Former Wimbledon of England striker John Fashanu believes Barcelona star and four-time World Player of the Year winner, Lionel Messi, will emerge winner of the 2015 UEFA Player of the Year Award.
The Argentina forward is nominated for the prize alongside Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez, Messi’s team-mate at Barcelona.
Fashanu who was an English FA Cup winner in 1988 explains to Completesportsnigeria.com why Messi is primed to win the award.
“Messi’s goal scoring record in the year and his leadership qualities are reasons why he should win the prize,” Fashanu told completesportsnigeria.com.
“Other players did well too, especially the players from Juventus but individually, Messi is above the rest.”
However former Super Eagles striker Jonathan Akpoborie disagrees with Fashanu.
“Everybody seems to believe that Lionel Messi will win the award because its Messi,” Akpoborie told completesportsnigeria.com.
“But I see Luis Suarez as the player who deserves to win the award. He only started playing for Barcelona on October 25 last year (2014) and has already scored lots of goals for his team.
“What would have happened, how many goals do you think Suarez would have scored if he was not under a FIFA ban. I think we should put that into consideration.”
The award will be presented to the winner on August 27.
