Super Eagles assistant coach Ike Shorunmu has insisted that Lille FC of France first choice goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama remains Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper despite Dimitar Berbetov efforts to end his three clean sheets in a Lique 1 clash that saw AS Monaco playing a 1-1 draw with Lille at the weekend.
Enyeama who is one of the three goalkeepers invited by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF for this month’s double header against Congo DR and South Africa in the 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifying round is expected to make good impact in ensuring Nigeria qualify for the tournament billed to hold in Morocco.
Speaking from the Super Eagles camp in Calabar yesterday, Shorunmu a former Grasshoppers FC of Switzerland player told Complete Sports that clean sheet is not as important as the efforts he will put in to ensure his club wins the league at the end of the season.
“Well, I must commend Enyeama’s effort in ensuring that Lille remain a strong contender for the French title and as we all know, he has been making a good contribution to the club’s progress in France, losing a clean sheet should not be seen as a big deal at this level. They still have many matches to play and we can only wish him the very best”, Shorunmu said.
“We know what he has done at the national level and what he can still do, so I believe that Enyeama is a quality goalkeeper and he remains the best we have in Nigeria today. Berbatov’s goal will not stop him from giving his best for Nigeria and his club.
Meanwhile, Enyeama will be expected to be a big help in ensuring that Nigeria qualify for next year’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco.
