Liverpool extended their unbeaten home run in the English Premier League to 17 games following a 2-0 home win against Newcastle United at Anfield on Saturday.
Egyptian winger Mohammed Salah and Senegal forward Saido Mane scored both goals for the Reds who moved into second position ahead of Manchester United, who have played a game fewer.
The visitors put up strong resistance in the opening minutes but succumbed to the firepower of their hosts five minutes before the break with Salah breaking the deadlock for his 24th league goal of the season which makes him joint-top scorer with Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.
Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain picked the ball in midfield before bursting forward and played the ball to an unmarked Salah inside the box. The Egyptian took a touch before firing the ball into the net for his 32nd goal of the season in all competitions.
Mane increased Liverpool’s lead in the 56th minute.
Roberto Firmino found space inside the box and squeezed a clever pass to Mane who slotted the ball into the net.
