Hosts of the 2016 Suwon Invitational Tournament, South Korea, defeated Nigeria U-23s 1-0 in the opening game on Thursday.
The only goal of the game was scored by Choi Kyubaek towards the end of the match.
Taiwo Awoniyi had Nigeria’s first opportunity in the 20th minute but his shot went inches wide.
Ten minutes later Nigeria goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel made a brilliant save to keep the game at 0-0.
In the 36th minute, Awoniyi missed from close range after fine inter-play with Godwin Saviour.
Nigeria made their first change in the 37th minute, with Ubong Ekpai coming off for Nathan Oduwa.
In the 55th minute, Erhun Obanor almost gave Nigeria the lead but his effort off a corner came off the crossbar.
The hosts were close to taking the lead in the 62nd minute but Daniel made a vital save.
Five minutes later, Nigeria made two quick changes, with the duo of Stanley Dimgba and Godwin Saviour going off for Ndifreke Effiong and Julius Emiloju.
In the 10th minute, Usman and Tiongoli combined to miss a glorious opportunity with the net wide open and South Korea’s keeper beaten.
And with four minutes remaining, South Korea finally took the lead through Choi Kyubaek.
The U-23 Eagles made attempts to salvage a point but South Korea held on to their lead to claim the win.
