By Bamidele Boluwaji: Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has submitted that the Home Eagles are not failures despite their inability to win the 2018 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) which was concluded in Morocco on Sunday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
The Home Eagles suffered a 4-0 defeat from the host nation in the final played on Sunday but Shorunmu believes that the boys did their best, saying positives should be taken away from Nigeria’s participation in the tournament.
“Well, whatever anyone says about the team, I want to believe that they are not failures despite not winning the title,” the former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer told CSN.
“In a tournament like this, what we should see mostly should be the positives. The World Cup is coming and we had the two coaches, I mean Gernot Rohr and Salisu Yusuf in Morocco who also saw the players play, even if they cannot make the World Cup, the Nations Cup is there and other tournaments which they can be called upon to play.
“Personally, I believe that this is another experience for the players which will make them better and they should just be encouraged.”
Shorunmu however called on the players to keep their eyes on the ball.
“The only advice I can give is to tell them to keep working hard and be focused; the fact that they did not win this CHAN does not mean they will not win another one. They should just believe in themselves while we should also encourage them,” he added.
The silver-winning team returned to Nigeria on Tuesday morning and were immediately flown to Abuja where they are expected to be presented to President Mohamadu Buhari.
