Terry, Mourinho Hail Solanke

Terry, Mourinho Hail Solanke

–Chelsea captain, coach with high praise for 17-year-old UCL debutant

John Terry said he was ‘proud’ for Dominic Solanke after the teenager made his Chelsea debut Tuesday night.

It was also a night that saw a Chelsea debut for an academy product.

Not many players have come through the Chelsea academy and been a success in recent years. In fact John Terry is probably the last one to do just that.

But Chelsea have high hopes of developing some of their current young talent into world stars.
Dominic Solanke might be just one of them.

The 17-year-old came on in the 73rd minute for Brazilian international Oscar, bringing with him a wave of excitement from Chelsea fans – and players.

In particular the captain Terry.

He has spoken of his pride at watching one of the academy make it into the group. He feels that it might inspire some of the other talents such as Jeremie Boga, Andreas Christensen and Nathan Ake to start to make their mark on a more permanent basis:

“I’m really proud of Dom. He’s a great young prospect at the club, an Academy boy. He’s been here since the age of seven and come through. It sets a precedent for the younger players and now they believe they can get an opportunity if they’re good enough and work hard enough. It’s not only good for Dom, the effect it will have throughout the Academy will be excellent.”

Meanwhile Jose Mourinho has also expressed satisfaction with Solanke’s debut.

“Solanke is at a level where we know he has the talent but he’s far away. For him it was a perfect situation; the legs were tired even before he came on, the heartbeat was there before the first run but it’s a night he will never forget,” the Special One said.

“For sure, he’s going to play many Champions League matches because he will be a good player.”
