Sigurdsson On ‘Worst Performance In Years’

Gylfi Sigurdsson says Iceland’s 6-0 defeat to Switzerland was their worst performance in years and blamed key absences from the squad.

The Everton schemer played the full 90 minutes as Erik Hamren’s side capitulated in St Gallen, where Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri was one of six different goalscorers for the hosts in a Uefa Nations League clash.

“This is hugely frustrating,” said Sigurdsson after the match.
“It was a very poor performance and it was weak from us.

“It’s hard to assess such games 20 minutes afterwards, but this was definitely one of our worst performances for many years.”

Iceland were missing a number of established players from their 2018 World Cup squad, including Aron Gunnarsson, Alfred Finnbogason, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Emil Hallfredsson because of injury.

“We were missing half a team,” Sigurdsson added.
“We have to face the fact that there are 5-6 key players out of the team. As hard as it is, the squad is not so big that we can come to Switzerland without five players who would start and expect to win.”
