Spain Coach Hierro: When You Face Ronaldo, Anything Can Happen

Spain coach Fernando Hierro has admitted Cristiano Ronaldo was the difference in his side’s 3-3 draw against Portugal in Group B of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Friday.

Ronaldo rescued a point for Portugal with a superb free-kick to complete his hattrick and make it 3-3, becoming the oldest player, at 33, to score a World Cup hat-trick.

Spain were heading for victory with goals from Diego Costa (brace) and Nacho before Ronaldo’s late equaliser.

“When you play against a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, that kind of thing can happen,” Hierro who was only appointed as Spain coach on the eve of the World Cup following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui, said in his post-match press conference.

“Our team kept the ball well, but with Cristiano, one moment of inspiration can be enough.”

On his appointment as Spain coach on just a short notice, the former Real Madrid skipper said:” This situation has not been easy for me. But you have the chance to work with a team with so many good players, young and experienced, it makes everything much easier. Everyone in the team and the staff had a good attitude, and I feel like I’m privileged.”
