Siasia: Ambrose, Ajayi, Ejide Should’ve Been In World Cup Squad; Eagles Can’t Win Trophy

Siasia: Ambrose, Ajayi, Ejide Should’ve Been In World Cup Squad; Eagles Can’t Win Trophy

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:
Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has expressed surprise at the exclusion of the duo of Ambrose Efe of Hibernian and Al Ahly’s Junior Ajayi as well as goalkeeper Austin Ejide from the 30-man provisional list for the Russia 2018 World Cup, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Siasia told the media in Abuja on Tuesday that the coach Gernot Rohr has made his selection, and his choice of players for the World Cup should be respected because he is responsible for whatever result the team get in Russia.

“I think Efe’s experience and form for his Scottish side Hibernian is good enough to get him into the list, and he would be of immense help to the Super Eagles defence at the World Cup while Junior Ajayi would have added fire power to the Eagles attack, and should have been given the chance to prove himself,” Siasia, who starred for Nigeria at the World Cup in 1994, said.

“All the same, the coach knows what he is doing and has picked his team, we just have to support him for Nigeria to do well in Russia. We cannot win the World Cup but if we emerge from the group stage, our team can spring some surprises.”

Asked if the exclusion of Vincent Enyeama would be felt in the Eagles, Siasia’s answer was an emphatic no, stressing that the former captain of the Super Eagles was not keen to be part of the team and he has not been playing for his club Lille.

He said Ezenwa was number one during the qualifiers and should retain that role for World Cup. Siasia however wished that the coach had extended invitation to Austin Ejide for his experience and physicality.

Thank God you weren’t the one coaching Nigeria in the World Cup. It would have been a total disaster, I can only imagine the kind of squad you would have chosen maybe players totally different from the ones that played the qualifiers and then call yourself a coach. Please just leave Rohr to do his job and be gone with your pessimism

what is wrong on his suggestions?. Ejide at moment is the nigeria best Goal keeper, ajayi is doing well and ambrose is doing perfectly, he only sy;s they should have been in the 30 man list so we as fans can access them,,, so do you think akpeyi is better than Ejide or ugbo better than ambrose,,ajayi is our new prospect he deserve chance also bcos he is a nigerian, the list is very good but we will miss Ejide , mark my word.

First of all he is very negative, how can he say Nigeria can’t win the trophy? Secondly, he is a kind of coach that is based on individual performance and not team work and unfortunately Soccer is a team sports and no team can succeed beard on just the individual performance of a player. Yes a player needs to be good to be in a team but no matter how good a player is if he doesn’t fit into the coaches philosophy then the player would not fit into that team. That is one thing that is missing in African soccer especially in Nigerian soccer, all a Nigerian coach looks at is individual performance and they don’t consider if the player can fit into his tactics or not he is good, he is good. Look at teams like Liverpool how many of their players are works class players like Madrid or Barça but yet they are in UCL finals “TEAM WORK” Also take a look at the track Greece used to win Euro 2008, none of those players were world class players yet they won “Team Work” What happened to Spain in the last World Cup even with their world clear players? Yes TEAM WORK happened to them Deficiency of Team work happened to Spain. You can’t just pick a player and start using him especially if you are not sure he fits in to your Philosophy, Style and Game tactics. Ajayi was invited to the team during friendlies and now he isn’t you should know the coach probably doesn’t like his style of play. Players should be called up not just because they can play but because they deserve to be in the team.

my guy i see that you are among those who used sentiment. tell me who among do you want to replace? Ejide had been a flop for the super Eagles once,Ambrose had never been creative enough, so leave the selected player and the unselected once better luck next time
Siasia have that trace of sentimentalism running in his blood stream, praise God he is not the coach, Nigeria is playing a more creative, attacking football, better than siasia era

I think Ejide and Ambrose Efe should have been retained bcos of their experience but as Siasia has rightly said, the coach has selected the players he feel are the best. For me, Brown Ideye should have made the team also, but then everybody can’t go to the world cup.

  • Efe, ejide should have been given a chance.2ndly should give attention to akpeyi in de camp. Deal with his courage that’s all. He is one of the best keepers for now though he made mistakes in de past. just opinion

It beats me flat why people won’t leave Enyeama alone. This is someone who had served his country meritoriously and had retired. Why bring him into the fray, with a cacophony of voices: include Enyeama in the list don’t include Enyeama, recall him, don’t recall him!!! Is this a sign of respect?

  • BabaDudu 7 days ago

How can Austin Ejide be invited?
You want him invited so he could collect bribe and throw the ball into our own net abi?

Who can forget this match against Scotland? If you have, well see it again

Siasia is right but let us try other people and see what they can bring. Is not as if we will win the World Cup with those guys. So let’s give uZoho a chance.

  • Beejay 7 days ago

The problem with our coaches in Nigeria is that the don’t learn from history. When you have the core of a team, do not disintegrate them before a major tournament. Ambrose and Ejide have never been invited to the team under Rohr, so why expect them now. Ajayi had his opportunity but blew it by reporting late for our last friendlies. Our indigenous coaches should humble themselves and learn from Rohr.

  • PapaFem 7 days ago

Ejide should not come anywhere near the team. I don’t like his temperament. He loses composure anytime the team is losing or under pressure. As for Ambrose, I think he deserves a place in the team. But when you are a defender and playing Hibernia, it’ll always be difficult to get into the world cup team of a coach who doesn’t know you and has never worked with you. Simmy Nwankwo was greatly helped by the goals he scores in Italy. If Ambrose were a striker and banging goals in Scotland, he would surely be in the team, no matter what. Let’s just give those selected a benefit of doubt. Who knows?

  • One thing about Coach Rohr is that he appears open to the idea of inviting players who are doing well at any club in any country.

When Coach Rohr took over, Ambrose was having a horrendous club situation for months: Brendan Rodgers was never going to play him again after calamitous mistakes; Celtic fans wanted him out and proposed moves to English championship clubs failed to materialise.

Unfortunately for Efe Ambrose, by the time he stabilised his club situation, the back-line of this Super Eagles
team was already stable and saturated.

When he had the chance, Efe failed to make the right full back position in the team his personal property and unfortunately lost his place at a time when he was starting to find a place in the heart of the Super Eagles defence and a time he became a genuine goal threat – he scored against Cameroon and Swaziland both in 2015.

He is a decent defender and will be missed across a section of us fans.

For me, I have since moved on from expecting him to be invited and wish those invited a fruitful outing in Russia (for those who make the final list).

    • Paschal 6 days ago

You are right deo. Furthermore I think Ambrose is approaching 40 years right now. Even if he is invited I dont see him displacing Leon Balogun, Ekong or Shehu because these guys are younger and faster. As for Ejide, maybe he could have been invited ahead of Akpeyi and Ajiboye but I feel we must give the coach our trust. Finally am still insisting that apart from Mikel there is no natural creative midfielder in this team. Iwobi, Etebo, Joel Obi and Kelechi are not natural creative midfielders. We pray Mikel doesnt get injured sha.

The three next Friendly matches will definitely EXPOSE many players, LIKE the goalkeepers department and defenders and strikers! Then we could hurriedly make corrections. I would have love to see Ebere of QPR because we still lack CREATIVITY. If mikel obi is injured nko? We can only hope.

  • Ayphillydegreat 6 days ago

This is the first time in a long time that the SuperEagles will be going to the Mundial with players playing regularly for their various clubs. I’m only concerned about the ones that are recuperating or just coming back from injury. If everyone can prove their fitness, SuperEagles will shock the world in the land of Putin.

This team to me is a replica of the 94 team. Maybe not so much in terms of talents. However, in terms of team unity and bonding with a sprinkle of talents here and there we shall overcome Croatia, Iceland and Argentina.

In 1994 there were 6 significant players that makes the team thick. Yekini, Amokachi, Amunike, JayJay, Oliseh and Finidi. With the Gentle Giant(Uche), Chidi Nwanu and Dodo Mayana(Rufai) complimenting them from the rear. Arguably Africa’s best ever collection of talents. The bench itself was a joy to behold, Efan Ekoku, Ikpeba, Keshi, Mutiu, SiaOne, and the likes.

In today’s SuperEagles, in terms of talents we have Moses, Iwobi, Iheanacho, Ndidi(I hope he’d be fit) and General Mikel Obi. With possibly J Obi (I hope he’s in full fitness too), Onazi and the “Splash Brothers”(Ekong and Commander Balogun) complimenting them from the rear.

Obviously, we might not have the experience of the great Vincent in goal, but I believe in Francis Odinaka Uzoho. Nigeria might’ve found a goalkeeper for the next 15 to 20 years, just as we discovered the great Enyeama in 2002. Unlike in 1994 that the SuperEagles were ranked 5th in the world and had won AFCON preceding the WorldCup. These Eagles are going to the Mundial as the undisputed underdogs, and that is where the never say die Nigerian DNA will come to play. Whatever in Russia I know for sure that my darling SuperEagles will not be intimidated. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

Lol! @Tgrace. I’m not that old ooo! I was such a kid back then following my Dad around. Enthusiastically supporting the great SuperEagles of the 90s. He was such a fanatic of the great GreenEagles of the 80s. That’s how I’ve been a SuperEagles fanatic for life. Now I’m in my mid 30s, but those memories continue to linger in my heart and soul for time indefinite. I hope these present SuperEagles can achieve something extraordinary to also write their own piece of magnificent history which my generation was accustomed to while growing up.

People have different opinions over matters raised depending on their education, exposure & experience so it would always be wrong to attack commentators in this forum for sharing their thoughts. It is definitely a sign of poor education & poor self worth.
Siasia has a point here. Siasia’s worth is well known: Olympic Silver & bronze medals, & U-21 Silver Medal. Most world top rated coaches dont have anything worthwhile to flaunt around so l respect him.
Exclusion of experirnced keeper as Austin Ejide, and top striker Ajayi will haunt and hurt this team badly. Super Eagles might be heading for a disastrous participation mark my word. Gernot Rohr was not guided aright in choosing his team & could just pickup his bag and disappear after a disastrous outing.
But as patriotic Nigerians we just have to respect his choice & support the team.

    • Cappaccino 6 days ago

      Fine…
My guy, Rohr has done a good job coming into a team he is not familiar with and making them qualify with one match left and without losing a game who else had done that with the Nigerian team? Even the set of 94′ did not achieve this feat. I don’t mean to sound callous but Siasia is an average coach, if he was good trust me he would be coaching a good team in Europe just like Oliseh, he is only good with the younger teams because They are much easier to work with.

    • Chairmanfemi 6 days ago

@Pablo, please if you don’t have any better thing to say I advise you to just keep scrolling down and reading other comments. The squad Coach GR selected is a squad capable of crushing anyteam. Just imagine a below par Coach like Siasia telling Rohr what to do??? When he was in charge of the Senior team, what did he achieve? He’s only good at handling Youth teams and he has nothing to do with the senior team. Many people commenting on this page don’t even know that Ajayi is presently injured and hasn’t played the last 3-4 matches. Coach Rohr is trying to work with a team that understands each other. We have just few days to go to the world cup so Efe’s inclusion can’t fit in. Let the defenders that are there continue to work with each other and expect the best from the Super Eagles. All those wishing Nigeria a disastrous outing @the world cup should please look for Tunisia or Senegal to support

  • Eichie Cletus 6 days ago

Was expecting the coach to include Kayode olarenwaju, the guy has goal sense and very speedy.I just like his speed. can be an added advantage for the eagles. Goodluck to the super eagles .

U-23 is not super eagles, olympic is not world cup.leave rohr alone,d man has done his job till now.wat has ejide done to merit a call up he was there b4 and he didn’t do anything worthwhile,u people talking about experience how did these players get their own experience is it no by playing.enyeama was given a chance at d 2002 world cup and he became one of d best,xo let uzoho get his own chance.we have been going to world cup with experience with nothing to show for it.neymar, messi and co didn’t nid experience wen dey started,if u good u good, yes i agree experience counts but not all d time.sorri to say i won’t rate ambrose over any defender in dat list neither will i rate egide over those gk.xo both of them should go and rest.

Nigeria and their way of doing things. How is Ajayi a world class striker? and for Ejide when last did he play for the national team? even the last time Siasia coach the super eagle Ejide was not even invited so why is he asking for his return now? Ambrose has not also been part of the team for a long time and besides who is he going to bench there? let us just support the team irrespective of their performance at the world cup but i’am optimistic they will do well. Best of luck to them.

  • Ayphillydegreat 6 days ago

I will agree with @Tony on this one. I like Ambrose, but I think he shut himself in the foot when his club woes began at Celtic as @deo pointed out with aplomb. He had a chance to go to Standard Liege at the time, infact I think he was offered a contract at Liege, but he turned it down because he didn’t want to move his family away from the UK, and the proposed move to the English Championship backfired spectacularly.

He was inactive for some time which coincided with the beginning of Rohrs tenure as the SuperEagles gaffer. Not until his former coach at Celtic gave him a lifeline to join him at Hibernia. A club that at the time was playing in the Scottish Championship (2nd division)

Come to the think of it. The Scottish league sucks big time and if you’re playing at Hibernia!!!!! Lord have mercy. Even if it’s a club like Rangers I will understand, but Hibernia!!! I beg to differ. Efe is a decent defender, but he’s not going to displace any of the defenders we currently have on the list. As for Ejide, he should never be anywhere near our jersey again. He has done is bit and the SuperEagles have since moved on with a prospective young goalie who will continue to improve and could reach prominence at the Mundial.

Ajayi is not any difference from Lokosa. Did you guys watch him at the Olympics? Dude was incredibly awful. I will prefer an Olanrewaju Kayode or Sadiq Umar to Ajayi, but the players we currently have in the attacking positions are the best Nigeria can offer at the moment.

  • Football had philosophy and style wich makes up a team tactics and style of play,In 2013,Sunday Mba wasnt one of the best midfielders we had then, but his style of play fits perfectly with Keshi’s philosophy and look what happened..We don’t need Ambrose and Ejike both are still average players that may not fit into Rohr’s syle of play;I think the coach wants to keep working with the team he knows, rather than bringing in new faces each time..this team is the best we have at the moment..In 2014 we had many new faces, like Uchebo, Azeez that all gat nothing to offer..

Rohr has done well with his selection of the Players so let’s just continue to pray for his success in the Mundial… My prayers are with him to succeed and make name for Nigeria and himself. I think the ONLY Player I wished to have been in the list is Henry unfortunately his club coach sabotaged his desire in that regard successfully. I pray tyronne the son of EBUEHI can really prove himself in the training and make the final cut. Generally, may the useful ones be chosen amongst them all. Ameen.
    UP SUPER EAGLES!
    ABDUL andah; that Okene guy!

  • i dnt think the exclusion of anybody will affect the super eagles, mark my word. i av seen this thing before! i saw our players doing so well at the world cup.According to my dream This team is a world class team not average!

  • Do u guys think iceland is afraid of Croatian team tagged “super stars”? na! if yes they would have lost scandalously to croatia. this team should not nd never b afraid of any team. they are absolutely dangerous! croatia! here we come!

  • Tony, I couldn’t agree with your contributions more!

As you so eloquently put it: Under-23 is not Super Eagles and Olympics is not World Cup.

    Spot on!

In his first national team senior managerial appointment, he failed to qualify Nigeria for the African Cup of Nations tournament for the first time since 1986 – shocking! (I know we did not attend the 1996 and 1998 editions; but those were because of a certain (Late) General Sani Abacha).

In his second senior national team managerial assignment, he was put in charge of a Rapid Response Rescue Coaching crew tasked to resuscitate Nigeria’s failing efforts to qualify for the 2017 African Cup of nations after Pep Guardiola of Africa (Mr Sunday Oliseh) resigned as head coach.

With high calibre, high quality players at his disposal, Siasia only managed a meagre 1 point out of a possible 6 against Egypt, home and away.

Hence, one can be forgiven for not taking his views very seriously particularly if they conflict with the judgement of a coach (Rohr) who has excelled in areas where Mr Siasia is yet to taste success as a coach.

Still, just like every Nigerian, Mr Sia-One is well entitled to have and share his views.

    DID YOU KNOW
super eagles will not win the World Cup unless Ajayi, Ejide and Ambrose is included in the final 23 man list going to the World Cup?
.. I dont know why people talk about experience, when ambrose was a core member of the super eagle we have defence problem.. but presently, am rest assured we dont have defence problem anymore without the experience Ambrose.
..I dont even think he is better than Balogun, King Kong, Agbo and Omerue!

Coach Samson Siasia, love him or hate him, is one of the best around, as central striker in his playing days for Club and Country, and ex-Nigeria’s coach.
This man deserves some respect from these youth who criticize him without good knowledge of the wealth of experience Coach Siasia parades.
Prayer is good but it doesn’t play a part in modern football as much as hardwork, planning, preparation, skill and strategies, else Nigeria would have won the previous WCs.
So, I hope the Super Eagles does well.
However, I doubt if this team can go beyond the first round, quote me.
World Cup is not tea, biscuits and butter game. We have a month to our first Match with Croatia to judge my position.
Some of you noise makers will hide your faces on the day disaster will strike.
Argentina front men: Messi (47) Dybala (26), Angel Di Maria (22), Higuian (27) & Aguero (31), Icardi (29) have a combined total fire power of 182 goals in this current season alone as compared to Nigeria’s: Ahmed Musa (9), Ighalo (7) Iwobi (3), Iheanacho (9), Moses Victor (4) Simon Moses (5) of 37 goals.
Francis Uzoho is still young & developing; he will be seriously tested.
He is a mere Div 3 goalkeeper, and Super Eagles foes know it too well.
    Statistics don’t lie..
Rohr’s team is average and experimental without a quality Goalkeeper and killer strikers.
    Mikel alone cannot do it.
Just wait and see, and Siasia will be a hero and vindicated for sounding the alarm much earlier on.
I am Super Eagles No.1 fan.
U don’t love Nigeria more than others who are courageous enough to voice their sincere but devergent opinions as Siasia does. Truth is always a bitter pill to the less informed.
    I rest my case..

    • Ayphillydegreat 6 days ago

Cameroons Fabrice Ondoa never played a minute of Laliga football before his heroics at the AFCON where he was the outstanding goalkeeper of the tournament. In 1990 Argentina with Maradona, Cannigia, Buruchaga and were the undisputed favorite lost to a 9 man Indomitable Lions. In 1998 Spain with Raul, Hierro, Luis Enrique and a host of other super stars lost to the SuperEagles. In 2002 France that’d just won virtually every single trophy there is lost to the Terranga Lions who are WorldCup debutant. You will be surprised that Argentina may not make it out of that group. You no like SiaOne reach me. But to think that Nigeria will not win the WorldCup because of Efe, Ajayi and Ejide is like losing touch with reality.

  • now i believe that samson siasia is very controversial,i have often heard people saying that he is fond of causing contoversies

I see nothing wrong with d squad. This is d best we could have at d moment… These are almost d players dat played d qualifiers.. Y do u den want to add players who myt spoil d cohesion nd unity of d team. Can u remember wot keshi did in 2014 wen he invited player who were not oart of d team dat win d afcon 2013 and who were not performing at there various club like Gabriel Reuben, shola ameobi, nwafor, uchebor, nd d likes. He decided to drop MBA,ike uche, martins,nd d likes. And we saw how dey messed up. Di’s is one of d first time a Nigeria team is filled with first team players in there clubs…
Rohr as done a great job with dat selection… And I don’t think d goal keeping aspect should b an issue. As we av ad d same problem in d past and it was solved. We remember wen rufai was out, ike shorunmu came in, wen ike was out, enyeama came in.. All wot d goal keepers need is a big match dat can boost there confidence level. If u don’t know, Nigeria goal keeping dept is one of d best in Africa.  Thumbs up to rohr…

you all have put up brilliant arguments. Siaone did not say without those excluded guyz we will not win. on paper, we are not favorites, looking at our performance in grade A games, we have been average with a one-Mikel midfield option. our defense is very young, when tested by the zambians fast play, we all sat at the edge of our seats
This midfield problem may cause us a crash if our opponents exploit it. Iwobi, KC, Ahmed, Victor Moses can all cause any team much problems if and only if the midfield is coordinated…and it is only coordinated if Mikel is there. So, what if mikel is played out or injured? With due respect to all our national team coaches, none of them has really solved this post-Jay-Jay problem in the midfield.

  • Djeniko 6 days ago

I have enjoyed the debate here!! Siasia only voiced his opinion and so the opinion should be debated on. When you start to attack the person, you are off the track and not smart. Smart ones attack issues and not the person. Ambrose Efe, Ejide and Ajayi are all Nigerians and they are entitled to be invited. This coach did not invite them. Others may suggest other players that are supposed to be invited. Listen to the radio and TV debates, you will be surprised. Someone even suggested Vincent Enyeama. At this stage!! This Gernot Rohr list is sound. A lot has been considered and many things will come into play selecting the final 23 man list proper. Some are solidly sure they will be in Russia. Mikel, Victor Moses, Balogun, Troost, Shehu, Iwobi, Ighalo, Ezenwa, Ndidi, Ahmed Musa, Onazi, Echiejele, and other 11. We should respect the opinion of the other person and not abuse the person. We are created in God’s image.

    • Bomboy 5 days ago

@ Djeniko, that was very sound and mature of you. Kudos.

  • Whenever anybody chooses to go public to the world’s media with their opinions and views on aspects of any discipline, they open the door to their pedigree and personal achievements in that field of endeavour to be analysised along with the views they espouse.

That is why some people are referred to as an “Authority in their field” and others will be scarcely taken seriously.

In yoruba, there is a saying that translates similar to: “somebody who offers you a shirt, it will be wise to first and foremost look at the quality of shirt that he is wearing (or has worn) “.

Whilst I respect Mr Sampson Siasia’s overall contributions to Nigeria’s football to date, I have to see the comments he espoused in this article against the backdrop of his achievements as a SENIOR national team coach and offer my feedback accordingly.

Seeing things solely from that concept (senior management of a national team) , Mr Siasia’s views do not appear to add up.

Still his fans will find it hard to swallow the criticisms that has come his way in the process of trying to put his views on this matter (only) in context.

Though the absence of these players siasia surgested won’t hurt the super eagles, but for me siasia is the only Nigerian coach with a known coaching phylosophy, one of the problems facing our sports sector is our inability to accept bad result during rebuilding process, then we go back to patching things up again to get result, Siasia was in the proccess of giving us the all attacking super eagles we all desire in 2011 when the team failled to qaulify for afcon, our playing style has nosedived so much that countries like mozambique, benin republic and other miniors use to dorminate us that we usualy have our hearts in our mouths during games, so we turned to siasia whose team usually play attacking football, and he was delivering the style will all long for but unfurtunately, the team is still a work in progress and they were shiping goals as well as they were scoring, though his team always concede goals but they normaly score enough to win games, even when he came on a rescue mission in 2017, despite having few training sesions his team played very well and can count themselves unlucky to lose against a very good egyptian team guided by an experience coach hector cuper, over the two legs, egypt later reach the afcon final, for me siasia is a good coach, when he handles any team, win or lose you will always see his influence written all over that team, his teams are always entertainig, un-23 and un-20 may not be the senoir national team, but let other local coaches match his record and do it in style like he always do, the flying eagles are now strugling to qaulify for tournaments or make an impact when they get there, even when we have a very good team in 2015 that has played together for two years since their days in the un- 17, take a bow siaone.
