The Area Superintendent of the Apostolic Church, Ukana Ukuk Area Headquarters, Ikot Ekpene, Pastor G Umanah, has warned that any football team that lacks discipline, respect for constituted authority, rules and regulations and above all hope in the Almighty God cannot achieve the desire objective.
The clergyman made the submission during the thanksgiving service to celebrate Akwa United’s Aiteo Federation Cup success last season and and fourth place in Nigeria Professional Football League.
“For you to succeed, you need to be very disciplined and level headed, you must obey and play according to the rules and regulations of the sport and most importantly should have the fear God and hope in His limitless capabilities,” he said.
“I am so delighted to have heard the Chairman of the club ascribe the success of his team to God. I remember that before the start of the season, you came here and handed this team over to God and God promised you victory.
“All of you here are living witnesses to what God did for his name sake.
“We told you last year that it will not be easy. We said you will pass through a lot of trials and temptation but that at the end you will triumph and it has come to pass. With the wisdom that you have to come back and thank God, and rededicate the club to Him, I prophesy
that you will do exploits this year. Go and conquer.”
The state commissioner for sports Monday Ebong Uko gave thanks to God for a season that had a lot of positives since the club was formed 20 years ago.
He recounted instances in the season that the club encountered challenges yet God triumphed even at a time that they had lost hope, particularly during the Aiteo Cup final when it seemed as if all was lost, only for the club to gain the upper hand and pick a continental ticket.
For the current season, he enjoined all the supporters of the club to
close ranks and work in unity towards the success of the club.
“It will be wrong for you to say that perhaps because you do not like the face of the commissioner or that of the chairman, you should then wish the club bad. This club is an institution, a unity vehicle and as far as Akwa Ibom state is concerned so we should come together to make sure it succeeds,” he pleaded.
Chairman of the Club Elder Paul Bassey also thanked God, the governor of the state, the state sports commissioner, the media, supporters club and all the fans who stood by them in the season.
“We will be ingrates if we do not actualise this thanksgiving aimed at the club giving all glory to God for the success of the team in the Aiteo Federation Cup and coming fourth in the league.
“Governor Udom Emmanuel, sports governor of the year 2017 stood by us and made sure we did not lack anything,” Bassey stated.
