Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu was the hero for Hapoel Beer-Sheva as he scored the only goal in their 1-0 home win against Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv in the Israeli Championship play-off clash on Sunday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
The Championship play-off which comprises six teams – Hapoel Beer Sheva, Beitar Jerusalem, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Maccabi Netanya, Hapoel Haifa and Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv – will decide who emerges winners of this season’s league title.
The winners will qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers while the second and third teams will progress into the Europa League qualifiers.
In the game against Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv, Ogu scored in the 31st minute to give Hapoel Beer-Sheva a winning start.
The goal was Ogu’s second after 20 league games this season.
Hapoel Beer-Sheva are top on 60 points, just one point ahead of second-placed Beitar Jerusalem.
Hapoel Beer-Sheva’s next game in the play-offs is at home against Beitar Jerusalem on April 4.
Also on Sunday, Nigerian forward Isaac Success was in action for struggling Malaga who held Celta Vigo to a surprise 0-0 away draw in the Spanish LaLiga.
The draw halted Malaga’s run of seven straight league defeats.
Success’ Nigerian teammate Brown Ideye, who was named in Malaga’s 19- man squad for the game against Celta, did not make the matchday squad.
In the 69th minute, Success was brought off for Keko.
Malaga remain bottom on 14 points in the 20-team league table.
And in the Austrian Bundesliga (top flight), former Akwa United forward Ibrahim Alhassan was introduced on 74 minutes but could not prevent Austria Wien from being thrashed 5-0 by Salzburg.
Alhassan has scored just one goal in 17 league appearances for Austria Wien this season.
