TARIBO: KESHI DESERVES NEW DEAL

TARIBO: KESHI DESERVES NEW DEAL

–Former Super Eagles defender Taribo West tells SL10.ng that the election of Pinnick Amaju will bring positive change to Nigerian football as he urge the new board to offer Super Eagles Coach Stephen Keshi contract extension. He also believes that Nigeria will feature at the Morocco AFCON.

Let’s start by talking about the election of Amaju Pinnick as the new NFF President. You were there on the day and you know the man. What do you think Nigerians should be expecting from the new NFF board?

I believe it will be a new dispensation; it’s like a fresh revolution that has just started. He has ideas and incredible concepts in football administration. It is a new era and we also look forward to how he will solve the issues that have bedeviled Nigerian football for years. He also has to give active roles to the practitioners of the game, both the present and past ones. But I think with him coming as the President of the NFF, I think he will be the Joshua that will take us to the promise land.

How do you think this will impact on Nigeria’s chances against Sudan in the AFCON qualifiers this month because the controversies during the first phase was believed to have contributed to Nigeria’s solitary point from a possible six?

Yes. It will be a great advantage for us because the problems really affected the players in the games against Congo and South Africa. It will be a morale booster and an advantage for the players, unlike the psychological disadvantage they had in the first games. I think it will help us see out the next two games and I see positive things.

How do you think with a new board in the NFF things will change for the better as the Super Eagles play Sudan next week?

Yes, it’s a great advantage. Psychologically the problems at the NFF affected the boys. This new development will motivate the team and most importantly see Nigeria through the games with Sudan.

As regards Keshi’s future, do you think he should be allowed to continue or should the NFF seek another expert?

I think Keshi should be given another chance, the last twenty years hasn’t been easy. Nigeria didn’t do well at the AFCON but he led the team to lift the trophy. He has done better than every other indigenous coaches and that only shows he’s got something working well for him. I strongly feel Keshi should be retained considering that Amaju Pinnick is coming in, there will soon be a new look Super Eagles that will take Nigeria to that level Nigerians want to see the Super Eagles.

During your time in the national team, we had lots of quality defenders but it looks like we don’t have such quality again in the Super Eagles, are you not worried about this?

Hmmmmm, yeah, I’m worried but I think Keshi is equal to the task. He is a strong defender but to be realistic, the generation has changed but he is playing with the best option he has. I must say that there’s a lot of quality in the Golden Eaglets that won the FIFA World Cup in UAE and i feel some of them should be given a chance in the senior national team.

What advice do you have for the new NFF president?

Focus, commitment and discipline. What I saw and heard from him during the election process tells more about the quality he’ll bring to the table.

The Super Eagles got to the round of 16 at the World Cup but the same team having at least 70% of those that made the trip to Brazil lost at home and struggled in South Africa during the first round of qualifiers, what do you think about that?

This is an attack; it comes every now and then. Especially, when we are about to take part in the World Cup, so I think it has come and gone.

So you mean Nigeria will qualify for the Nations Cup?

Yes, Nigeria will qualify. Though, we are walking on a tight rope but I’m optimistic Nigeria will qualify for the Morocco 2015.

Keshi said recently that he’s using what he has but does that mean Nigeria doesn’t have enough talents for the national team or is it a case of him not looking enough?

I know every coach has his own kind of philosophy and I believe the way the domestic league has been managed can even discourage a coach to go out to search for talents. It’s not that he is lazy but I believe that now that Amaju Pinnick who understands proper development of the game is the NFF boss, a change is about to be experienced.

You mentioned earlier that the Golden Eaglets class of 2013 has a lot of quality in them and one player that easily comes to mind is Kelechi Iheanacho, do you think the young man deserves a call up to the Super Eagles now?

Yes, I agree totally because the Eagles have not been so creative lately especially at the last World Cup and AFCON qualifying matches we played. So because of this, I think Iheanacho must be invited to the Super Eagles to fight for a position, and every other young player coming through that have shown they have what it takes. Mikel has been doing fine, but not enough creatively so I think Iheanacho must be called up to the team.

Thank you very much pastor…

God bless you.

Taribo West thanks for your service to Nigeria. You did great during your playing days. I strongly beleive you are doing Nigeria a disservice by saying Keshi deserves another chance. Keshi has already said if he remains coach he will not invite Iheanacho, Ike Uche and Martins. These 3 players are very strong possible solutions to the problem departments in the Super Eagles.

I am saying Keshi is not a decent Coach, but Nigerians performance has diminished an gone down hill recently, yet Keshi refuses to invite the players that can solve Nigeria’s problems. Keshi dishonesty and bizare invitation policy is another big big problem. The last list he released is a shame to Nigerian Football. Even if Nigeria wins 5-2 in sudan like we did Against Algeria in 2005, Nigeria’s problems will remain if Keshi remains in Charge.

Taribo you cannot change the character of a man at 52 years old. Keshi cannot and will not change if funny dishonest practices and selection policy. Nigeria Needs a fresh start. New Administrations and a quality competent and honest coach.

  • If I say you @Benue is a failed person, it may seem am been rude, someone who had played the game for so long, is Taribo West, Keshi, name them, and you single out some players because Keshi refused to invite them, who is Ike Chukwu Uche, who s Kelechi, who is Martins? These players have played for Nigeria and nothing was produced, did Martins not play and play to the extent that the department almost became his own, its for Emenike now,did Uche not flop at the last Nations Cup? Kelechi will get his time, its only in Nigeria will all want to rush any talent spotted, Kelechi will play for the Super Eagles and he will even start boycotting some matches, because his time will come, but now i can tell you that kid is still learning, and who is talking about ROOKIES VICTOR IKEPBA said KESHI invited rookies because they play in CHINA, and NORWAY, was MIKEL not is NORWAY when SAMSON SIASIA invited them to FINLAND? listen all i have to say NIGERIANS are the problem of NIGERIA, what have KESHI done to you haters, if your players where paid them allowances you think FRANCE WILL BEAT NIGERIA? How is it KESHI’S FAULT, if NIGERIA NFF was in good hand you think those lads will not beat CONGO, as a fan i was scared that will may be banned, so lets leave this man alone, he has given us peace and pride, and a nice man from my own point of view, MIKEL will forever be successful because he listens to coaches instructions, and thats is why he will everly remain in CHELSEA, like him or hate him,ask GUS HINDINK, ASK CARLO ANCELLOTI, ASK ROBERTO DI’MATEO, ALSO ASK the SPECIAL ONE, we need to encourage the lad he may not be giving us what will want, but KESHI said already he is manageing what we have,no players again like OKOCHA,KANU,ETC. KESHI HATERS LEAVE HIM ALONE, and let there be continuity in the dressing room, those players love him, and want to play for him.

@Presh and @Benue after reading your comments I think you both made some good points.

@Presh my issue with your comments is that you think those saying Keshi must go hate Keshi or have something against Keshi. Personally I am a strong supporter of Keshi as a coach and since his playing days, but the time has come to put sentiment aside. I love Keshi, but Keshi needs to go and he MUST go.

On what basis is Keshi using Nigeria’s public funds to invite Aaron Samuel (Guangzhou R & F, China); Sunday Emmanuel (SV Grödig, Austria), Ugonna Anyora (FK Haugesund, Norway), to the national team? Keshi is the coach so He does not have invite Iheanacho or any other player, but the 3 players above do not add any value to the national team and they do not posses the quality to wear the Jersey of the super eagles.

Anyway you look at it Nigeria has won only 1 game of 12 games played over the last 1 year. This is a very poor run of results. You add these poor results to his questionable invitation policy and the problems become bigger. The Major reason Nigeria Lost vs France is the Midfield collapse when Keshi’s boy Ruben Gabriel was introduced into the game. Most Nigerians said Ruben’s world cup selection was questionable and undeserved. Eventually that wrong decision cost Nigeria the game vs France. Keshi has not learned his lesson. He is repeating the same mistake over again with questionable invitations when our qualification AFCON 2015 hangs in the balance.

    • The moment I saw the World Cup list, I knew we were bound to fail. I wasn’t surprised we advanced to the knock-out stage by luck. As the saying goes your team is as good as your bench.. this will always be true. too many mediocre players made that list.. And the trend has not changed, which is why the team has not made significant progress since winning the AFCON. Keshi knows what he is doing.. man must chop sha.. abi no be naija we dey?

@SoccerInNigeria, please don’t underrate Aaron Samuel (Guangzhou R & F, China); Sunday Emmanuel (SV Grödig, Austria), Ugonna Anyora (FK Haugesund, Norway) because of the club and country they play. I remembered Friday Elahor and Uche Okechukwu was playing in Denmark for Brondby IF, when Westernof invited them during the Nation cup in Algeria 1990. I can tell you that these kind of players that play in smaller leagues abroad are more hungrier than this so call big names in Europe. I can mention more and more of them that excel in the super eagles that was playing lower division. Ruben Agboola was playing for swansea in lower division but justified his inclusion then. Late Yekini played lower division but remained our best striker, he does not matter where you play but just deliver that is all we need. If you like play in Vietnamese league but deliver when you are invited. The truth is that big names don’t play football this days. Finidi George started playing for eagles when he was with sharks of Port-hartcourt and he outplayed all the foreign players.

    • I have confidence that Westerhof may have seen them play or at least has a scout doing their job. I can’t say the same about Keshi. These days we don’t need such scouts because we can sit in front our computers and check player stats, better yet, stream live matches they are involved in. We can’t be deceived in this internet age. If you are warming the bench in a third tier league, I would like to know how you found your way into the Super Eagles. Maybe Keshi has scouts that comb those leagues. let him tell us because I am confident he didnt see recent clips of the matches those players were involved in

    @Marsh thanks for your comments

I have football coaching certifications/qualification from two different continents. I have watched 2 of the 3 players i have criticized. With all due respect to you, I am not arguing or debating with you about the quality of these players. I am telling you very very clearly. These players DO NOT have the quality to represent Nigeria at this time.

Keshi knows the reasons why he invited these players. From my assessment of these players his reasons cannot be for footballing reasons. I do not want to over flog this topic, but these players don’t have the quality to solve the problem areas of the Super Eagles.

Like I said earlier I love Keshi, but all sentiments aside Keshi Must Go. He is taking Nigerian football in the wrong direction.

My own word to the new president NNF and his board is that to give keshi secod chance to lead super eagle to AFCON 2015

  • Thank you Taribo. But I beg to differ. Nigeria needs to move on from Ke$hi. He will never change. It’s just who he is. Look at his track record. It speaks for itself. We were destined to win the AFCON 2013 and those who think Ke$hi had anything to do with it should revisit the tournament and see how everything conspired in Nigeria’s favor. In the last 11 competitive games, this mafia thug has won only one game and we all know Nigeria should actually have lost that game….. the Bosnia game.

  • Even if we beat Sudan home and away, we are supposed to, so it should not be a measuring stick for giving Ke$hi a new contract. We are in the weakest group of the AFCON 2015 qualifiers just like we were in the Brazil 2014 WC Qualifiers and Ke$hi just can’t get his team to play football the Nigerian way. So, we are now reduced to struggling with the likes of Malawi, Kenya, Namibia, Congo and South Africa (their U-23 team by the way) and then rejoicing if we beat Sudan? Seriously? People are not happy with Ke$hi and as long as he is coach, the team will never do well. It is just that simple. He is too arrogant, selfish, proud and vindictive. What he did to Ike Uche was terrible. How can you play god with somebody’s career/life like that? He (Ke$hi) did worse to Westerhoff and the man still took him to the WC in 1994 when he (Ke$hi) was already pretty much past his prime and had no business being there. God does not like wicked people and He is against Ke$hi.

I totally disagree with pastor Teribo west, first of all let me use this medium to thank west For his effort during his playing days, am sorry to say Kechi is not a tactical and quality coach, a coach who Have coached a country For over 4 _5 years now and still yet cannot identify his first 11 What are we talking about! On every competition he introduce new faces For over 5 years now we are still rebuilding. Why? For me Oooooooooooooooooooh as long as that job is with Kechi dont expect anything I know so many of us Will say he won the nation cup yes he did, but that doesn’t mean we were the only better team in that tornament burkina fashsso we played in the final were also a Good team who didn’t losed any game until final we Just been privilege since then can anybody list Nigeria first 11 For the national team? We must change Kechi. Lets flarh back to the days of bornfry joe and clement Westerfor we have team Good team first and second 11 I think is high time we bring the foreign experters.

I THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR COMMENTS AND CONTRIBUTION. FOR IN AS MUCH AS I LIKE KESHI AND HIS ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR AS THE COACH. I STILL BELIEVE HIS LACKS THE ABILITY TO MOVE NIGERIAN FORWARD IN THE THIS GAME. ONE HE IS BIAS IN HIS SELECTION, TALKS TOO MUCH BY CRITICIZING HIS PAYER AND NEVER TAKE BLAME WHEN THINGS IS NOT GOING WELL WITH HIS TEAM BUT TAKE THE BLAME TO THE PLAYER WHILE HE EXONERATE HIMSELF.SORRY TO SAT KESHI LACK THE QUALITY OF A LEADER BUT A CONFUSIONIST , KESHI KNOWS IT ALL AND NOBODY CAN GIVE ADVICE TO HIM, BUSY MAKING UNGUARDED COMMENT ON THE MEDIA ABOUT HIS EMPLOYERS AND PLAYERS ETC.

I THINK IS IT TIME FOR KESHI TO GO LET US MOVE ON WITH OUR FOOTBALL. INVITING PLAYER ON SENTIMENT ETC I NO LONGER BELIEVE IN KESHI SO HE MUST GO NOW. HE HAS TRIED SO LET HIM GO ELSE WHERE AND CONTINUE.

  • Dronestrike 4 years ago

@SoccerinNigeria – you hit the nail on the head. Those 3 players are clearly NOT the best Nigeria has to offer. Keshi is running a ‘pay-to-play’ scheme here and its an absolute disgrace that some Nigerians can even defend Keshi on this.
He needs to go, as Nigeria football needs to move forward.

  • KESHI IS UNFORGIVING. I WAS A VERY STRONG SUPPORTER OF KESHI WHEN HE WAS EMPLOYED. I ALSO SUPPORTED HIM FOR NOT INVITING UCHE FOR WHAT WE ALL SAW HE DID IN SOUTH AFRICA. I THOUGHT IT IS TIME TO MOVE ON. HE IS STILL BENT TO DO HIS WISH. BUT THEN SUNDAY MBAH MATTER CAME UP. SUNDAY MBAH WAS A WARRI WOLVES PROPERTY. PINNICK DEFINITELY IS NOT HAPPY WITH THE ROLE KESHI PLAYED IN PUTTING MBAH WHERE HE IS TODAY-FRANCE 3RD TIER LEAGUE. APART FROM THAT PINNICK IS A FOOTBALL ANALYST. HE IS ALSO AN AVID FAN OF ARSENAL FC. HE KNOWS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A NATIONAL TEAM PLAYER. KESHI HAS DISAPPOINTED A LOT OF NIGERIANS WITH HIS SELECTION. AMAJU PINNICK, THE NEW NFF BOSS WILL NOT RENEW HIS CONTRACT. UNLESS, UNLESS, UNLESS DR EMMA UDUAGHAN THE GOVERNOR OF DELTA STATE COME INTO THE MATTER AS THESE TWO GUYS ARE HIS BOYS AND THEY ARE ALL DELTANS. IF NOT KESHI IS GONE.

  • Samuel 4 years ago

I wonders that Keshi is building team since 2012 and still yet he didn’t yet having a standing team for Nigerian to boast of, for how long Keshi will build team? Keshi is a joker by saying he his building team all time, Keshi likes invited players who he can collect “Eguje” from their hands or players that he can sell to Europe, he didn’t know anything about coaching job, he just fortunate won nation cup with collective effort as Ikpeba said, Keshi should go and let Siasia back to his job, Siasia boys play good game during his time, it was just that some people in the Glass house doesn’t like him that was why they rebelled against him by using the people like Osase and Mikel to play worst during our last game against Guinea in order to loose his job by then which everyone knows that, therefore New NFF should call Siasia back…. Up Naija.. Up Eagles… Up Nff.. Up Siasia..

  • thankGod 4 years ago

i think keshi as done his best, siasia should b called back to his post bicos during his time we played good football pls.siasia has all it takes to make eagles fly.
