Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that Chile forward Alexis Sanchez and Germany defender Shokdran Mustafi will soon return to training with the Gunners.
The two players were involved in the FIFA Confederations Cup final in Russia on July 2 with Mustafi’s Germany winning 1-0 to emerge as champions. While Mustafi has not been in the news lately, Sanchez has been the subject of transfer speculation linking him away from Arsenal.
The former Barcelona star, who will be 29 in December, recently said while on holiday in Chile that he wanted to leave Arsenal in order to play in the UEFA Champions League, as the Gunners will be missing out on the elite competition for the first time in years having finished fifth in the Premier League last season.
“Alexis and Mustafi, their first training session will be on Sunday, the day we play against Sevilla [in the Emirates Cup],” Wenger told Arsenal Player on Thursday.
“They are practising on the day.
“First of all you make a really good check up of where they are, how much they have worked during their break.
“After, once you know where you stand, they need an adjusted programme and to see how quickly you can fit them in again.
“Of course it depends as well on what is the need in the squad, what is their quality. All of these things together make your decision. Do you put them on the bench when they are not ready [to start]? It is easier to put a striker on the bench than a defender, sometimes. Because in a short period they can make an impact. We’ll see.”
