Super Eagles Grateful For Fans’ Support, Criticism; Resume Training For Argentina Clash

By Adeboye Amosu:

The Super Eagles will resume training today (Saturday) at their Essentuki camp base after Friday’s morale boosting 2-0 win against Iceland at the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The session will start at 4.45pm local time and will be open to fans and the media.

The team bagged their first win of the competition against Iceland with Leicester City forward Ahmed Musa netting twice in the second half.

The win saw them move from last to second position in Group D with three points, three adrift of leaders Croatia.

“We thank you for your support, positive & constructive criticisms. They played a major role in our return to winning ways,” the Super Eagles tweeted on Saturday.
“Now, the real hard work begins.
“We’re back on the pitch at 4.45pm for an open training session today.
#SoarSuperEagles #Team9jaStrong.”

The Super Eagles will face two-time winners Argentina in their final group game on Tuesday at the Krestovsky Stadium, St Petersburg.

Now people like tayo will understand that critics is another positive part of life most especially when truth is told. If majority of Nigerians is bold for the truth I tell you my brothers the black man will be in line of power with the western world when criticism is a has it’s place in every sector. Even as a career we have critic officers who earn millions from this but in Nigeria you’ll be jobless or killed as this

I am so very glad about our victory over Iceland. I wasn’t so sure we could do it. However, I have a piece of advice for the defence line of the team: they must avoid conceeding avoidable penalties. To have conceeded two consecutive penalties in their first two games is not good enough.

  • If u want to criticise, do it constructively, u notice miked said he wellcomes positive and constructive criticism. Not some bloke that dont know zilt about football coming here to tell us d nwakali brothers and usman should have been taken to d russia instead of mikel and etebo. At least we will not hear such rubbish in d next couple of days. They are probably waiting for us to lose against d argentines so they can continue frm where they stopped. The super eagles will continue to win and dissappoint these enermies of progress. IJN

  • SE Areas of Improvement.

With the heart warming victory against Iceland behind us, attention should now be focused on the task at hand – qualification for the knockout stage at the expense of Argentina and Iceland (who still have a chance to advance)

Much has been written about how excellent the Super Eagles were vs Iceland, let me try and address some areas of improvement/concern.

    1) Slow Start Syndrome: With no shots on target at the first half against Iceland, it is not too much to ask for the Super Eagles to attempt to ‘hit the ground running’ in subsequent matches.

    2) No more needless fouls: Two matches, two penalty awards against Nigeria for avoidable fouls – this needs to be addressed .

    3) Sideways/Backward passes: A lot of Nigeria’s possessions are in their own half with side or back passes – a bit more purposeful play will warm the heart of fans.

    4) Idowu: The Russian-Nigerian needs to do more to convince as to why Echiejile should remain on the bench.

    5) Ighalo: (I still believe in this guy and he can deliver). No longer a fan favourite, Ighalo now has no excuse not to score goals with Nigeria now playing 2 up-front (the type of strategy that has brought out the best in him in the past).

Set-pieces: Remember Amuneke’s neat finish against Italy in ’94 and Adepoju’ s bullet of a header against Spain in ’98, both came from set-pieces. The SE class of 2018 should add more quality to their set-pieces.

We now have our destiny in our hands, with focus, homework, hardwork and full concentration, making the second round is definitely possible.

    • Pls don’t mention ighalo when we have a serie a attacker in simy

Your #5 should be avoided like a plague. If Ighalo has not scored after playing 8 Games, what made you believe he will now score in a match that will determine their stay in or going home. Ighalo brings BAD luck to the National Team. Look at all the matches we played with out Ighalo, we won most of the time. ROHR, DO NOT PLAY IGHALO AGAINST ARGENTINA. YOU ARE HEREBY WARNED.

Simmy is more preferred coming on as a substitute not even IGHALO. Common sense means after 21 games 4 goals? Training material ighalo must be. We miss usman SADIK of siasia Olympic team who bulleted 4 goals impromptu!
