Siasia: How My Eagles Beat Argentina

–Ex-Eagles boss opens up on how his team thrashed Argentina

Former Nigeria coach Samson Siasia has revealed that determination propelled the Super Eagles to thrash Argentina 4-1 in a friendly in June 2011.

This was the first win for Nigeria at full international level and even Siasia admitted he was not sure his team could achieve it.

Ike Uche gave Nigeria an early lead with a 10th minute strike when he riffled home a shot off a pass from Joel Obi, who wiggled his way through the Argentina goal area before he found Uche.

Eagles doubled the lead in the 26th minute, when Obinna Nsofor converted a spot kick after the referee adjudged Federico Fazio to have brought down Victor Anichebe.

The game was wrapped up when Ike Uche completed a first-half brace in the 40th minute, when he hit target off Taye Taiwo’s cross.

Emmanuel Emenike put the icing on the cake for Nigeria with the fourth goal six minutes after resumption of second half when he delightfully lobbed the ball over the advancing goalkeeper for his first international goal.

Argentina’s consolation goal was scored from the penalty spot through Mauro Boselli eight minutes into injury time.

Siasia told AfricanFootball.com: “Argentina believed they will come to Nigeria and beat us again. I wasn’t even really sure we could beat them. But on the day we played so well and scored some great goals.

“We were so determined to get our pound of flesh and we got it.”

A rematch was hurriedly arranged months laterin Bangladesh and the South Americans won 2-1.
Siasia said his team made too many mistakes and paid dearly for them.

“It was a good game but we made a lot of mistakes, players were keeping the ball for too long and Messi was dribbling everybody,” he recalled.

“We also had our chances to tie the game but did not take them.”

Siasia’s other meetings against Argentina were as a player at the 1994 World Cup, where he scored a superb goal to give the Eagles a shock lead only for Diego Maradona to inspire his team to fight back and win 2-1.

He was also the coach of the losing team when Argentina beat the Flying Eagles to win the 2005 FIFA U20 World Cup in the Netherlands and when Nigeria fell 1-0 to the South mAmericans in the final of the 2008 Beijing Olympics football event.
