Sherwood: Musa’s First Goal Ruined Iceland Plans

By Johnny Edward:

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood believes Ahmed Musa’s opening goal rattled Iceland in their second Russia 2018 Group D game against Iceland, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Nigeria beat Iceland 2-0 in Volgograd on Friday.

The Leicester City forward made history becoming the first Nigerian player to score in two FIFA World Cups.

Musa scored twice against Argentina at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

“Nigeria team was not set out to play at the start just as the Iceland team did not start out playing to win,” former Ireland international Sherwood said on SuperSport TV where he is working as a World Cup pundit.

“But the goal from Musa opened up the game which made the Iceland team come out to attack but unfortunately they conceded again which killed them off.

“They (Super Eagles) are the most vulnerable team in terms of set piece at this tournament but they improved and showed courage.”

Nigeria are now second in Group D after their 2-0 win over Iceland with three points from two games.

They must avoid defeat last group game against Argentina to seal qualification to the round of 16.

Tim have not said anything new. It is almost normal for teams to switch off after the first goal. I remembered Argentina scored first but they equalized. Nigeria has a plan and it was based on the temperature that was at 30°Celsius. As their name indicate they live in icy area. Very cold. So the temperature was not friendly. The 1st half was to wear them out and the 2nd half was to increase the tempo. It worked. The Icelanders could not cope as they were even praying for the game to end. That was what happened and not the first goal.

  • Goals are not only meant to propel a team to victory but they are also meant to ruin the opponent’s plans so nothing new there.

Having said that though, it is also true that a team is most vulnerable when they have scored but the Super Eagles proved this wrong yesterday by staying resulote and showing courage and character, not only not to concede, but to add to their goal and hold out for a memorable win.

we can hold Argentina to a draw, but we beg FIFA to watch Croatia vs Iceland match cuz Croatia can do something funny to give d Icelanders advantage. I envisage a situatio where we hold Argentina, bt Croatia betrays is and hand d second ticket to Iceland. May God scatter ds kind of evil plan. Amen

U talk like the Icelanders communicated to u dat the game shd end! U shd ‘ve knwn that it waz our first goal nd the second that ruined their plan!

  • We would have fell like a pack of cards had rohr started onazi or joel obi. With both players we wouldnt have been able to keep possession like we did in both halves of d game. Etebo, mikel and ndidi are d best midfielders in that group of players, these guys are not only good at keeping possesion but also great at wining d ball back and launching attacks. Argentina and france are in for hard times. Especially against france where we will have ndidi and kante squaring off. Fifa can go to hell with their rankings. We will show them what we are made of.
