentina 1 – Nigeria 1

The last match involving Argentina/Nigeria will be electric, as both teams will produce “all the arsenal at their disposal and will fire from all cylinders! This match
is going to be the final before the final and nobody should miss that match – even unborn children in their mothers’ womb should come out, watch the match and then return to their mothers’ womb.

In the end of this extraordinary encounter if complete football, both Argentine and Nigeria will advance to the next stage and Nigeria will go on wallop their next opponent in the next round –

See you then for the scores…

      Bravo!
Nigeria will spring surprise us at the world cup in terms of their play and not results.
This team true potential will be at the 2022 world cup. whatever the accomplishment it is an affront or pedestal to having Super Eagles dominate Africa football cum football world again in 2 years time.
Wish the Super Eagle the best in teems of luck and performances.

I will start taking u serious after the first match

    • tonibekwe 6 months ago

The unborn babies may not have to come out to watch here bcos DSTV has already concluded plans to beam the matches live to them there. So I heard. Do not say I told you, but say you heard it.

  • Rohr should drop Ola aina, Mikel Agu and Joel Obi. Mikel Agu and Joel have not impressed me in Super Eagles shirt recently. He has 2 defensive midfielders already, Onazi and Ndidi. Mikel Obi, Etebo and Ogu can also play defensive in contigency situations and Etebo and Alex can play 10 role. Let our attack be full of stars and players that can make difference. We need Moses Simon in that team. I pray he is fit before the world cup start. He is better than Musa, Iwobi, Etebo in that Left flank. He also dribbles better and go pass defenders better.

    • Ola aina is the best rightful back we have in that team remember he’s in the championship team of the previous season rohr only deployed him to the left back because of echejile I bet he’s going the world cup

    • People forget Ola Aina game against argentina but remember DR congo

    • I picked Ola Aina because I think he has made up his mind to drop him initially. I believe he is still in the team because of Tyrone’s injury. Left to me, I would have dropped Echiejile or Awaziem.

Kingmaker its been awhile I read your write up… Hope you are faring well.

Nwaebonyi, I don’t want us run faster than our shadows. After we have crossed over and the world aeeing my “crystal ball predictions” coming true, l will then predict the results of our next games till the quarter finals – because these Eagles will cross over…

  • Some players are as sure as daylight to make the squad to Russia whilst other have one or two things to prove.

The competition for places will be fierce and the players below will need to convince fans that either they have what it takes to make the final 23 or if they make the final 23, they can be a real asset to the team and provide added quality as starters or as substitutes:

Daniel Akpeyi: Having lost his automatic first choice place, Akpeyi will be keen to show that he either has what it takes to reclaim the number one slot or will be on the bench as a more-than-capable automatic replacement to whomever is number 1.

Mikel Agu: The scorer of 2 goals in the Turkish league is yet to impress a section of fans that he has what it takes to cut it at the highest level of football. He may have one more chance to impress against England.

Joel Obi: A shadow of the once pacey, speedy and robust attacking midfielder/winger that we once knew. He has added little to the much-required creativity that the Super Eagles midfield so desperately needs at this time. Other elements that he currently possess are in abundant supply in the current Super Eagles squad so it is hard to see what quality he provides.

Ogenyi Onazi: Does he still possess the technical abilities of a top class midfielder at the world stage?

Simmy Nwankwo: Will he prove to be a flash in the pan or a revelation?

Frances Uzoho: Mistakes have largely gone unpunished (e.g. disallowed goals against Poland and Serbia and penalty not issued to Congo). Will mother luck continue to shine on him? Will the coach choose the make the world cup a developmental platform for Uzoho?

Moses Simon, Tyrone Ebuehi: Battling fitness issues.

  • PETER PIERRE 6 months ago

D coach will feature his majors……… The very first choice against England because he would want to test his “favourites” against a strong side like England… Hence Uzoho will be goal keeper, Mikel, Moses, Ighalo will start.
However, against Czech Republic, he might start Simy instead of Ighalo, and Ezenwa instead of Uzoho and some other players that need some final touch of preparation.

The problem I see in dropping echijele, obi and ogu, which the coach mentioned they’re only 3 left footer players in the team and also old experience in echijele. Apart from that, I feel echijele and obi should be drop. Obi has been my man, but his not given the team what I need from him..I wish him well as well. ogu never disappointed us for once, since I know him during the confederation cup. on my opinion, ogu merit to be there. If obi or echijele dropped, for me, no hard feeling. I only wish and hope S.Moses make it to WC. I really need him

No one should talk any negative comments on the goalkeepers vis-a-vis any player at this point of the training. I read a lot of the English sports websites BBC, ESPN, Mirror, Super Sports, I have not read of any negative reports about their teams or reports of any other team. Even the fans say positive things. The gun Tattoo of Sterling was quickly watered down and on Saturday the young man will play against Nigeria.
