Siasia Plans Early Camping For U-23 Eagles

By Richard J ideaka, Abuja:

Newly appointed Chief Coach of the National U- 23 team, Samson Siasia has revealed plans to begin early preparations for both the Olympic and All Africa Games qualifiers billed to start in February next year.

Speaking in Abuja yesterday, Siasia said he has begun scouting for players from the domestic league and has been making contacts with club coaches to select players for camping.

Siasia divulged further that he would build his team around the home based player since the competitions are not on FIFA calendar and foreign clubs are not compelled to release players to their countries during the qualifiers.

“I want to start early camping so that I can screen players through elimination by substitution and get a good blend of players to train with before the qualifiers begin.

“Some Super Eagles players are also eligible to play for the U-23 team and I would invite those that meet the standard to be in the team. Some foreign based players who are available would also be invited but that will be at a later stage of the qualifiers or the games proper,” he stated.

Siasia who lost the Super Eagles job to Keshi after he failed to qualify Nigeria for the African Cup of Nation in 2012 led the Dream Team to the Beijing Olympics and lost in the final to Argentina to return with a silver medal.

siasia has a good focus. I think iam in agreement with his idea of using home based players as the nucleus of the team for the fact that foreign teams would not be compelled to play for their father’s land in the tournament proper. I belief that we have many good players like iheanacho, okocha, kanu, finidi, amunike, mutiu, owolabi, ikpeba and siasia e.t.c in our domestic league if the coach spreads his tentacles to nooks and crannies of the country. best luck my beloved SIA ONE

There is no doubt that Siasia has some qualities of a good coach but he depends so much on public sentiment and support to get a job. After he lost his job the last time at the NFF, as a good coach he should gone international to get a coaching job either in Nigeria or in Africa, but he reduced himself to a sports administrator in Bayelsa, that job was giving to him because he is from that state, he couldn’t have been the most qualified Sports administrator in the state. Dose Siasia want reaching the Olympic final to be his greatest career achievement? He has no club. As a professional coach he should not an opportunist like he is currently doing, compete to get a job not all this appointments that depend who you know. I know his fan will to tear me apart, but that is the truth. Let us continue the conversation.
