Tearful Mikel: Super Eagles Gave Our Best Vs Argentina

Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi believes his team gave their very best in their 2-1 defeat to Argentina in their final Group D fixture at the Russia 2018 World Cup, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Mikel starring in his second FIFA World Cup said tearfully after the game: “It’s what it is. Nothing to say. We conceded two goals, we did everything we could.
“I think my team did everything we could, we stood our ground.”
Marcos Rojo’s late winner four minutes from time gave Argentina the three points.

    To God be the glory.

Can’t Nigerians learnt there lessons ni? This coach has bn biased before now bah.

All I can say now is thank you Mr. Rohr and Mr. Ighalo. Hopefully, both of you can leave us alone now?

The future is bright right? From 2002 world cup to 2018? And from 2018 world cup to 2022, the future would still bright then because, coach Rohr is building the team for 2022 world cup ABI?

Ighalo would be our main striker comes in 2022?

Nigerians stop deceiving yourselves. What I have seen so far, we have a long way to go in this nation except we faced the truth.

However, we still have great players in Nigeria and abroad but the main problem we are facing is
    “corruption and politics”

If we can solve the problem, our country would be great again. Therefore, the only person we should blame is Mr. Rohr and he should be fired right away because, he would never have a sound team.

Imagine Simy were sitting on the bench throughout the world cup while Ighalo given chances upon chances, in the end, Mr. Rohr and his son Ighalo sent us parking. I said it here that Ighalo has a godfather behind him and Someone attacked me wrongly and now, who is feeling the pains,??? Nigerians.

Nigerians, this is the time we all need to wake up and ask yourselves wish way forward. Mr. Rohr may decides to go back to Germany or France but do we have anywhere to go??????? Remember no place like home!

So painful coach Rohr wasted the golden opportunity that God gave to us in this tournament.
    God bless Nigeria!!!

If you have nothing meaningful to contribute, kindly keep quite. Rohr have done a very good job, had ighalo scored would we be where we are now? who thought we could qualify for the world cup? u I guess?.Rohr was the best suddenly he should be fired again and we start rebuilding all over again with a new coach and new tactics yet expect result in a short period of time, can this guy tell me since the German Coach, have been on his Job, Iceland Coach and France Coach, I guess you don`t know? pls find out from google then you will understand that success in being built and not by magic or miracle like many Nigerian believe. Rohr should stay and continue with the team remember Nation cup qualifier is just around. NFF well done this boys in the next 2yrs again together playing will beat any team. painful but gave their best. GOD BLESS SUPER EAGLES

I concur with you….. most people here are just ranting unreasonably. Nobody supported SE from the very beginning of the qualifiers all of a sudden the tide turned. VAR should be scrapped, If 6 persons will not see a penalty. Then it’s a shame on FIFA and the purpose VAR

      • Exactly that is the truth

They played their hearts out. Argentina played another psychological game with the SuperEagles. Our inexperience young team fought gallantly. I think we were robbed. Ighalo had two glorious chances to kill the game, but he missed them as we knew it already. It was a poor game management by the gaffer, he should’ve made the substitutions before Argentina scored the second goal. However, Rohr did a good job with these young team and I believe they will continue to evolve with continuity.

    WE WERE ROBBED!!!
THAT WAS A CLEAR AND CONVINCING VIDEO REPLAY HAND BALL BY MACHERANO. THE WHOLE WORLD SAW THAT.
ANOTHER GOAL WOULD HAVE PUT NIGERIA UP BY 2-1. IF ARGENTINA TIED IT AT 2-2 THEN NIGERIA ADVANCES TO THE PLAYOFFS.
    WE WERE ROBBED!!!
AT THE END OF THE GAME WE SAW MESSI AT MIDFIELD SAYING TO THE REF & CREW, “THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU”
BECAUSE THE REF KNOWINGLY DID NOT CALL
THE 2ND PENALTY KICK. REF DID NOT HAVE THE BALLS TO CALL A 2ND PENALTY ON ARGENTINA. WHAT A WHIMP!!!

NFA/NFF MUST FILE A GRIEVANCE REPORT WITH FIFA TECHNICAL COMMITTEE TO NEVER ALLOW THAT REF TO CALL ANY NIGERIA INTERNATIONAL GAME EVER.

This ref called many infractions against Nigeria, and less against Argentina. He failed to send Macherano off the field to clean up all that blood on his face, and to cover up the upper face skin cut. That was against FIFA Rules.

The video review was exactly created for this type of controversy. Why the hell even use it, if it is going to be clearly ignored. Is there a conspiracy  to keep Nigeria, and some teams from progressing to the quarter final stage?
It seems as if there is a defined arrangent, or script that is expected to be followed. The sport commentators seemed to be pleased that the second penalty was not called. They ignored the refs call, and kept talking about Messi,Argentina, and how they should avance instead of the “Young” Nigeria  team. They kept talking about how the team is really set up for 2022. Pleeeeease!!!!! Don’t water down the fact that we were robbed of a clear penalty. We score, and  that makes it tough on Argentina with about 5 mins left in the game. The most they can do is tie it up at 2-2. A tie puts Nigeria to the next stage.
Someway, somehow we must end this bias against Nigeria, and countries not favored by FIFA elitists & hierachy.

IS IT THE REFEREE THAT HELD IGHALO LEG FROM MISSING TWO CLEAR CUT CHANCES. THE PROBLEM IS IGHALO AND OUR COACH WHO DID NOT MAKE THE RIGHT SUBSTITUTION TOWARDS THE END OF THE MATCH…….ASK YOURSELF WHY WILL ANY REASONABLE COACH TAKE IGHALO WHO COULD NOT SCORED AT WATFORD AND RELEGATED TO CHINA, TO THE WORLD CUP, WHERE HE SHOWED HIMSELF AGAIN AS -1. SO THE PROBLEM IS BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION. THE RIGHT PLAYERS ARE NOT GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY…….SHIKENAH

      Hooooo, great talk.

  • Bobo Colorado Springs 5 months ago

We were robbed, period!!.The referee knew that was a penalty, the video proved that too, the whole world saw it., but it was not given to Nigeria, ask yourselves”why?’.

  • Coach Rohr should stay on to guide this young team to success. Continuity is the word. AFCON & 2022 World Cup

which young team ni? oh u mean Ighalo? i wonder what young team u are referring to when players like Nwakali brothers were snubbed and Idowu was preferred to the lively Ebuehi…i would love to see siasia retrn as coach or himself and either Kanu or Okocha

Now that the world cup run is over for the Super Eagles what’s next; what did we learn, or how do we progress from here?
    1) We must continue to learn how to PLAY AS A TEAM. Moments today, I saw players slow on the ball. WE MUST LEARN TO PLAY WITH A SENSE OF URGENCY.
WE HAVE PROBLEMS WITH FAST TEAMS. WE CAN’T PLAY SOFT & RELAXED.  We lost a LOT OF LOOSE BALLS, OR 2ND BALLS.
DRIBBLING TOO MUCH AGAINST A BALL PRESSURE ROUGH TEAM, THAT IS NOTORIOUS FOR DIRTY/ROUGH PLAY.

    2) Regarding “Dangerous” players like Messi, have 2 players CLOSELY, and NOT LOOSELY MARKING HIM. Never let a player  like that run behind you on a give and go. I hope Coach Rohr watched Argentina group D Film Tapes against Iceland to see how they fustrated Messi. I also hoped he watched Argentina’s  loss to Croatia tape, to see how they contained Argentina.
On a corner play, your defenders must stay in front of opponents in the box, and leave no one unmarked to connect a volley into your net. Moses was a step
behind the Argentinean player who scored the 2nd goal. Where were all the regular defenders??? This lapse in defense especially  at crucial moments is what always concerns me about SE Defense. The lapse in focus, and SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. THE PLAYER ON MESSI SHOULD NOT HAVE HESITATED ON THE CHALLENGE IN THE BOX. MESSING WAS TOO FAR FROM THE BALL TO CHANGE DIRECTION. HE SHOULD HAVE PRESSURED THE BALL HARD INSTEAD OF READING MESSI’S BODY MOVEMENT. THAT EXTRA STEP BY MESSI ALLOWED THE ANGLED CROSS TO THE Opposite CORNER net. Our goalie was a step behind the shot as well. With 2 defenders on Messi, we might have had a different outcome.Iceland had 3 guys on Messi everytime  he touched the ball. Why did we think we could mark Messi with 1 defender? Poor game planning, or tactic. A lesson for future similar situations. If that was not the plan, then somehow the coach must find a way to instill game-plan discipline into the players so they can be constantly aware of the plans. NO LAPSES!!!
Against Croatia, it was clear, our Team Speed was lagging. Today, against Argentina, it was a little behind.
WE MUST STEP UP OUR TEAM SPEED WITH A SENSE OF URGENCY CONSTANTLY FOR 90 MINS NOT 80 MINS. WE MUST LEARN TO MATCH, OR EXCEED OPPONENTS SPEED OF PLAY, AND WIN THE ONE-ON-ONE battles.

    3) LEARN COMPLETE MASTERY OF THE ART OF POSSESSION. Make every possession count
Don’t  waste your passes. Finish each attack strong. No weak finish at opponent’s goal. Power of positive mental creation of expecting, and ready for the loose ball in the box to come your way. ANTICIPATE &,CONNECT QUICKLY INTO THE NET. Practice this visualization exercise as often as possible.

SHOOTERS MUST Learn to keep their head low, or down  on purpose when taking an in-step shot at goal. Some opportunities  were lost by high powerful shots sailing over the bar. Coach Rohr must work on these things.
Today, Musa was one on one with the goalie, at the corner post, and i did not see any other SE player inside the box to recieve his service.
Coach, when Musa starts a run attack, THERE MUST BE AT LEAST 1 PLAYER, 2 BETTER TO SUPPORT HIS ATTACK.
MUSA IS FAST, SO A SPEEDY PLAYER MUST RUN WITH HIM TO BE SERVICED IN THE BOX.

Mr Mikel, we left a lot on the table today. We have a lot of work still to do. We need to learn how to move forward with speed and support in the box. We need to stop dribbling too much. Pass off the ball within 3 seconds to your teammate. STOP SCREWING AROUND WITH THE BALL UNTIL YOUR OPPONENTS PRESSURE YOU TO STRIP IT AWAY.We lost many balls like that today. Make your possessions count!
You can’t score if you dont have the ball. So Mikel, I beg to differ. We could have done more.

However, I agree that ARGENTINA DID NOT BEAT US, THE REF BEAT US!!! IF THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE REFERRING TO MR MIKEL,THEN I CONCUR.

Wonderful review. That was accurate. More defensive work needs to be done; organized defense. They should please learn the Italian mode of defense of back-four style, moving together as one. They should also learn German organization and team play. There’s no way you could have scored that late goal against a German, Italian, or Camerounian team. They would have marked you out. Our players need to learn team play; they should go and watch all the goals Germany thrashed Brazil with in 2014 World Cup, see a particular goal build-up in which Kedhira had an opportunity to register his name on the goal sheet, but rather chose to pass to Mueller or so who now scored. Football is team work, not individualism. Big teams that always win World Cup build on the strength of their collective players. Look at the last goal Neymar scored in their last group match, somebody chose, unselfishly, to pass the ball to him. Our players must see beyond individual stardom. Nigeria would have been a goal up in the first half if Iheanacho had passed the ball to Musa who was unmarked. We need to build our team not to pursue individual stardom.

Thank u Mr. Rohr for the job u have done, but it is time to go!

We need a more passionate coach with some self belief, not one that keeps complaining that he has a young team that will be ready to take on the world in 2022.

As for u Pinnick, u hav to look out for a new coach if you want to keep your job. The vultures will be calling for your head now, so do the right thing!

The referee  robbed  us and our strikers  especially  Igalo  did not take its chances. Besides  the couch  did not help  matter. He fail to do the substitution  at the right time and the last 15 minutes  Argentine  were busy reading  the game  and do right substitution players  that were  tired. Well life goes  on but I hope the players, technical  crew  and NFF  must have  learned their lesson and will go back to the drawing board because  the Gernot  Rohr technical  crew were not ready for World cup right from  the beginning especially  using players in their wrong  positions  and their last match failure to substitute  at the right  time.  Haba  couch! I rest my point here.

YOU ARE CORRECT.THE PROBLEM I SEE IS ODION IGHALO WHO IS -1 TO THE TEAM. I WONDER WHY HE WAS TAKEN TO THE WORLD CUP. PLAYERS LIKE ODION IGHALO SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN TAKEN TO THE WORLD CUP. THE COACH NEEDS TO BE BLAME. WE HAVE JOHN OGU, ONAZI AND OTHERS ON THE BENCH WHO CAN COME IN TO DEFEND TOWARDS THE END OF THE MATCH. WHY DID HE BRING A DORMANT AND USELESS PLAYER LIKE ODION IGHALO. IF THE COACH CAN LEARN FROM HIS MISTAKES, HE CAN STILL CONTINUE AS THE COACH OF THE SUPER EAGLES. HOWEVER MIKEL SHOULD NEVER PLAY FOR THE NATIONAL TEAM AGAIN AND IGHALO SHOULD BE BANNED FROM THE TEAM. MIKEL SHOULD GO ON COMPULSORY RETIREMENT.YOU ARE CORRECT.THE PROBLEM I SEE IS ODION IGHALO WHO IS -1 TO THE TEAM. I WONDER WHY HE WAS TAKEN TO THE WORLD CUP. I think the team did their best but their best was not good enough. A few players were not working while others did work. Etebo, ndidi, worked fine in the midfield. Mikel didn’t work as much. He couldn’t run and that could not help us. However I think we need some changes in the team. It is time for the nwakali brothers to step into that midfield to pair with ndidi and etebo, musa Mohammed should also join the team and manage our wing etc. Mikel and onazi have done their best. Ighalo should give way for strikers like osimhen and awoniyi and so on. As for the game against Argentina, rohr should have brought in iwobi on time to support miss up front on counter. That could have helped our counter.

  • we lost gallantly, all tried their best including the coach it could be anyboby game

Henceforth when we see people like Yakubu Ighalo Agali in our future eagles let us start a rally else they will continue taking thieves like this to a major tournament and make a mockery of Nigeria. I had a sleepless night if we never had those ighalo chances I would have slept well but watching that chances he missed and seeing how he complained after missing the chance is annoying that guy ighalo is a very wicked fake person he should go far from the super eagles and render apologies to Nigeria. Ighalo is the only reason I blame Rohr but we all warned him if only the media had warned him as well he would have avoided the use of that ighalo. I’m calling for siaone to come back and he should be well treated by NFF and see the results he will bring

it is unfortunate we lost to a more experienced argentina but in my opinion the coach did not help matters, he doesn’t seems to know the potentials of the players. igalo is not a clinical finisher that will utilize slim chances but Mr Rohr been a conservative believes in him. he should have brought iwobi or simmy instead, we saw what happens when we playered the argentines in November and the friendly against England. Pls let release him and get a contemporary coach or make do with our samson siasia

    Blame everything on ighalo

  • Congratulations super Eagles for a gallant fight, although you lost due to inexperience. Let there be continuity in the technical crew and players, but let the tecnical crew widen the space for more players, let the late Stephen Keshi model be considered.Where there is equality of consideration for our local and the foreign based players.

The boys went down with their heads held up. They earned respect. I’m so happy that they made Argentina sweat…..I mean real sweat & blood. I’m sure so many Argentinians had heart attack last night. I even heard Maradona was taken to the hospital afterwards.
The match was won and lost from the bench. I cant still phantom why the coach didnt inject more fresh legs at most before the 80th minute, especially at the wings, because that was where the albiceleste were exploring when they discovered our central defence was impenetrable. At a point they had Aguero, Pavon, Hugain (all central Strikers) + Lionel messi in the middle, meza on the left and Mercado on the right…..against a tiring set of defenders who had been running all thro the match.
And i dont know if its me…but Victor Moses’ commitment to the national team is suspect. He doesnt sing the national anthem (even the likes of Balogun, idowu, ekong and ebuehi who pledged allegiance to Nigeria long after him do sing the national anthem). His demeanor all through the game last night was that of a disgruntled player and it wasnt a surprise he was no where to be found when Marcos Rojo, a central defender ghosted into the box unmarked to connect with that cross that resulted in the goal. If theres any flop of the tournament from the side of the Super Eagles…..then I’ll gladly nominate V.Moses.

The question now is where do we go from here…? NFF….over to you guys…!

  • Rohr took this team from no where to where it is today.Truth, few players deserved to be on the bench not on the pitch in that crucial match. Let give kudos to our coaching crew. There is room for improvement going forward

To those that says that the referee robbed us. Its true anyway but lets ask ourselves what stopped ighalo from scoring that goal? Do you really think if he had scored that goal then the ref can unturn it? Some of our players are not professionals at all. All this we are saying is mercy after death. Lets pray for long life and see what happens 4 years time. But in my candid opinion NFF should protest/petition fifa over that penalty that was not awarded for record purpose.
    Tnx.
