Turkey Appoint Former Zenit Boss Mircea Lucescu As National Team Manager

Mircea Lucescu, the man who led Shakhtar Donetsk to eight Ukranian titles has been named the new manager of Turkey, replacing Fatih Terim who left the position by mutual consent in July.

Turkey are third in Group I, two points behind leaders Croatia and Iceland, and Lucescu will have his baptism of fire against Ukraine next month.

Lucescu, who was sacked by Zenit in May after the club missed out on Champions League qualification, will now be charged with leading Turkey to next year's World Cup in Russia.

All hope is however not lost as Turkey are due to host both Croatia and Iceland in their four remaining qualifiers and will qualify if they get better of the two front-runners.

Lucescu’s predecessor, Terim left the job after he was involved in an altercation in a restaurant brawl which left about five men injured in the incident.
