Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid, has hailed the pair of Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins as ‘magical’.
Both players who have totaled 11 goals and six assists in Seattle’s first eight games were again on target for Sounders’ as they cruised to a 3-1 victory over New York City FC Sunday night at Yankee Stadium with the Nigerian bagging a brace and providing an assist for Dempsey.
“He’s going into his third year with us. I think our guys have a better understanding of when he’s going to show and go.
“The understanding is not just between Dempsey and Oba, which has always been good. The understanding between the rest of the team and Oba is getting better
“Nothing surprises me with those two guys,” Schmid told reporters after the game.
“They’re just like that. I see it at practice all the time. They’re able to conjure up magical stuff. They’re unique and special and we’re happy to have them on our team.”
The win was Sounders third straight on the bounce – including two away – as they moved up to third spot on the MLS Western conference standings.
Martins put Seattle in front in the 23rd minute against the run of play for his 31st career MLS goal before putting the game beyond reach in the 66th minute, when he finished off an impressive 18-pass sequence with a clever back-heel chip from Clint Dempsey slotting his shot inside the far post for his sixth goal of the season.
