Arsenal on Tuesday night at the Emirates stadium in London revived their fading Champions League hopes with a 2-0 defeat handed to German champions and hot favourites Bayern Munich.
On the same night Chelsea continued their struggles with a 0-0 draw at Dynamo Kyiv.
Thr result left the Blues in third place in their group, and boss Jose Mourinho lashed out at the officials.
“The referee was weak and naive with the penalty,” Mourinho told the media, referring to Chelsea’s penalty claim when Cesc Fabregas went down in the box.
“I cannot understand what the referee behind the goal does because he doesn’t make a clear decision too. I see progress. We hit the post twice, had a good solid defensive performance against dangerous team. To lose this game would have been bad for us.”
Second-half goals from Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil in the 77th and 90th minutes saw the Gunners claim the points and now have three points in the table after three games.
Giroud came off the bench and scored from a Santi Cazorla freekick though replays suggest he bundled the ball home with his hands.
Ozil ensured victory when he shot from close range after Hector Bellerin’s cross found him. The assistant referee on the byline signalled that the ball indeed crossed the line despite Manuer Nuer’s effort to keep the ball away.
