Sodje: Falconets Made Nigerians Proud

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has joined the bandwagon of Nigerians who have expressed their appreciation of the Falconets, who lost 1-0 to Germany in the final of the FIFA U-20 Women World Cup in Montreal, Canada on Monday morning.

Peter Dedevbo’s girls conceded a 98th minute goal in the first half of extra half after holding the Germans to a goalless draw after 90 minutes of action.

Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala was even denied a goal when Loveth Ayila interrupted with play and scuppered Nigeria’s chances of winning the game.

But despite the painful defeat to the Germans who have now won the World Cup three times, Sodje in an exclusive chat with Completesportsnigeria.com from his base in England says the team should not despair but take solace with their efforts.

“I have been so impressed with the quality of players in the Nigerian team, the Falconets.

“In the beginning of the tournament, nobody would have given the chance to get this far but we all saw that they grew from strength to strength.

“The U-20 girls should really be proud of themselves for what they have achieved in Canada,” Sodje states further.

The former Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic centre- back who was embroiled in a match fixing scandal alongside his brother Akpo but recently cleared of any wrong-doing by a Jury in London hopes that the women national teams will be adequately taken care of by the administrators.

“Female footballers have done Nigeria proud, just like the men. I hope they are looked after as well by the administrators. Their efforts have been commendable,” Sodje who has two daughters schooling in the United Kingdom tells Completesportsnigeria.com
