Uruguay kicked off their Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Egypt who left the recovering Mohamed Salah on the bench for the whole game at the Ekeratinburg Arena on Friday.
Jose Jimenez’s 90th minute header gave Uruguay a crucial win over Egypt who posted a decent display in the encounter.
Jimenez rose higher than the Egyptian defence to head in Carlos Sanchez’s freekick from the right into the net from seven yards.
The Pharoahs of Egypt matched the South Americans with their pace and skill all through the encounter but failed to create scoring chances to match their efforts in the final third.
Uruguay’s best chances fell to Luiz Suarez who failed to convert any of the three clear-cut chances that came his way. Edinson Cavani also had attempts at goal.
Barcelona star Suarez failed to finish a brilliant move from the six-yard box in the 14th minute as the first half ended goalless.
Suarez beat Ahmed Hegazi for pace after his strike partner Edinson Cavani lifted the ball to his path early in the second half but his goal-bound shot was saved by Mohamed El Shenawy who was in goal for Egypt.
Egypt continued to dictate the tempo of the games and had lots of possession which forced the Uruguay side to sit deep and rely solely on the counter-attack.
In the 73rd minute, Suarez again failed to convert another goal-bound move whena pass was flicked to his path by Cavani but instead of poking the ball, Suarez tried to round the goalkeeper but El Shenawy saved the ball from his legs.
Cavani also came close twice in the closing stages of the game. He forced a brilliant save from El Shenawy in the 83rd minute after he was teed up with a header from Suarez.
And minutes later the Paris Saint-Germain striker was denied by the woodwork from a free-kick before Jimenez broke the deadlock in the 90th minute with a thumping header to hand Uruguay a vital win over Egypt.
