Super Eagles Stumble Again, Lose Final World Cup Friendly To Czech Republic

Super Eagles Stumble Again, Lose Final World Cup Friendly To Czech Republic

By James Agberebi:

The Super Eagles lost their second straight game as they went down 1-0 to Czech Republic in their final World Cup warm-up game at the Rudolf Tonn Stadium, Austria on Wednesday.

The only goal of the game was scored by Tomas Kalas who hammered in a rebound to give his side the lead.

This is the second time Nigeria will face Czech Republic. Their first meeting was at a four-nation tournament, the King Hassan II International Cup, in 1996 with Czech Republic winning 2-1.

Wednesday’s game saw the return of Wilfred Ndidi who missed the Super Eagles last two friendlies and gave a good account of himself.

In their five friendly games, the Super Eagles lost three, won one and drew one (beat Poland 1-0, lost 2-0 to Serbia, drew 1-1 with DR Congo, lost 2-1 to England and lost 1-0 to Czech Republic).

They will open their campaign in Russia against Croatia in Group D in June 16.

The Super Eagles had the first big chance in the game on six minutes through Victor Moses but his well-taken free-kick close to the edge of the Czechs box was saved by Tomas Vaclik in goal.

In the 19th minute Francis Uzoho made a superb save as he palmed a volley away from range inside the box.

Czech took the lead in the 25th minute through Kalas who slammed in a rebound after Uzoho had saved an initial header from a cross.

The Super Eagles almost drew level on 28 minutes but John Ogu did not connect properly with a corner.

Marek Suchy should have doubled Czech Republic’s lead on 30 minutes following a mix-up in the Eagles’ defence only to hit his effort just over the bar with Uzoho to beat.

The Eagles responded a minute later through Odion Ighalo but his left-foot shot was palmed away for a corner by the Czech keeper.

In the 36th minute, the Super Eagles went close again as Ndidi tried a long range strike which the Czech keeper palmed away for a corner.

At the start of the second half the Super Eagles made a substitution with Tyronne Ebuehi replacing Shehu Abdullahi.

The game was halted in the 60th minute due to heavy rain.

On resumption 10 minutes later, the Super Eagles almost took the lead but the Czech keeper stopped a header from a corner from sneaking in.

The Super Eagles continued to create chances and went close on two occasions but Moses and Bryan Idowu missed very good opportunities.

After weathering the Super Eagles pressure Czech Republic almost went 2-0 up on 80 minutes but Uzoho made two good saves to keep the scoreline at 1-0.

  • I believe in miracle! I remember very well, en route France ’98. we lost 0-1 to Germany, lost 0-3 to former Yugoslavia, 1-5 to Netherlands. Our 1st game was against Spain being tipped to win the world cup then, infact they had not lost in 32 games! The result Nigeria 3-Spain 2. But friendlies aside, seems our tactics are not working, we need to score GOALS!!!!!
    I believe in miracle!

One thing is clear from all these games. All other formations besides 3-5-2 used by Rohr doesn’t work. I don’t understand why doesn’t get it. If he try any other nonsense formations in the world cup he should be fired.

  • Abdulrazak 6 months ago

How do you know what is best when you don’t try other formations during exhibition games? When should Rohr try out other tactics, during the world cup proper? Anyways, how many points did the Super Eagles drop today?  Please, let’s learn from history. We shall do well at the world cup.

    • Israel Akinlawon 6 months ago

Thank you my brother. God bless you. People don’t realize that GR is deceiving our world Cup opponents with these friendlies. They would be dumbfounded when Superr Eagles bring their joker at the world Cup. To buttress your point, When we won all our pre world Cup friendlies in 2002, we crashed out in the first round with only one point. God bless NAIJA.

  • Naija Man 6 months ago

Let us just play our 3 group games and return home. Period.

  • It’s over, from my observation, this team won’t get a point at the worldcup..we are loosing the 3 game, this is rubbish..they are so bad and it’s too late to put this team into shape before next week..

  • Abdulrazak 6 months ago

Come the final whistle in our match against Croatia on June, 16th and victory plus three points in the kitty for Nigeria and all the doomsday prophets and naysayers would flood this forum and start their ‘I told you so’ stories.
WE SHALL DO WELL IN RUSSIA.

wasn’t a bad performance but Rhor should know dat Ighalo is not a threat to any defence.

start Simmy and see the team score goals.

my overall rating of their performance is 90%

    • You are a very generous assessor. I will surely like to je your student. Even when I fail I know you go dash me 80%

        Kikiii…..
Deir performance was d worst so far,, dey really broke my heart but as a true fan up eagles ….

What a team! Can’t defend set pieces and can’t make use of same! The players lack skills, except for Iwobi and that’s why they are never comfortable on the ball. As usual, we will correct our mistakes even when our opening game is already knocking on the door. It seems we played our best game in the friendly against Argentina in November last year when the boys were full of running and precise finishing. Looking forward to a miracle at the world cup. Painfully enough, this is the best preparations any Nigerian senior team has ever had before the world cup.

    • Chima E Samuels 6 months ago

Spot on they lack skills that is why they can hold and complete passes like other advance teams… If we talk Nigerians will come crying that we are critics smh this is a clown in the making we are there to wear Jersey that’s all I know

  • K Baba 6 months ago

This team is very shambolic when it comes to defending set pieces and the crosses from the players especially Idowu were very poor. I will advice they play the 5-3-2 formation. Also, we ca’t expect too much from the players. We need to be honest, we are not good enough. Forget about all the hype. if we don’t improve, we will ‘try’ at the world cup, maybe coming from behind like we did against England but not getting there. Its time for the boys to focus and work very hard especially victor moses, i have ben unimpressed with his performances so far.

  • Still don’t know why Rohr keeps using Sehu ahead of Ebuehi. as for the match i don’t want to dwell much on the friendly match. Spain hammered Argentina 6-1 and the same Spain were force to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland at home. At least we have know the weak areas to work on now. It seems the players are playing safe and doesn’t want to get injury also the coach might not want to expose his tactics yet.

  • Please shout it out loud for all doom sayers to hear: “NIGERIA WILL DO WELL IN RUSSIA!” Nuff said!!

  • u don’t need to watch any of the March @van, dt is ur opinion. sure bet bro, Either we qualify from d group or not… naija for life…….

  • The Problem Super Eagles Always And Will Continue To Have Is Defence, A Winning Team Possess Solid Defence, So If Nigeria Have A Strong Defence, We Won’t Concede Easily, Also I Think Ighalo Is Not A Threat To Any Defence, They Start With Simmy. Thank You

  • Me i said it that ighalo will not score.

    Gernot rohr rating 1 10
For starting wrong players. constant using of ighalo the short one, 20 appearances with just 4 goals.

    Shehu the juju.
and wrong formations. without looking for prophecies
we all know formation that best for us 3 5 2

  • Rohr is a very calculating coach, most likely he doesn’t want to reveal his main tacics which is understandable because Croatia has being seriously spying on us and not hiding it. With that said if we don’t stop going down one or 2 goals before waking up in matches we will have an early exit. I strongly believe there are players that could have added alot of bite to the team but rohr skipped on them because he wants to remain loyal to those that qualified the team. It’s well!! God help us in Russia, I’m done analyzing the team, let the games begin and hopefully we do well…..

  • Ogie samuel 6 months ago

Its time for them to be focus and stay away from social media its seems they are playing under pressure,I still believe in the team, underrating naija at the world cup is at ur own peril,be warned

  • @ van and Lucky Ukhun because they lost their friendly matches does that means they can not do well? of what use is winning all the friendly matches and fumble at the wold cup proper. It wasn’t a bad match they played well at least they were able to string passes together and that shows cohesiveness they just need to work on certain areas like set pieces, man marking and also not conceding an early goal so as not to put them on unnecessary stress of coming back into the game. They need to play as a black nation as well as in physical

  • Too late to cry. Kelechi NWAKALI and his brother Chinebere Nwakali. Not forgetting Usman Mohammed should have being in this world cup squad. The midfield would have been creative than what we see now. Mikel Obi is too fat now. If you watched Super Eagle Team B vs Atletico Madrid, you will agreed with me with these guys. The ball is in Rohr’s court!

  • Festus oyibo 6 months ago

better to loose ur friendlies, than to loose ur competitive matches at the world cup proper!

  • Bomboy 6 months ago

Our failure is not because of wrong formation or the absence of any player. The Super Eagles are simply not pulling their weight.
These are my humble observations (and they leave a sour taste in my mouth):

    i) No player has been outstanding. Iwobi showed some flashes of briliance but that was all.
ii) We are very poor at set pieces. Once again, the goal we concededtodaywas via a set piece. And the sad part of it is that when it is our turn to take these set pieces, we don’t take advantage of them.
iii) We are goal shy. We lost today’s game, not because we conceded a goal, but because we failed to score. Even when we are dominating the game, all we do is kick the ball around.
    v) We start our fight late. We play the first half like it is a warm up.
vi) Poor attitude. The hunger and belief isnt there. The only exception once again is Iwobi and maybe one or two others.
vi) Victor Moses is a shadow of himself. He got the ball at his feet but failed to shoot. Even a cripple would have scored that one.

Despite the above, I am still holding to the hope that the SE will take charge at the World Cup, but I am not going to put my money on it. These are players so full of potential but they dont seem to be giving 100%. Are they reserving their best for the World Cup proper? Only time will tell.

  • Moses is seriously missing the compliment of the other Moses (Simon). His absence seems to have diminished Victor’s impact. Rememember Emenike and Ideye? Balogun is too slow, maybe age telling on him. Iwobi is good, but still raw. slow decision making, dilly-dallies on the ball for too long.

But the biggest flaw is that we have no ‘teeth’ going forward. Ighalo is good, but not wow! You only see flashes of him once in every 40 minutes, which is poor for any team hoping to score goals. Transition from the back to the midfield to the forward is still uncoordinated.

Shehu should swap the bench for Tyronne. Full stop. The Czechs were too agressive and desperate to get a win after their loss against the Aussies.

I’m going to watch our matches with cautious hope. Maybe that’s a good thing, because we can all be pleasantly surprised if the tide turns in our favour as we have lowered expectations. I hear current world champions, Germany too lost all their friendlies going to Russia 2018 and yet they’re not freaking out. So, let’s keep fingers crossed. Something tells me Croatia will not beat Nigeria, and my hunch is hardly wrong. It will be 2-1 to Nigeria, 3-0 against Iceland and 1-1 against Argentina.

  • onyeagoro Johnson Chima 6 months ago

Nigeria will do well and advance from the group. Don’t worry about the friendlies because “ALL THINGS WORKETH TOGETHER FOR GOOD FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN GOD…..” the results of these friendlies will act as a deception to the opposing teams in the group, mark my word!

  • Adekunle 6 months ago

Pls do they sell groundnut in Russia? I’m just wondering what super eagles of Nigeria is going to do in Russia

  • Edoman 6 months ago

Let me shout on top of my voice. STOP USING ODION IGHALO. In all the games Ighalo played #9 for Nigeria, he only scored one goal. With all opportunities given to Rohr, if we fail to get out from the group stage , the couch must go. This bloody couch stick to players that have no business playing for a national team. Why. Are we to assume that money have changed hand under the table ? Then, tell me why Ighalo will continue to play # 9 role when he has nothing to offer for it. My humble prediction today is, we will return home without a win from Russia. Siasia will then be called upon to rescue us from the abbess. Mark my words.

  • Michael 6 months ago

From what I have seen so far, I think my preferred formation is 3-4-1-2 and this is my lineup…..defenders: Balogun, ekong, ogu.  Wingbacks: Ebuehi, Idowu.  Midfielders: Mikel and Ndidi.  Attacking midfielder: Iwobi.  Strikers: Moses and Simmy.   This formation will make us dynamic in our approach. What this tactics offers is that when we are attacking, iwobi can easily join forces with the strikers and that will make it three man striker against our opponents and will also creat room for the wingbacks to provide some width for the team while Mikel and Ndidi may also push just a little bit upfront.
When defending, Mikel and Ndidi will be able to move swiftly to their positions in the midfield( this in my opinion is better than what the coach is doing at the moment which is playing iwobi behind Mikel) and then iwobi can easily move into the midfield to give helping hand.
With the above analysis, it means we will have 5 players to defend at any moment even when there is a counter attack and thus provide cover for the wingbacks who will also fall back to perform their defending duties ASAP.
Furthermore, with this formation, we can easily bring Moses to RWB position when things are going tough to help initiate attack from our own half of the pitch…..remember he has been playing in that position in Chelsea for over 2 years and then we may bring in another striker in the stead of Ebuehi…..
    God bless Nigeria
    Up SE.

    • Fantastic analysis in MY opinion, the only suggestion I will add is that we play victor Moses as a LWB,most people won’t like it but he plays a RWB role for Chelsea am sure he will do it better than idowu or elderson. People might say he may not be willing to play as a wingback but he needs to know that his role is actually as a winger cutting in from the left and shooting with his right as he will have defensive cover in Mikel and ogu but he must perform his defensive duties when 9ja is under pressure as he does for chelsea weekin weekout. My other suggestion is to play iheanacho and simy upfront. The reason being there is no better finisher in d box for the present SE team than Iheanacho and I believe he will come thru in the big stage. Mikel should play as a DM alongside Ndidi as the 2 DMs this is d role he plays regularly for his Chinese club and when he was at Chelsea so doing it again won’t pose a problem. He can help organize the midfield as well as d defense. He is very good with d ball and a calming influence on the team. With him there SE can easily pass d ball from d back and he can easily initiate attack. Believe me with the players suggested we will score and be resolute defensively. It may be too late to implement by d coach though. My opinion anyway, people are welcome to disagree but no insults please. We all love SE and are praying they succeed regardless of what some people might say. If 9ja scores everyone will shout GOAL including the so called doom or naysayers. Believe in your team there is no other team for a true SE fan to support. Real talk

  • MY OBSERVATION
I believe the team will still qualify from their group. If we are going to play 3-5-3 then we need someone who can compliment Ebuehi from the left wing to give the right passes and crosses from the left. Twice Brian had the opportunity to lay a good pass to Ighalo but he was selfish that was in the second half and that was why the coach replaced him with Ejiechile. Also the team will need to learn how to defend set pieces, if they can do that very well then I see them qualifying from their group. The team shuold also play the fast half like it is the second half being aggressive, making the right passes, holding on to the ball when there is need to hold on to it and releasing the ball when they need to release it. Sometime the players want to showboat and this makes them to delay in making passes

Hmm.Are our boys progressing or retro greasing? They seem to be returning closer and closer to the era of Super Chickens since they qualified for the World Cup. I only hope they will not end up embarrassing not just Nigeria but Africa. In spite of his assertions to the contrary, I make bold to say that Rohr does not yet know his first eleven.

  • Well we wil try our best and got a result at the group stage…but not to win o. but atleast to get draw wit only iceland and come back home according to gernot rohr plan.

If not why should he be playing ighalo 20 games 4 goals striker.

Gernot rohr must be fired if this plan of him work.

Na only enyeama u wish…? Rufai sef still dey o…In case u need am. Left to some people…the young shall never grow. Uzoho has been growing day by day. He’s been making an average of 4 point blank save per game. Maybe we should start looking at our defensive organization before we start crucifying the young man. This experience of a thing is over-rated. If u are good enough,u r old enough. Was it not the same experience enyeama that handed a simple cross to pogba to score in 2014 wen we were controlling the game…?

  • CHYBYKE 6 months ago

Victor Moses should not take our set-pieces ever again,he wasted so many freekicks and cornerkicks that could have resulted in a goal…Our defence is as shaky as ever before, they simply failed to clear the danger and Kalas punished them..They were simply shambolic to watch

    Hello guys
I patiently read all d opinions and I must say u all av spoken like a tru naija fan..  U spoke dis way, wheda negative or positive, cos u love naija. Some even took all d whole time to type just like am doing cos u love naija.  We all love naija.

    Now les talk football.

Do u remember d first eleven in d World Cup Qualifiers? U will agree with me dat d current 1st eleven is an upgrade. We now av a calm uzoho, a more mobile idowu, a nice combative ogu, and owing who is now into d first eleven..  And of cos, an array of players to choose from d bench like simy, especially, Joel, iheanacho, musa, and d likes.. U will agree that these are all players with individual professional quality. Almost d same set of players dat qualified u from d once tagged group of death dat contained Cameroon, Zambia,  and Algeria.. D issue with d SE is not dt dey are not passionate or nonchalant, its because the system av changed, d stage av changed. Don’t forget, all dis matches that u all are using as a base for ur judgement are just exhibition matches. Dey are meant to b use to test new system, new modalities, new blends, and d likes..

Just les support dis guys, dey are even more emotional Dan u all do cos dey are d one involved in d pitch. Dey av d heart that dey represent 180million Nigerians and of cos dey won’t take we all for granted. D coaches are trying and likewise d players. Les just support. Just don’t expect dem to win d cup, just les support…  Enjoy d passion wisely…  Nd if dey spring up unimaginable surprises, wheda good or bad..  Accept it…  If dey could qualify for dis stage, den dey could do something good.

As For Victor Moses Poor Performance I Would Blame Antonio Conte He Turned Moses Into A Defender
Moses Must Have Lost His Attacking Instincts

    • Dr. Drey 6 months ago

Old story. Moses was an attacker @ liverpool, stoke and westham and he was shit…! Moses becomes a wingback in chelsea and he’s become someone to reckon with, even natural fullbacks r finding it difficult to bench him. Moses really needs to rethink his destiny and be thanking Antonio Conte for helping him to re-discover his destiny. Poor corner kicks, poor crosses, poor shooting ability. I dont even know who asked him to be taking our set-pieces. Simply put…Moses is over-rated. The earlier GR shows enough bravery to throw him bak to the wingback, the better for the SE.

  • @tequiero i agree wit u…u b good advicer.

Super eagle was once death and name super chicken, til the arrival of iheanacho and iwobi even osimhen,”that’s wen we begin to win match
Iheanacho single handedly games for us such.

Kelechi lone goal vs mali “win

    Kelech goal vs luxembourg win

    Kelech assist vs egypt draw

    Rohr era
Kelech lone goal vs tanzania win

Kelech and iwobi goals v zambi win.etc

Because of these young players people began to believe in super eagle.
but ever since they were overlook and axed from starting line up we are having dificulties.

If rohr can try iwobi and iheanacho upfront just like argentina u wil se the improvement of super eagle again

  • Me I don wake up, I no de dream again Lai lai.
My own na sit down dey watch.
I no fit bet 1kobo on this team, but am open to surprises, I doubt even though I wish they can surprise me.

This Rohr fit beat Onigbinde record for 2002.

    I tire goo.
    Nonsense.

Please if you want to crucify the players or the coach, wait for the first match against Croatia. One thing I can tell you is that our Coach knows what he is doing. He already knows his first eleven and the formations he will play against Croatia, Iceland and Argentina. Before our friendlies our opponents have been boasting they will spy on us while playing all our friendly matches. Now come to think of it. If you were to be our coach, would you use the players and the formation against Croatia in friendly matches for Croatia to see. I dont think so.Thats why our Coach just joggles the players in these friendly matches. It will make it difficult for our opponents to decode us. Just wait until 16th June for the match against Croatia. Believe me you will see a different eagles. Its only 10 days away.

    my starting xi
    Uzoho
    Ebuehi
    Victor
    Leon
    Ekong
    Ndidi
    Mikel
    Ogu
    Iwobi
    Musa
    Ighalo

    in this set up,
Victor LWB, to support attack when neccessary, he can not fail.
Mikel HMD, to screen the attack and deffence he does that better.
Ndidi and Mikel, can always cover for Ebuehi and Victor when they venture forward.
Attack and counter attack Ighalo and Musa, with finishing job.
Iwobi to play behind the two forward.
This is what I observed from the performance of the players. If we must get result.

all analysis here are all correct, but in addition one thing has always been obvious with d Nigerian team over years or can I say African teams. our weakness is defending Set pieces and taking advantages of Set pieces.. Europeans teams know this and they exploit we Africans greatly with it. its has always been obvious just that we never took cognisance of it. anytime we play in Africa its not always obvious because most African teams don’t use it as tactics , only the east Africans like the Egyptians, Tunisian etc that uses it. We lost out against France by failure to defend set piece corner scored by pogba last World cup. Argentina speed us 1st with freekick by Messi.
Most of our worldcup series played with Europeans they scored us with set pieces . Bulgaria did d same, Sweden, England etc. if we can master defending or avoid giving out set pieces as well as proper individual marking and most importantly this team need to discover its goals scoring form. each player shld master d act of scoring goals from any angles . a team that does not discover his goals scoring form is doomed. I can see improvement in d team generally.
Better team play, cohesion is gradually coming back but much is needed to be done withing this few days or else 1st flight back to Africa..

It is interesting that over 50% believe Nigeria will WIN the World Cup. There are those who say the friendlies are being played to deceive the true quality of the team. If they crash out in the group stages, I am sure some will say the team is deceiving to get ready for 2022. So far this team has been sub-standard. I a hope to be proved wrong in predicting they will play only 3 games in Russia.

3,5,2 is the formation for me. Balogun, troost ekong and omeruo at the back. Ebuehi and idowu as wing backs, ndidi and ogu as defensive midfielders, mikel a little further to create chances, then uptop iwobi and iheanacho to lead the attack
