Rooney Gets Wenger’s Praise Ahead Derby Cracker

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he believes that the best position of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is up front and told reporters that he has not been surprised by Rooney’s development into a top class player.

Rooney and Manchester United face Arsenal this weekend at the Emirates and in the build-up to the game the Gunners boss told reporters what he feels the United and England captain’s best position is.

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney hails Arsenal squad and praises number of English players at club.

“I personally believe that Wayne Rooney is a centre forward,” the Frenchman said.

“He played in that role [for England against Scotland] on Tuesday night and he did very well.”
Wenger continued by saying that in his opinion Rooney was always destined for big things, having scored against Arsenal as a teenager for Everton in 2002.

“I’m not surprised,” continued Wenger when asked if he was shocked at how Rooney’s career has turned out.

“He scored that goal against David Seaman when he was 16 years of age. That day I came out and said ‘this guy will make an exceptional career’.

“He has all you want from a top-class player. He works hard, is committed, classy and understands the game.

“Because he works so hard, maybe that’s why he played in different positions. I’m not surprised. For me, yes [he is world-class].”

United travel to The Emirates for today’s game, kicking off at 5:30 pm in north London.
