ROUND-UP: Simon Inspires Gent To Beat Anderlecht; Success Starts In Malaga Win, Balogun Benched

By James Agberebi:

Nigerian trio Moses Simon, Anderson Esiti and Samuel Kalu were all in action for Gent who kicked off their Belgian Championship play-offs campaign with a 2-0 away win against Anderlecht on Sunday.

The winner of the play-offs will be crowned league champions and gain qualification to next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Second-half goals from Brecht Dejaegere and Yuya Kubo in the 47th and 86th minutes secured Gent all three points.

Simon was replaced in the 72nd minute while Esiti and Kalu played 90 minutes.

Gent have gone top of the six-team play-off table on three points, usurping Uche Agbo’s Standard Liege who pipped Sporting Charleroi 1-0 on Saturday.

The other two teams in the play-offs are Club Brugge and Genk who will meet on Monday.

In the Spanish LaLiga Santander, Super Eagles forward Isaac Success featured for relegation threatened Malaga who beat visiting Villareal 1-0.

Success was replaced in the 66th minute while his Nigerian teammate Brown Ideye was not in Malaga’s matchday squad for the game.

Gonzalo Castro was the hero as he scored a 37th minute penalty to give Malaga their first league win since December when they beat Real Sociedad 2-0 away.

Before the game against Villareal, Malaga had gone 13 straight league games without a win (10 defeats, three draws).

Malaga remain bottom on 17 points in the league table.

And in the German Bundesliga, Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun was benched for Mainz who were held to a 0-0 home draw by Monchengladbach.

Anthony Ujah was introduced for Mainz in the 90th minute of the game.

The draw means Mainz are winless in their last five league games (three draws, two defeats), are 16th in the relegation play-offs spot on 26 points.

What is happening to Leon Balogun? Why is he not being fielded regularly for his club? Is he off form? HOPE OUR ‘OYIBO WALL’ IS NOT CRACKING?

I’m really glad for Nassarra. Looks like he’s gradually coming back to full fitness and he’s been a regular in recent weeks for Malaga. Like I said SuperEagles problem is not in the Midfield or defense as long as we have Mikel and a fit Balogun. We need an intimidating force in attack. Isaac Success, Kayode Olarenwaju, A fully fit Onyekuru or the lanky Sadiq Umar are players I think can compete with Ighalo for the top strikers position and not forgetting a potential return for Obafemi Martins. Ighalo may not even make the team if all these attackers are in camp. We need strikers that will chase every lost cause, be a nuisance for the opposition and bring his teammates to play. Not by just hanging around the opponent box expecting a free ball to tap in. A Suarez like kinda striker, a striker in the mold of the great Rashidi Yekini. That’s what I think is still missing in the present SuperEagles.

So success and kayode should be in the mix now because they tasted action this weekend? Lol. Success is a massive talent who could manage his rise to stardom which affected his progression. Getting playing time in malaga will help him regain his form but he needs to do something perform incredibly well in the la liga to get a look again from rohr. Sadiq been called up will be a welcomed development. He has been massive in the eirdivisie since moving to NAC breda in january. Watched him against psv on saturday and he was very impressive.

Success and Kayode have already been part of the team. If they’re doing well and playing regular they have a chance to be called to camp. I’ve been calling for Sadiq Umar long time ago, but it all depends on who and what the coaches want in the team.

Coach Rohr should be told to invite kingsley sokari who plays in Tunisia. He is deadly and creative midfield player not like all our present combative midfielders. Based on fitness these players below are deserving invitation with intents to solve problematic positions. Ejide, Sadiq umar, obagoal martins, ideye, Cyriel desser, Ajayi and sokari Kingsley. Remember Efe Ambrose because our defence to be compacted and a no nonsense type of approach

If sokari is as good as you claim here why isnt he in europe yet? French scouts monitor the tunisian league alot why hasnt he been singled out for a trasfer to the french league? 9ja soccer fans are not different from the englsh fans. Too much hype!

We don’t have a strong attack at the moment this is an area the coach needs to look into if we want to do well at the moment.

Let’s just be moderate with our critic’s and hype, The one’s we over praised will surely be over motivated and those one’s we scrutinised are definately gonna be low in spirit…all this lads have their free times and they do normally reads stuffs we write as well…Let’s take for instance Francis Uzoho debut for Nigeria against Argentina it’s was a perfect and matured displayed from the young man.. why is that? Just bcos he was coming in for the first time no pressure at all..that was his true quality..but once we Nigerian’s fans saw him that night alots of debate on his experience and stuff, our journalist ‘re not helping the matter as well Rohr said this about Uzoho, Rohr said that about Uzoho things like that put pressure on young lads like Uzoho Ebuehi and co.one thing our people don’t understand is that clamouring for a player’s invitation to the national team on sport site will not affect coaches decision by any means..one thing i strongly believed is that super eagles ‘re not gonna be smack arround like a moron in russia…the lads ‘re gonna fight until they reach their limit…let’s all understand that most of this lads ‘re still growing individually as a player and it won’t be a good idea to kill their morals even b4 they grow…We Nigerians ‘re a born fighter not only in sport but generally we have characters in all means of life….

@ Bestsports, nice compilation. Please include Ebere Eze and Kelechi Nwakali in your list. These two players are better than Kingsley Sokari.
