Southgate: We Feel Pain Of Defeat To Croatia, But Country Proud Of Our Achievement In Russia

England coach, Gareth Southgate, says that he is pleased with his side despite their semi-final defeat to Croatia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and that their people are proud of the team’s overall achievement in Russia, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

England side surrendered a one goal lead after Kierian Trippier’s curtain-raiser in the fifth minute as Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic’s goals secured the win for Croatia.

“At the moment we all feel the pain of the defeat. Did we expect to be in this position? I don’t think realistically any of us did,” Southgate said during his post-match interview.

“But when you’ve got to this pint and you’ve played in the way we have and played as well as we have in the first half you want to take those opportunities in life.

“The dressing room is a very difficult place at the moment. But what I will say is I’m remarkably proud of a group of players who have really advanced.

“I think the reaction of the supporters to them, compared to two years ago, tells them that, first and foremost, that experiences with England can be positive, the country are very proud of them and the way that they’ve played and there will in time be a lot of positives to take.”

  • This England team reminds me of the great England team of 1990. When they come home, they should be accorded the same heroes welcome the 1990 team had. I am really proud of the quality of football they played and the camaraderie they exhibited. The future of the guys is bright.

Pundits like Aphyllydegreat were proved right by classing this England side as genuine World Cup winning contenders although Croatia had to put a spanner into that (quotation) works.

With a semi-finals achievement, Gareth Southgate’s England exceeded the expectations of their fans, if only I could have been able to say the same about Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles.

This is to say we were unfortunate to be in group D. A team from group D nat as well left the WC cup!!!!!!!! If Nigeria was in another group perhaps it would have gone well for us. Nigeria should keep this team with a little tweak. Truth be told if England was in some other group, they would have not gone far as this. So I will appreciate what Gernot Rohr has done with the boys. I will also urge others to appreciate our coach and the boys

  • What quality football have they play? They tried agreed, but at same time we all know they are the most luckiest team in this tournament, the two great test they had they lost (Belgium and Croatia). Their results have been a lots better than their performances but all the same kudos to the lads be next tter luck .

  • @Tayo and Djeniko, God bless u.
Some people here talk abt Rohr as if he’s 100% bad. As if he has nothing up stairs. Forgetting that 80% nigeraians had once stopped watching super eagles’games in d past until he came. But we there u people like it or not, he continues.
