Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is facing a crisis up front as he prepares to face fourth-placed Southampton this evening with both Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud unavailable.
Welbeck, 23, is set to miss the fixture against the Saints with a thigh injury while Olivier Giroud is set to sit out the second of his three-match ban after receiving a straight red card against Queens Park Rangers on Boxing Day. It leaves Wenger with just top scorer Alexis Sanchez, Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell, who has barely played this season.
Sanchez has been fantastic in a free role for the Gunners, scoring 15 goals, but it seems that Wenger will have to ask him to operate in a central striker’s role against the Saints, who fought hard to draw 1-1 with Chelsea at the weekend.
Welbeck scored his first goal in weeks against West Ham United as the Gunners beat the Hammers 2-1 at Upton Park on Sunday, and with Giroud still out for another two games for his silly sending-off against QPR, Wenger now has a big decision to make.
Alexis Sanchez has created the most chances (50) at Arsenal this season.
