Nigerian stars John Ogu and Anthony Nwakaeme were in action for Hapoel Be’er Sheva who beat Celtic 2-0 in the second leg play-offs of this season’s UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, but crashed out 5-4 on aggregate.
Efe Ambrose did not make the Celtic squad that travelled to Israel for the reverse fixture.
Both Ogu and Nwakaeme featured for 90 minutes for Hapoel Be’er Sheva as they won 2-0 on the night.
Hapoel Beer Sheva were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute but Mahadan Radi missed.
Five minutes later, Ben Sahar opened the scoring for the Israeli champions before Ovidiu Hoban doubled the lead on 48 minutes.
But Celtic held on in the remaining minutes to advance into the group stage of the Champions League.
In France, Elderson Echiejile did not feature in Monaco’s 1-0 home win against Villareal. The French club went through 3-1 on aggregate.
The only goal was scored by Fabinho in the 90th minute from the penalty spot.
And in Italy, FC Porto, without young Nigerian defender, Chidoziem Awaziem, thrashed nine-man Roma 3-0 to progress 4-1 on aggregate.
Goals from Felipe, Miguel Layun and Jesus Corona sealed the win for Porto.
