ROUND-UP: Awoniyi, Kalu Score In Belgian Play-Offs; Obi Stars In Torino Win

By James Agberebi:

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, on loan from Liverpool, was on target for Mouscron in their 2-1 home win against 10-man Kortrijk in Group A of the Belgian Europa League qualifying play-offs on Sunday.

Also in action was Abduljeleel Ajagun for Kortrijk who was later replaced in the 66th minute.

Awoniyi scored in the 36th minute to cancel out teammate Teddy Mezague’s own goal on 14 minutes.

Kortrijk were reduced to 10 men following Gary Kagelmacher’s sending off.

And with five minutes remaining Dimitri Mohamed scored from the penalty spot to give Mouscron the win.

Mouscron now top the six-team group on six points from two games.

The goal took Awoniyi’s tally for the season to seven in 27 league games.

In the Belgian Championship play-offs on Sunday, Nigeria forward Samuel Kalu was the hero as his second minute goal secured a hard-fought 1-0 win for Gent against visiting Club Brugge.

Also on parade for Gent were Moses Simon and Anderson Esiti. All three Nigerian players were replaced in the course of the game.

Gent lead the six-team Championship play-offs standings on six points after winning their opening two games.

Club Brugge, Genk and Standard all have three points each after one win and one defeat, with the same number of goals scored (one goal) and goals conceded (one goal conceded).

In Serie A, Super Eagles midfielder Joel Obi played in Torino’s 1-0 home win against his former club Inter Milan.

It was Torino’s third straight Serie A win which left them 10th on 45 points.

Obi was later replaced with two minutes remaining in regulation time.

I hope Gernot Rohr is watching Samuel Kalu and Awoniyi performances in their respective clubs, this guy Kalu, he is so talented, but it’s a pity that he is going to watch the world cup via his TV-SET while the ineffective Musa will be on parade in Russia and while Awoniyi should get the nod ahead of ineffective Ighalo, but these players are going to be absent in Russia.

We need kalu and awoniyi in our next friendly matches.

Musa wll be going to the world cup based on experience, pace and versatility up front.he is not a bad player. Also the fact that Ighalo had off days in the recent friendlies doesn’t make him ineffective,by the way midfield wasn’t creative.thats not to rule out the fact we need a potent back up.

Indeed it’s a pity that (we Nigerian football lovers) may be watching the world cup without the presence of those aforementioned players most especially, Samuel Kalu. I have said it time without no. Samuel Kalu is the REAL DEAL men! That guy na bomb!
With him operating from the right flank while Victor Moses on the other left flank, men forget.
The super eagles will mesmerizes any team in the world cup.
Pls guys just go to YouTube and watch him… Simon moses is not a match to Samuel Kalu I have known in everything in football..
Also, Nigeria should always play iwobi from 10 most especially when Mikel is being respected or not present. I have always agitated for this because that’s his natural wing and I believe he can do more wonders from that position. He played in that position vs Southampton and he have gave two assists. GR you have to studying your players, know which position you can achieve their best impact in the team.

Also, GR should always play iwobi from the 10th position because that’s his natural wing as he has thrived there much more than any other position in his club arsenal. He even played there in their last game against Southampton and gave two assists.

Out of the four Nigeria internationals that played in that match Gent vs Club Brugge, Kalu was by far the best on the night….

I am not a fan of musa, but I can’t say that samuel kalu is better than him untill will see him in the super eagles or in a tougher league, same goes for awoniyi, I won’t lose sleep if they don’t go to the world cup, rohr should start looking for the perfect combination in the midfield from the sqaud we have now, Iwobi shold be tried in the no 10 position, he shouldn’t pair ndidi with onazi or mikel agu, he should play any of the three prefarably ndidi with either john ogu, etebo or joel obi, mikel can be paired with ndidi when Iwobi plays the no 10 role.

Though I am not the coach I totally agree with you. Rohr should try this midfield combination. Ndidi, Mikel and iwobi, with the later as number 10. It will be solid. Victor Moses ighalo and Samuel kalu attackers.

make una no d mention ighalo name here oo,DAT guy go fall we hand for Russia oo. I don talk my own finish!

  • I agree wit u all iwobi is too good at no10 mikel and ndidi shld play bhind him, for kalu he is better than simon who dont want to improved,

A lot of new names (Samuel Kalu, Dressers, Adi, Sadiq, Martins etc) have been flagged of recent for a possible new addition into the current SE. They are good players. But I am sure the coach knows these guys. The coach would have also watched their matches or clips. The coach has reports from his scouts on these guys. Therefore there must be a reason while he hasn’t considered them up till now. Because the coach should be more interested in any new value addition than you and I.

The second question is, considering the fact that we just have one more friendly match in May 28th against DR Congo and immediately after which the final world cup squad list must have been submitted to FIFA. since they are not in the class of Ronaldo or Messi…do they have the exceptional class and time to break into the current SE considering the need for team cohesion, chemistry and imbibing the psychology of the coaches playing pattern.

Again we need to know the mind of the Rohr’s technical crew amidst all these quest for new additions.

I know what Rohr is doing. Baring any unforseen circumstances like injury, the likes of Kalu, Awoniyi, Sadiq, Dessers will make the 35 man provisional squad to fight for shirt.

  • I will take igallo ti Russia. Even if it to watch how goal can be scored from the bench
